Review

Praise for Cubed:"... Excellent ... fresh and intellectually omnivorous ... Saval is a vigorous writer, and a thoughtful one. What puts him above the rank of most nonfiction authors, even some of the better ones, is that he doesn’t merely present information. He turns each new fact over in his mind, right in front of you, holding it to the light."—Dwight Garner, The New York Times"Cubed is...a pleasure to read: beautifully written and clearly organized. Since many Americans now, women as well as men, spend more than half their waking hours at work, it's also an important exploration."—Richard Sennett, The New York Times Book Review"Lush, funny, and unexpectedly fascinating ... [G]enius ... Cubed stands as one of those books readers can open to any page and find the kind of insight they’ll want to yank strangers out of their bus or subway seats and repeat ... [A] beautifully written, original, and essential masterpiece."—Jerry Stahl, Bookforum"There are a lot of books about work... but Cubed offers something different: an entertaining look at the history of the modern worker that the modern worker can actually learn from."—Rosecrans Baldwin, NPR"Impressive... Beautifully written... delightfully readable..." —Martin Filler, The New York Review of Books"Thorough and diligent...Saval works hard, and effectively, to demonstrate how the evolution of workspaces paralleled social shifts in the workforce that we’re still living out.... Saval is a tireless researcher, and he turns phrases with a flair that would get an Organization Man fired."—Jennifer Howard, The Washington Post Book World"... Cleverly pieced together...subtle and sophisticated."—Jill Lepore, The New Yorker"Nikil Saval's new book, Cubed: A Secret History of the Workplace, is a fascinating guide to the intellectual history of the American office. Part cultural history, part architectural analysis and part management theory—with some labor economics, gender studies and pop culture thrown in for good measure—the book is a smart look at the evolution of the place where we spend so much of our lives."—The Washington Post"In his first book, Saval sets out to chronicle the evolution of the American office from airless prison to what it is today, reflecting upon the transformation of the office worker from emasculated novelty to unremarkable figure of ubiquity. To accomplish this, he synthesizes an impressive number of books, films, articles, and first-person accounts relating to the daunting number of historical forces and ideologies that have shaped white-collar work: architecture, philosophy, labor disputes, class conflict, the women’s movement, and technological advances, just to name a few. Saval considers each of them, forming a cogent and compelling narrative that could very easily have been scattered or deathly dull. To keep things lively, Saval deploys deft analytical skills and a tone that’s frequently bemused, making difficult and important concepts palatable to the casual reader."—The Boston Globe"Over the past week, as I've been carrying around a copy of Nikil Saval's Cubed: A Secret History of the Workplace, I've gotten some quizzical looks. 'It's a history of the office,' I'd explain, whereupon a good number of people would respond, 'Well, that sounds boring.' It isn't. In fact, Cubed is anything but... Saval's book glides smoothly between his two primary subjects: the physical structure of offices and the social institutions of white-collar work over the past 150 years or so. Cubed encompasses everything from the rise of the skyscraper to the entrance of women in the workplace to the mid-20th-century angst over grey-flannel-suit conformity to the dorm-like 'fun' workplaces of Silicon Valley. His stance is skeptical, a welcome approach given that most writings on the contemporary workplace are rife with dubious claims to revolutionary innovation—office design or management gimmicks that bestselling authors indiscriminately pounce on like magpies seizing glittering bits of trash."—Salon.com"Five days a week I commute to a skyscraper in the main business district of a large city and sit at a desk within whispering distance of another desk. Whatever the word 'work' used to conjure, my version is now quite standard. About 40 million Americans make a living in some sort of cubicle. Are we happy about that? The likelihood that we are not is central to Nikil Saval's impressive debut, Cubed: A Secret History of the Workplace."—The New Republic"... Formidable ... Beautifully rendered ... Sections of the book shine—especially when it discusses gender in the workplace ... The elegance of his prose and the intensity of his moral commitment linger."—The Nation"... Cubed is so stimulating, so filled with terrific material and shrewd observations, that it’s a must-read for anyone pondering how America arrived at its current state of white-collar under-employment and economic insecurity."—The Daily Beast"...[A] sharp and absorbing history of the office."—The Economist"Saval's book... stands out as one of the best pop histories to come out in years, and on a topic that most of us (statistically speaking) can relate to."—Fast Company"[An] absorbing history of office life...It sits cheerily between the academic and the journalistic register...Saval's style is nicely spiked with colloquialism... [His] debunking temper serves him well."—The Guardian"... An entertaining read ... Saval's readings of pop culture representations of the office and its workers add a lively and ironic perspective."—Publishers Weekly"Ferociously lucid and witty."—Kirkus Reviews"A sprightly historical tour of the vexed, overplanned world of the modern workplace."—In These Times“Why did no one write this necessary book before now? Never mind: it wouldn’t have been as good. Cubed has that combination of inevitability and surprise that marks the best writing—and thinking.”—Benjamin Kunkel, author of Indecision “Required reading for anyone who works in an office, and for those fortunate enough to have escaped.”—Ed Park, author of Personal Days "Nikil Saval is a superstar! He does for offices what Foucault did for prisons and hospitals, transforming a seemingly static, purely functional, self-evident institution into a rich human story, full of good and bad intentions, chance, and historical forces. Reading Cubed is like watching an amazing magic trick where the very boringness of the office turns out to be what is the most interesting. I found myself wishing he would do waiting rooms next."—Elif Batuman, author of The Possessed

