THE LAST PATRIOT by Brad Thor could be classified as historical fiction. Former Navy SEAL and special ops Secret Service agent to the President, Scot Harvath, left his dangerous 15-year special ops life along with his ex-Navy girlfriend, Tracy Hastings. Tracy is in the process of recovering from serious wounds received from an exploding IED in Afghanistan where she had been an explosive demolition technician. Scot and Tracy are vacationing in Paris. While walking near a sidewalk café discussing their future and their new quiet life they witness a major terrorist attack. Scot, out of habit rushes to rescue an injured Anthony Nichols, a history professor at the University of Virginia who was thought by Harvath to be the subject of the attack. Scot does not want to get involved, he is happy with his new life, but Tracy convinces him of their responsibilities when they discover Nichols might have some sort of connection to the President. They soon learn that Professor Nichols is involved in researching the seventh century version of the Koran where it is thought that the Prophet Mohammed enlightened his disciples with the “lost revelation” a very different version of the Koran than exists today and one that could threaten the Muslim world as it exists today. In discussions with Nichols, Harvath is convinced that he has to find the Don Quixote. He learns that it might be in a rundown Mosque in a very dangerous section of Paris. In addition to the enjoyment of a well written novel, Brad Thor has provided us with an enlightened history of the Koran through almost 1400 years of Muslim ideology following the poisoning and death of Mohammed in 632 AD. Thor writes that in 1805, President Jefferson sent Army officer William Eaton with a contingent of Marines, Leathnecks, under Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon to attack Tripoli and put an end to Muslim pirating on the high seas—America’s very first military confrontation on foreign soil. Did Thomas Jefferson envision at that time a future threat to our nation from the Muslim world? I wonder. Through the written word, Brad Thor guides us through a fleeting history of events that bring us to the defense of our nation today. I believe this is Brad Thor’s finest novel. I heartedly recommend, The Last Patriot. I rate the book a strong 5-star success.

I'm hooked! That's all I can say about Scot Harvath and his adventures. I read a lot...but my escape reading is Brad Thor. I love how much research Thor does to makes his characters...and their situations, locations, tools, weapons...truly authentic. I've missed the good television dramas like "24" because I missed the first few seasons and have no time to "catch up." But with Brad Thor, I've been able to have my line up of books on my Kindle so I just flow from one to the next. Love it! Keep it coming, Brad!!

Brad Thor continues to educate on relevant subjects while creating his fast action style of fiction. Book 7 continues his string of well thought out story lines and fictional characters to support his themes.

This was the first of Thor's books I have read. This isn't usually a genre I read. But I heard some of the controversy concerning this book and Thor and wanted to read for myself.I enjoyed it. To me, it was about 50% political discourse (I know some will say diatribe but I happen to agree with most of it so I will say discourse) and 50% adventure tale. There was a lot of food for thought on Thor's views of the Islam world, Islamophobia, and Islam influence in the U.S. and around the world.I enjoyed the adventure tale also, with the asides about Thomas Jefferson, Cervantes, Barbary pirates, Tripoli, and Al-Jazari and his "Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices."Character development wasn't too deep, women in the story are really one-dimensional but these are both reasons I don't usually read this genre of book. Not unusual and a lot of people seem to like the books just this way.I have bought Thor's newest book Full Black (Scott Harvath) so I will find out how it compares. Oh and I want a Caucasian Ovcharka dog.

Brad Thor's book The Last Patriot has the essentials for a great novel, then goes beyond. It has attitude, crisp, explicit, to the point. His political incorrectness is wonderfully refreshing. I had read that Thor continually has threats on his life. After reading the book, I understand why. It takes a certain amount of intestinal fortitude to write like he does.Thor's characters are believable. A good-looking guy, a beautiful woman, likeable, not cliche. Enough small flaws to make them real. With my military and law enforcement background, I find the firearms choices and performance in many other books to be unreal or impossible. Thor gets it right -- well, maybe a little stretch, but believable. The drama and suspense coupled with the twists in the plot keep me turning pages. Well, actually swiping my Kinkle screen for the next page.Since I read this, I've bought two other Thor books and will probably end up with them all.

