Review

**STARRED REVIEW** "An awesome swimmer with a frustrating learning disability struggles in the roiling waters of adolescence . . . Readers will root for [Annabelle] as she ricochets between ebullience and despair, empathy and hurt, confidence and doubt, pride and self-loathing—we've been there, too, or soon will be. Captures the turmoil of adolescence with wisdom and humor in near-pointillist detail." (Kirkus Reviews)**STARRED REVIEW** "Morrison, a former teacher, realistically captures the challenges of middle school—complicated family dynamics, volatile friendships, and first love—in this story about a girl struggling to find where she belongs." (Publishers Weekly)"A sweet and entertaining novel that offers deeper themes to ponder." (School Library Journal)"Laurie Morrison authentically captures the lovelorn daydreams as well as the awkwardness and anxiety of a middle school girl with one foot in her childhood friendships and the other venturing into the world of young adulthood . . . the feelings and struggles Annabelle experiences are universal and will strike a chord with middle school students." (School Library Connection)"Readers will relate to Annabelle—if not with the specifics of her life, then with the feelings of an almost teen as she navigates growing up. The well-crafted characters extend to the adults in the story, who are multilayered and have lives beyond their relationship with their daughter. Best of all, Annabelle's realizations about her life are hard won and wholly believable." (Booklist)

It is a classic for a reason! I was hesitant to get this book at first. Now, I'm glad I got it! I know why a National Master recommend this book to me now.I'd recommend you have knowledge of strategy and basic tactics before going through this book. It's one of those books you'll continue to go back through as you become a stronger chess player.

The best book on attacking in chess. You should probably be 1200+ to read it and up to 2000;but then it can be read over and over, as you'll learn something every time.

I acquired this book when I was ready to take my chess skills to the next level. I was a Class D player (1300s) at the time, and am now a Class C player hoping to break into Class B. The book presents a plethora of scenarios which are fun and challenging. It explains the moves and traps very well. I spent many weekends setting up the hypos on my chess board, and enjoyed every single trap, failure and explanation. Thanks to this book, my chess moves are much more refined than they used to be. Highly recommended.

Solid chess book for developing and using your attacking mindset -which essentially is chess. I would recommend this for uscf/fide1600+ players mainly for the appreciative reasons - at that level you know some tactics and have seen them worked and failed. This book combines positional chess and tactics into one - Attack. Very rich but not massive so obviously several passes may be required to retain the material.

I have recently reviewed a few other chess books here, and along with How To Re-Assess Your Chess, this is the only one of my five recent purchases that I enjoyed and benefitted from. It is one-sided, of course. If you want to know the best way to defend against this or that opening by white, you're outta luck. But it identifies several very useful patterns to watch for, whereby you can knock your opponent for a loop. I felt it improved my game, and was easy enough to understand, for a non-tournament player who probably plays to the 1200 level or so.

Excellent Thanks!

This book belongs in everyone's repertoire, along with Nimzovich's "My System", and Kmoch's "Pawn Power". I would have given it 4 stars if not for the numerous tactical errors, which are corrected in this new edition at the bottom of the respective pages by the editor. It would have been better if the original prose had simply been altered and overwritten with the corrected analysis.

This book is a super-classic, though no exercises to test, this does not matter,as this is not just a book of puzzles and so no need to give exercises for you to solve. In fact it is a bible of attack. After reading this book, your attacking power would be much, much improved and when solving those puzzles by John Nunn, Gallagher, combination motifs, manual of combinatioin etc, those previous difficult puzzels you cannot solve, may now be seem to be easy to you!!! Just look the the numerous reprints, so can have an idea how great this book is!!!! Now with the book in Algaebraic system, then there is no excuse not to buy it!!!!!!