If you work in a cube, no doubt you'll find this history interesting. Each chapter focuses on a different time period or mndset in office spaces. Overall, I found it interesting, some chapters more than others. Much more research has been done lately on the effect of office spaces on different types of workers. This book should not serve as a manual to the office planner, merely a history. We certainly do not wish to repeat the mistakes of the past. Honestly I found it a bit depressing at times, revealing the nature of work, and the division between managers and workers (even in the knowledge economy), and how office space is used to indicate power, prestige, control and lack thereof.

This is one of those books that ended up getting a good bit of press because it was a novel way of looking at something that is an everyday thing. The way that white collar workers do their work didn’t just happen that way, but it was a result of deliberate choices – from the architecture of the buildings that the work is done in to the furniture that the workers sit on. I hadn’t thought too deeply about it, thinking that the way things are was just a bit like the way things were, only with computers. I was wrong, and Saval tracks the changes, focused on the United States from the industrial revolution on. The white-collar worker has not been devoid of the standardization and alienation that the blue-collar worker had and rebelled against. The white-collar worker just never saw their white-collar chains; instead, they looked up, hoping to move up the ladder (no matter how false that metaphor is or was). The potential for striving has, writ large, been the barrier to class to recognition of the white-collar worker for generations. The lack of upward mobility except for into the white-collar ranks is what led to unionism and workers improving their lots. The myth of upward mobility in white-collar terms is a form of social control that is not readily seen.Saval tracks this, and it makes me think if this has been a deliberate move. As production has been mechanized, there are fewer production workers and more support staff in ancillary roles to production. As more workers move out of production and the workforce is more and more professionalized, white-collar membership is the mass of workers. It is the cube that keeps them apart and alienated. Maybe it is a prison of sorts. Me?I’m not part of this at all.My office has a door.

Struggled to finish this bland and verbose book. Not for the faint of heart. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone who is on an academic search for antiquated workplace practices

Interesting read, but the author goes off on difficult to follow tangents from time to time. Saval's choice of words can be a bit obtuse. If I wasn't currently a college student accustomed to reading academic literature, I would have found this book unmanageable at times. Regardless, interesting content overall.

Cubed is really about people, their motivations, their successes and failures. It spends a lot of pages on why people, both men and women, wanted to become white-collar workers and how they coped with the office landscapes that organizations built for their employees. Read this book and you will never look fondly at any skyscraper of any vintage with admiration again, for in one way or another too many offices were, and too often still are, dehumanizing.Saval ranges widely. The author is well read on a large variety of subjects that are important to his overall discussion. He

Heard an interview of Nikil Saval on 7th Avenue Project and knew I HAD to check this book out—I was NOT disappointed. It's a fascinating accounting on the evolution of the office, its design, and the varied influences (social, economic, etc.) that cross-pollinated to get where we are today. Excellent treatment, especially on design elements and open-concept (open-source) workspace. Kudos!

A good history of a subject that I would not have originally thought would be so interesting. It is more than just about the office cubicle. It is about the history of office work, city architecture, labor relations, changing business structure and much more. If like me you have spent much of your working career in an office cubicle, you will find much to relate to.

Nikil provides a wonderful narrative examining management philosophy, architecture and design, and culture over time. As a business school professor I appreciated learning more about how important the physical environment of the office is to the organizational culture that emerges, and visa versa.

My office furniture salesman son had this on his Christmas wish list. It's very interesting!

This is the first time I read a book by this author and I really enjoyed it. There was a little drama, a little suspense but a lot of love. The love that the men had for their women is what most women want and need. Love like Christ loved the church. It was hard to see how a woman could actually stand by her man, as Shaylah did, only to see her man run off into the sunset and live happily ever after with his mistress. It would have been justifiable if his marriage went through something for leaving the woman who truly loved him. I hope to see her find her Boaz and make him realize the prize he left. I look forward to reading other books by Ms. Woods.