Previously only available in an expensive deluxe three volume set (and an incomplete paperback series), the Jules de Grandin series will be in five volumes from Night Shade Books. This volume reprints all the stories that were in Weird Tales from 1926 to 1928, starting with the first story, "The Horror on the Links."This is a handsome volume, well done. The tales of the supernatural Sherlock Holmes, as he was called, are pretty good, and ran right up until almost the end of the magazine, in the early 1950s. De Grandin fought everything from vampires, ghosts and demons to mummies and killer cults. One odd credit on the copyright page is the claim that stories are by permission of “Weird Tales Limited,” but they are in fact public domain. The copyright was never renewed on most issues of Weird Tales, which folded in 1954. It also says “The Horror on the Links” is copyright Quinn’s estate. That may mean it’s the revised version from "The Phantom Fighter" collection of 1966, in which Quinn modernized the stories collected. Quinn died in 1969.A worth addition to any library of pulp fiction.

Seabury Quinn was a mortician who wrote in his spare time. As it happened, he was the most popular writer in the annals of "Weird Tales" His name on the cover could boost sales tremendously. His Mist popular creation were doctors turned detectives Towbridge and Jules de Grandin. Overwritten but entertaining, these stories were the "X-Files" of their day. Were-gorillas, disembodied spirits, exotic life forms, ancient curses, all these and more were fodder for Quinn whose writing abilities never quite matched his imagination. I took off a star because Quinn's wooden style has not aged well. There is a reason why he faded into obscurity while Robert E Howard, August Derlieth, and H. P. Lovecraft became MORE famous as time progressed. Once you learn the ins and outs of Quinn's quite idiosyncratic style, he becomes much more fun to read. Your milage may vary.

Doctor of the occult, the bizarre, and the outré…This beautiful book contains 22 stories of Dr. Jules de Grandin, published in Weird Tales Magazine from 1925-1928. It is volume one in a series that promises to reprint all of the tales Seabury Quinn wrote featuring the little blonde Frenchman with his vast knowledge and experience with the unknown.Jules de Grandin resides for the most part with his friend and biographer Dr. Samuel Trowbridge in Harrisonville, New Jersey. Dr. Trowbridge and Grandin travel widely, and some of their adventures occur in other countries.Across these 22 stories our heroic duo battles demons, ghosts, vampires, and such creatures. There is almost always a lovely woman who is in danger of losing both body and soul.Jules de Grandin, much like Sherlock Holmes has supreme faith in his own abilities and knowledge. He comes across as pompous and self-promoting. He has little use for those who cannot see what he sees. He is often short with Dr. Trowbridge to the point of insult, as Holmes was with Dr. Watson. In the end, he will always return to his friendship with Trowbridge and give an explanation of his thought process and how he succeeded in saving the day.In these first 22 stories, I give Best in Book to “The Gods of East and West.” The story I liked the least was “The Dead Hand.”Fans of Holmes, Carnacki the Ghost Finder, John the Balladeer, John Thunstone, etc should be able to enjoy these tales with much delight! I give the volume five stars plus!Quoth the Raven…

If you've read typical letters from H. P. Lovecraft discussing the contents of the latest issues of WEIRD TALES, you know his mentions of the short stories of Seabury Quinn are generally accompanied by deep groans. Quinn typically placed around 6 stories per year in the monthly WEIRD. The stories feature the adventures of a Hercule Poirot clone, Jules de Grandin, as related by a dimwitted physician sidekick. The introduction to the first volume of the projected 5-volume collection of these tales gives some good advice... let several weeks go by between stories. [My recommendation is to read another, unrelated book between stories.]De Grandin specializes in the occult, the weird, the supernatural and the fantastic. Coming up with a new supernatural menace roughly every two months for 25 years and over 90 stories meant, of course, a good deal of repeated plowing of the same furrows. Sometimes Quinn finds a nice twist, as in the very first published story, where the reader will assume from the beginning that a mad doctor has invented a serum that transforms a nice young man into a murderous gorilla whenever the moon is full. Wrong! If you want to get the full benefit of these attractively printed and bound volumes, you will need some patience and some tolerance, because we are definitely skirting the boundaries of the kingdom of Hack. And more than sometimes, crossing that border.

This book is a good introduction to Dr Jules Di Grandin, the occult detective created by Seabury Quinn in Weird Tales magazine in the 1920's. Quinn was a great author who knew how to tell a story and he was prolific as well turning out a lot of material for a long time. You will notice that there are similarities between Di Grandin and his chronicler, Dr Trowbridge, and Sherlock Holmes &Dr Watson. Don't let that put you off because the differences between them are just as many. The emphasis is on the supernatural and the dark arts and demons of the occult and Di Grandin's ability and knowledge to combat the menace. These are entertaining pulp stories that are written well above some of the dreck that filled pulps during the heyday of the 1930's and '40s.