Review

“Anyone can grasp Mr. Kurzweil’s main idea: that mankind’s technological knowledge has been snowballing, with dizzying prospects for the future. The basics are clearly expressed. But for those more knowledgeable and inquisitive, the author argues his case in fascinating detail . . . . The Singularity Is Near is startling in scope and bravado.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times“Filled with imaginative, scientifically grounded speculation . . . . The Singularity Is Near is worth reading just for its wealth of information, all lucidly presented . . . . [It’s] an important book. Not everything that Kurzweil predicts may come to pass, but a lot of it will, and even if you don’t agree with everything he says, it’s all worth paying attention to.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer“[An] exhilarating and terrifyingly deep look at where we are headed as a species . . . . Mr. Kurzweil is a brilliant scientist and futurist, and he makes a compelling and, indeed, a very moving case for his view of the future.”—The New York Sun“Compelling.”—San Jose Mercury News“Kurzweil links a projected ascendance of artificial intelligence to the future of the evolutionary process itself. The result is both frightening and enlightening . . . . The Singularity Is Near is a kind of encyclopedic map of what Bill Gates once called ‘the road ahead.’”—The Oregonian“A clear-eyed, sharply-focused vision of the not-so-distant future.”—The Baltimore Sun“This book offers three things that will make it a seminal document. 1) It brokers a new idea, not widely known, 2) The idea is about as big as you can get: the Singularity—all the change in the last million years will be superceded by the change in the next five minutes, and 3) It is an idea that demands informed response. The book’s claims are so footnoted, documented, graphed, argued, and plausible in small detail, that it requires the equal in response. Yet its claims are so outrageous that if true, it would mean . . . well . . . the end of the world as we know it, and the beginning of utopia. Ray Kurzweil has taken all the strands of the Singularity meme circulating in the last decades and has united them into a single tome which he has nailed on our front door. I suspect this will be one of the most cited books of the decade. Like Paul Ehrlich’s upsetting 1972 book Population Bomb, fan or foe, it’s the wave at epicenter you have to start with.”—Kevin Kelly, founder of Wired“Really, really out there. Delightfully so.”—Businessweek.com“Stunning, utopian vision of the near future when machine intelligence outpaces the biological brain and what things may look like when that happens . . . . Approachable and engaging.”—the unofficial Microsoft blog“One of the most important thinkers of our time, Kurzweil has followed up his earlier works . . . with a work of startling breadth and audacious scope.”—newmediamusings.com“An attractive picture of a plausible future.”—Kirkus Reviews“Kurzweil is a true scientist—a large-minded one at that . . . . What’s arresting isn’t the degree to which Kurzweil’s heady and bracing vision fails to convince—given the scope of his projections, that’s inevitable—but the degree to which it seems downright plausible.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“[T]hroughout this tour de force of boundless technological optimism, one is impressed by the author’s adamantine intellectual integrity . . . . If you are at all interested in the evolution of technology in this century and its consequences for the humans who are creating it, this is certainly a book you should read.”—John Walker, inventor of Autodesk, in Fourmilab Change Log“Ray Kurzweil is the best person I know at predicting the future of artificial intelligence. His intriguing new book envisions a future in which information technologies have advanced so far and fast that they enable humanity to transcend its biological limitations—transforming our lives in ways we can’t yet imagine.”—Bill Gates“If you have ever wondered about the nature and impact of the next profound discontinuities that will fundamentally change the way we live, work, and perceive our world, read this book. Kurzweil’s Singularity is a tour de force, imagining the unimaginable and eloquently exploring the coming disruptive events that will alter our fundamental perspectives as significantly as did electricity and the computer.”—Dean Kamen, recipient of the National Medal of Technology, physicist, and inventor of the first wearable insulin pump, the HomeChoice portable dialysis machine, the IBOT Mobility System, and the Segway Human Transporter“One of our leading AI practitioners, Ray Kurzweil, has once again created a ‘must read’ book for anyone interested in the future of science, the social impact of technology, and indeed the future of our species. His thought-provoking book envisages a future in which we transcend our biological limitations, while making a compelling case that a human civilization with superhuman capabilities is closer at hand than most people realize.”—Raj Reddy, founding director of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and recipient of the Turing Award from the Association for Computing Machinery“Ray’s optimistic book well merits both reading and thoughtful response. For those like myself whose views differ from Ray’s on the balance of promise and peril, The Singularity Is Near is a clear call for a continuing dialogue to address the greater concerns arising from these accelerating possibilities.”—Bill Joy, cofounder and former chief scientist, Sun Microsystems