Dawn and Autumn were raised by there mother when dad was busy being occupied by substance abuse. Obviously this affected there growing up and becoming women and the roads they took in life. Their dad turned his life around by the grace of God and moved on from the for benefits only relationship with there mother. There mother couldn't accept that and tried her best to ruin his new life. The effects of growing up shows up in there romantic relationships and how to commemorate a new baby sister, step-mother and budding romances. Dawn the younger of the two twins is in love with her college basketball sweetheart who her sister feels is physically and mentally abusing her. Autumn who loves her mother dearly and is having a hard time loving her dad's new role chose to get into a relationship with a man from old money and a large white family. Trying to inter-relate all of this into her new family and control her sister is a story of high drama. Great story line, fast pace and plenty of suspense. Great follow-up in this triology of love and redemption.

Author Genevieve Woods has done it again. I have read the series and like the first two books I couldn't put Dawn and Autumn down. There are serious topics tackled in this book from medical crisises, domestic violence, insecurities and issues from the past affecting the present and the future. I love how the author uses scripture references that not only relevant for her characters but to our lives as well. Her characters are relatable not over the top. They are real people who deal with real issues, ones that we don't always want to talk openly about. I feel bad for Autumn because it seems like she can't let go of the past and it may destroy her future. And her mother Shayla takes a women scorned to next level. I hope Camille and Karen can resolve their issues. And last but not least I hope Dawn and Wilson can overcome everything they are dealing with with. Author Woods please don't take too long with the next book. In addition to buying the book for my collection, I received and ARC for my honest review.

FANTASTIC READ! This book was filled with intense drama and unpredictable twists and turns. When I expected things to go left...they went right but I LOVED it. Dawn & Autumn were something else but what I enjoyed most was their strength of character. Autumn was not hearing or having what Wilson was handing out. Yet, she still had to check herself in how she handled certain situations because Dawn wasn't about to let Autumn run her life. Forgiveness is a strong theme in this book not so sure at that age I would have been so forgiving and the parts dealing with Lupus hit very close to home. I can't emphasize enough how much I enjoyed reading Dawn & Autumn's story and can't wait to find out how everything is going to play out!

I found this author as I was perusing through Kindle looking for a book to get me through hurricane Irma. I purchased the first book in this series, but decided not to purchase the next one because I wasn't sure how it would be. Surprisingly, after the power went out, I found myself engrossed in the character's lives and drama. Unfortunately, I finished before the power came back on and immediately regretted not buying the next book ðŸ˜Å¾. Needless to say, I'm enjoying this roller coaster ride. Book #4 is already in my queue. Great job!

Gripping, compassionate, and thought provoking are words that describe this book. The author tackled serious themes - domestic violence, forgiveness, and love. The story was intense but I absolutely loved it.I was nervous about Dawn's relationship with Wilson. Thankfully, their love for each other enabled them to overcome. I loved that Wilson sought help for his “situation”.Shayla!!! No words. I’ll leave it at that. Truthfully, I felt like praying for her.I loved that the author took imperfect people and used their stories to point us to the Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks, Genevieve! Highly recommend!

I'm an ARC reader but I would and did purchase this book, kindle and hard copy. The twins, Dawn & Autumn, were so relatable, and I most liked how Autumn could see the faults of others but not herself. That's so true for us today. We talk about what she did, what he doing but fail to realize or acknowledge we were or are guilty of the same thing. Another valuable lesson she showed us is that if we're not prayerful, the same struggles that bind our parents can be present in our lives. But if we trust God, he can and will lead us into our purpose and not someone else's will for our lives. Many times we try to do what others want us to do instead of trusting God to direct our paths and give us the desires of our heart. Wilson knew what he wanted, recognized his short comings and sought help. If we surrender to Jesus, those habits we couldn't break, the thoughts we can not remove from our minds, He will make us more than conquerors. Keep writing and blessing us Genevieve!

Mrs. Woods did an excellent job with this. I didn't know if it was ok to read the series out if order but I did. Boy was I surprised what this book brought to the table. In Dawn and Autumn some relevant issues we're tackled head on in this book. It was an eye opener in the sense that we sometimes cover things up without first dealing with the root cause of why we do some things.I hope the sisters can renew their twin bond . I hope that Wilson's recent commitment to the Lord won't be hindered but unseen things.I loved the music plugins.