#39,684 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I remember several years ago telling people I had just subjected myself to the scariest book of my life after reading one about the supposedly inevitable nuclear implosion of Pakistan. Well, now I've found something that tops it, even though author Ray Kurzweil seems to imagine his book as a bolt of optimism. Anyone who has ever played around with the arithmetic of compounding and exponential growth knows how crazy the numbers get as growth feeds on itself. The phenomenon is quite real in the world, and it describes everything from viral epidemics to Warren Buffet's fortune. Kurzweil applies the exponential growth paradigm to the future of technology. He sees not only change itself accelerating, but the rate of change too, if you can go back to your high school calculus and wrap your mind around that stomach-churning concept. The math starts quickly approaching infinity, which is why it's so weird. "Singularity" is a common term-of-art among theoretical physicists, who apply it to a variety of seemingly irrational constructs, such as an infinitely large mass compressed towards an infinitely small point. Kurzweil co-opts the term for his own purpose here to mean the point in time where artificial intelligence starts exceeding human intelligence. Thereafter, it takes over its own programming and, being so powerful, does a better and better job of it. Because things are already moving so fast today, the accelerating rate of change means that Kurzweil's Singularity is closer than even optimists might imagine - hence the book's title. He projects it to occur somewhere in the middle of this century. Afterwards, nothing will ever again be the same. In physics, unimaginable things start happening at singularity points, like energy explosions within black holes. Following Kurzweil's Singularity, the most garish science fiction fantasies start becoming commonplace. The combination of genetics, nanotechnology and robotics - which he refers to collectively as GNR - will transform all aspects of human existence. He believes, for example, that nanobots released into a person's bloodstream, will facilitate a comprehensive (that is to say, 100%) map of that person, including genetic code and nervous system, that can be uploaded and downloaded at will onto new "substrates". In other words, robotic copies of human beings - body, mind, memories, and (one presumes) soul - can be made that will appear indistinguishable from the originals. And for that matter, those originals themselves can be re-shaped at will, giving us all the opportunity to become brilliant, strong, happy, and beautiful. Kurzweil tells us that artificial circuits replicating themselves at a molecular level will merge with the biological circuits that constitute our nervous systems, giving rise an "enhanced" human super-intelligence. Once this starts happening, what we now call the Internet will in effect become telepathic, giving these enhanced humans instantaneous access to all available knowledge and information as they fashion their brave new world. You see how explosive this gets? And it's just the beginning. Once the process gets underway, the evolving super-intelligence keeps expanding until it permeates the entire planet and, still accelerating, eventually the universe. Kurzweil suggests that movement though time-space "wormholes" should one day facilitate rapid travel beyond our own galaxy, taking the process literally everywhere. I realize that my amateur's survey of Kurzweil's thinking here makes him sound like a crank. However, let there be no mistake: he is an accomplished scientist and a highly sophisticated thinker. MIT-trained, he's an expert in artificial intelligence and has put his ideas into practice as a successful tech entrepreneur. Most of this book is not even devoted to prognostications, but to an in-depth review of research currently underway that lays the practical groundwork for virtually everything he talks about (except maybe the wormhole business). While he makes numerous leaps of faith in taking us from here to there, none of his forecasts represent sheer fantasy. He is an extremely good writer, and while staying true to what is in fact pretty complex science, describes it all in a way that makes it reasonably clear to lay readers. For all his hardcore materialism, Kurzweil also has a whimsical streak. Every 50 pages or so, he breaks up his text with imaginary light-hearted debates among himself (appearing as "Ray"), various historical figures - Darwin, Freud, etc. - and a person named "Molly", who seems to be a student. Molly is bright, curious, skeptical, and not in the least bit awed by Ray or the others. The thing about Molly is that she appears in two separate guises: Molly 2004 (the year this book was being written), and Molly 2104, which is of course well beyond the Singularity. One of Kurzweil's key forecasts is that future science will learn how to arrest and even reverse the aging process, allowing people more-or-less to live forever at whatever age they choose. So Molly has made it through the Singularity and returned as a still-young woman to speak about it from experience. Kurzweil is fully aware of the potential downside to his vision. He devotes one long chapter to what he calls "The Deeply Intertwined Promise and Peril of GNR". He devotes another even longer chapter to responding to critics, who have attacked his ideas from every possible perspective. While he treats most criticisms respectfully, in the end he largely dismisses them all. One partial exception and the one specific fear he himself does seem to harbor is of self-replicating nanobots. He and other scientists who seriously debate such stuff even have a short-hand term for this specter: The Grey Goo Problem. Were self-replication somehow to spin out of control, Kurzweil explains to us that in a matter of days it could, in theory, consume the Earth's entire biomass and reduce it to "grey goo". This is indeed a troubling prospect, since this endangered biomass includes all of us. Interestingly, the cluster of criticisms that he responds to most gently are those arising from a spiritualist perspective. In one of his imaginary debates with "Molly", she repeatedly asks "Ray" if he believes in God. Ray surprises by dodging the question every time rather than saying no. Badgered into a corner, he finally avers: "For the sake of your question, we can consider God to be the universe, and I said that I believe in the universe." This sounds suspiciously like a yes, albeit with a twist. He then goes on to explain how his entire vision can be described as a picture of the universe "waking up" as enhanced human intelligence pervades its many corners. Religious people of an unorthodox bent might be tempted to embrace this image as God's self-realization. Fundamentalists of every stripe, however, were they to take K's cosmology seriously at all, would view it with disgust as the self-realization of God's Opposite Number. For me, the most unnerving question that this book triggers is who will control these accelerating technologies. Reading through many passages of the book, I found it hard not hard to be thinking about Nazi scientists beavering away at the design of their Master Race, or North Korean labs re-programming the neural patterns of citizens lacking enthusiasm for Kim Jong-Un. Kurzweil seems to trust in the pragmatic good will of the scientific community, buttressed by regulation. However, not all scientists have good will, and he says nothing about who he supposes will regulate the regulators. I also find it hard to see what joy or challenge there could be in a world where machines or enhanced humans dominate everything. People choosing not to become "enhanced" would either have it forced upon them or face life as a sub-species. The line between utopia and dystopia here is pretty fuzzy, and I find it a little scary that Kurzweil doesn't seem to care. Maybe I've seen too many science fiction movies. All that aside, I highly recommend this book. Decades ago when I was in college I used to describe about every other book I read as "changing my life", as we said in the day. Nowadays, no book changes my life, although the best ones still move the needle for me. Whether I like it or not, this one has me looking at things a little differently than I did before.