This set of short stories was a really nice mesh of stories I may not have even known I wanted. I'm familiar with this Old World (and you should be, too, if you're reading this one), but this gave some "behind the scenes" looks at some stories that either we saw from another side or beyond where the story ended. While I've already read "Malediction" and "Sell-By Date" but the rest were so... fun. Even a story that I really thought I wouldn't enjoy - Scarlett giving birth - was silly and fun enough that I completely enjoyed it. If you are looking for a unique blend of stories that helps round out the sets of series, this is definitely worth it. You even get some bonus material at the end, if you're interested in other works by the author.

This is a must have for Olson fans! Sachi has to finally come clean about her secret. Correy is learning how to take care of baby vampires and balance collage life. Lex has an intersting adventure with her aunt. And a little something for big keep fans. Satisfying collection of short stories. I look foward to this authors next book release.

Melissa Olson is the best!!!! Melissa listens to her readers and she delivers. This book should not be your first Melissa Olson book, Melissa uses Companion Pieces to fill in the blanks for some of her best books. Companion Pieces went so far beyond my expectations I wish I could give it more stars. If you want to read amazing series with plot twist that always leave you wanting more, please read Melissa Olsons books. Companion Pieces is just the icing on the cake for a great author.

Thank you Melissa for these chapters that fill in the gaps on what happened next to my favorite characters. I was happy to hear what happened to Will. Good to know about Scarlett and Jesse. I don’t want to give things away but having read all of your books, this was a great epilogue.

This read fills in the blanks nicely on the Boundary Witch series, which were all great, and it introduced me to Scarlett Bernard, so now I'm reading that series as well. Melissa Olson is a talented writer with plenty of direction to go in the "Old World" universe. I look forward to more.

Melissa provides some pre and post story stories that I thoroughly enjoyed reading…and had to read once I started one of the stories. While not a must read, it does fill in some blanks and puts the “flesh” on some of the storylines. Great reading.

This was a great read filling in the details on some of Melissa’s great stories. It makes me want more stories about Lex and Scarlet- soon please. And, I hope that someday I can read more about Lena- one of my favorite characters.

Scarlett has her baby! Some stories are old and some are new. A must buy if you're an old world fan. And did I mention, Scarlett has her baby?I enjoyed all the stories and you can guess which was my favorite.

The pictures in the book are very detailed. The print is large enough to read easily without taking away from the pictures.

This is such a weird story! The book is well illustrated and laid out. The font is easy to read, etc. But the story is bonkers. There's supposed to be a lesson about being gentle and not rough, but the narrative is bizarre, about missing butterflies, attacking moths and the story jumps around a ton in the interest of brevity. I do not like this story at all. Two stars though because my son likes anything PJ masks and seems interested.

I bought four of these books and they're based off of PJ Masks episodes. Unfortunately, these books have a LOT of words for bedtime stories! They take FOREVER to read through and my son would rather make up his own stories than listen to the entire (boring) book.

My daughter is obsessed with PJ Masks, and I wanted to get her something nice on a budget. She has several books and already proclaims running around this house, repeatedly wanting to read it over, that this is her favorite book.I was surprised too that the story comes with a lesson of being kind and not aggressive, great teaching lesson for a toddler. For a couple bucks, this was a awesome deal.

Great little book. My son insists on having this and his other favorite pj mask book in his bed every night. The cover has gotten a bit bent, but there are no tears or permanent damage to the pages or binding. Cute book and story, sturdy design.

Grandkids love these PJ Mask books.

My daughter is crazy for PJ Masks and always asks me to read this book to her! Love it.

Great starter books for new readers!

The organization of the book is great, but I wish it had a better index and glossary. Finding specific sections can get tiresome. It's definitely a lot clearer than the Harvard Blue Book (in my opinion).

I received the 5th Edition of this book as opposed to the 6th, which is the one featured in the photo.

From the Back Cover

THE RIVETING TALE OF A TRUE-LIFE CRIME-FIGHTING SCIENTIFIC SLEUTHWhen a skeleton is all that's left to tell the story of a crime, Mary Manhein, otherwise known as "the bone lady", is called in. For almost two decades, Manhein has used her expertise in forensic anthropology to help law enforcement agents -- locally, nationally, and internationally -- solve their most perplexing mysteries. In this eerie book she shares the extraordinary details of the often high-profile cases on which she works, and the science underlying her analyses. Here are the fascinating details of how, from a pile of bones, she assesses age, sex, race, signs of trauma, and time of death, and how she can even use clay to re-create a face.Written with the compassion and humor of a born storyteller, The Bone Lady is an unforgettable glimpse into the lab where one scientist works to reveal the human stories behind the remains.

#273,548 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I was looking forward to reading this book, especially what a forensic anthropologist does and how it assisted in solving identification. However, I was somewhat disappointed as the author's book was a cursory overview of her life and did not go into great detail how she got into this career path, more examples of what she actually does, how her work is done, etc.

"The Bone Lady - (Life as a Forensic Anthropologist)" by Mary H. Manhein, ISBN 01402.9192X (pbk), Penguin Books 2000, is a 137 page curiously enticing story-telling recount of Manhein's personal encounter and infatuation with college anthropology which led her to become a working forensic bioanthropologist and Director of Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services Laboratory (FACES), forensics instructor (LSU), and deputy coroner.A gifted story teller, she provides an articulate recital of her childhood, then marriage, and finally 'matriculating' at age 33; and she then delves into a dozen or so intriguing cases where she is asked to help provide identification of remains, often just bones and thus she acquires rank as 'The Bone Lady,' and later fellowhip distinction (FAAFS). The medley of cases provide some modicum about similariy of mammalian bones, grave sites, viewing windows in cast-iron coffins, insights into aging of bone, and differentiation of male vs. female remains. The book yields the "feeling" of field forensics by touching on the politics, stenches, miseries, hazards, grief, closure, and those too few triumphs unearthed by 'The Bone Lady." It is well written and easy to read and priced just right.

Let me start this review by informing the you that I am an Anthropology student, so I am slightly biased towards the subject of the text. In a way this is good for the book and in a way it isn't. It is good, because no matter the negatives of the author or text I am going to like it since I love reading about the cases and how the investigator got to the conclusion they reached. Unfortunately I am also more knowledgeable on the topic then the average joe. With that being said...After reading Ms. Manhein's book I am very disappointed, upon purchasing the text I was looking forward to learning something new that only someone in the field could teach me, but after the first few chapters, I found her writing simplistic and her chapters short. I do not know if the author was attempting to dumb down her writing for the masses or if she just didn't have much to write. But her book leaves much to be desired. For someone who is a novice in the field, an avid Bones watcher who just finds this fascinating and needs to have things like "skull" and "cranium" defined individually then this is perfect for them. She tends to blend her stories with the science seamlessly and while I there may have not been enough science for my tastes I cannot deny that that makes the book an easy read.If you are looking for a little to no-fluff book that describes the situation and science with little conjecture, this is not for you. I would suggest another text titled, Dead Men Do Tell Tales by Dr. Maples.

I'm one of the fortunate folks that has had a chance to work with Mary over the years. Anyone remotely interested in how forensic anthropology assists law enforcement and the loved ones of a "lost" person will love this book. The work that Mary and others have done with the LSU F.A.C.E.S lab is nothing short of amazing. Buy the book, read it, and share it with others.

I got hooked on forensic anthropology when I read "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" when I was 13 and I bought this book as a recomendation by Amazon. It was a good book, written about Mary Manhein's personal experiance in the field, but lacking technical perspective. I enjoyed the book as a look from a Anthropologist's perspective, but I was disapointed by the way the book presented the field, as if only written more as a short record of cases rather than an informative record. It wasnt very well written and rather dry reading. Over all I wouldnt recomend this because there are way to many good books out there that contain informative material that is well written. Dont get me wrong, I did like the book, to a degree, but I love to read and it was a short book that didnt take long to finish, so I am not regreting the perchase, but it is not the ideal book for someone that has not read anything else from the field... it may sour you from buying another book on the topic. I would start with "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" and then read this if you're still interested...

I enjoyed reading her book for facts, but also for hearing her voice. I was blessed to get to meet her in person and truly loved how life comes alive around her. She works with death as she helps find completion for those who have lost a loved one. She helps police discover the truth on how who died and how they lost their life. Ms. Manhein also writes fiction. The third book in the non fiction series, just released. Check out all of her books. You won't be disappointed.

The subject is fascinating and the writing is fine. My issue with this book is that all of the stories are too short to really engage. Just as one begins to get interested, the story ends. Also, a lot of the stories don't have much content (hence, the shortness), and some don't have a resolution. The diagrams, also, could have been better and better labeled; for example, in comparing a male and female pelvis, it would be helpful if the parts mentioned in the caption were labelled on the drawing. Great subject, not great execution.

My only complaint about the Bone Lady is that it was way too short. I think Ms. Manhein could have given us more information and more cases than she did. I know I certainly could have read a lot more. Again, here is a scientist who luckily doesn't write like a scientist...meaning dry, big words, and boring. This author knows how to explain with humor a topic which really is a difficult topic to deal with. Reading her book made me wish sometimes I hadn't decided to go into neuroscience and science education for the Deaf! Karen L. Sadler, Science education, University of Pittsburgh, klsst23@pitt.edu