Any review of this book would have to start off by emphasizing that it written by Ray Kurzweil, one of the leading electrical engineers, scientists and tinkerers of the latter 20th century and early 21st century. Not surprisingly, he has an incredibly in-depth knowledge of technology, especially with respect to electrical engineering, that he brings to the table in his book. He really, really knows his stuff. That is what gives this book its “meat”. For many, especially those not interested in technical discussions, this book is not recommended. For those who are interested in such a discussion this is a book that is very much worth reading. He makes projections involving computer processing power, human – machine interfacing, energy production, etc. that are all very well worth hearing and that are all made very well. He makes the argument, well based on his in-depth knowledge, that this technology will mark a radical departure not just from the point of technology but in terms of human history and even with respect to what it will mean to be human. He believes that human physiology and technology will so interface that humans will become more cyborg than human and that immortality (at least in the de facto sense) will be reached. All of these views are all well worth listening to, especially for those with a deep interest and/or background in technology. The book does have a number of problems however that need to be pointed out. One is that his views on AI depend almost entirely on brain emulation and reverse engineering. He does not examine other ways AI may develop that do not parallel the human brain. A second problem is that he ignores the economic incentives that would drive human – machinery fusion. To him, the mere availability of the technology means it will be adopted. In this reviewer’s opinion the main driver will be economic competition a la zero sum game theory. In this reviewer’s opinion the real driver will be economic competition. If one’s competitor’s have chips that enable instant memory recall or interfacing with the internet (or a future version of it) one will not be able to compete. Like it or not, for one’s economic survival, one will have to follow the path of becoming a cyborg (or more like one).A third problem is that there is little discussion on how technology will influence human institutions. It may be the case that technology will so undermine these or prevent new ones from emerging in which humans can interact with each other without destroying each other or even functioning effectively with each other. A fourth major problem with his book is that he views the human – machinery fusion that he is predicting in very glowing positive terms. Other authors, such as George Zarkadakis in his “in our image” believe this symbiosis will be what will eventually lead to humanity’s extinction. Another important weakness of the book is its very glowing view of the benefits of human “immortality” or, at the very least a vastly increased lifespan. He seems to forget that the increased lifespan of humanity will also lead to much longer lived Stalin or Maos. Imagine a world where degenerates like these can reign not 20 or 30 years but 100 or 200.Last but not least the most important weakness of the book is the fact that it ignores the very important role that death plays in the evolution of human history through paradigm shifts. Changes in human institutions and popularity held beliefs (i.e., religions, nationalism, secularism, the scientific method, etc.) occur primarily because the young, eventually, replaces the old. A vastly increased human lifespan, never mind immortality, would go very far in undermining this. Alfred Adler put it very eloquently in the following quote: "Death is really a great blessing for humanity, without it there could be no real progress. People who lived for ever would not only hamper and discourage the young, but they would themselves lack sufficient stimulus to be creative".

The DefectorBy Daniel SilvaDisclaimer: This reviewer is a Silva fan for 2 decades. I have just finished a re-reading of the this book as part of a re-read of the Gabriel Allon Series from the beginning. For me, I now have a better and deeper understanding of the value one can get from reading a Silva book.It isn't the same the second time around. I feel differently about the story and the hero. I can not tell anyone how to write about a man in umpteen books and keep it not only enjoyable, interesting and a better use of one's time than anything the internet can provide, without wondering how does one write about the same man, doing essentially the same thing with essentially the same people in a completely unforgiving world and in an environment where treachery must always be assumed and, hopefully, avoided. This book is an example of how to overcome the insinuated barriers to superb writing. The answer is that Silva is extraordinarily passionate about his views of right and wrong, fair and not, and the varying nature of truth as it never just has one master to serve. Silva takes the news of the past and finds repetitions of that past news in today's headlines and tries to warn us all that we are doomed if we repeat the mistakes of our past. Perhaps not a new theme but a valuable one nonetheless. This book and a few others in this series are keen to remind us that we have no ally in the Kremlin, whoever 'we' are. Brutality and treachery, all to maintain the great divide between the haves and have nots in a country rich with everything the world needs or wants but cannot learn how to share for a fair return for all. The robber barons of the last century are still alive in Russia. The Soviet Union died because the robbers tired of supporting the outer republics so they abandoned them to a sort of gangster democracy. But to do that, the robbers needed to get to know everyone else's secrets and plans because competing fairly is not in their DNA.Ultimately, their egregious behavior ran afoul of our hero's sensitivities. The headline is the main message to this review. Silva's Allon is the hero. He is selfless but confident, and he loves his wives but just a hair less than his country and nothing is more important than his word. Silva admires his hero, though his hero's faults sometimes make us uncomfortable. But the essence of this hero is that he lives his life putting his views of right, wrong, love, and honor all ahead of his personal well-being or wealth or popularity. Can any of us say that we live the same way? Of course not. That is how Silva can keep us enthralled time after time.Read this book; for the first time or the second.Al Dell

The Defector, book 9 in the Gabriel Allon series, is really a direct continuation of book 8. If you are a series' follower, or new to the series, do yourself a favor and read books 8 then 9, even if you aren't already enjoying them in order. While many of his other books can stand alone, this one would be far too much of a teaser of books 1-8, and a disconnect without 8, to deny yourself the guilty pleasure of committing to at least the two book read. For those who have become Silva fans during books 1-8, this is a particularly intimate look at the fictitious team you've come to love and admire.

I admit that among the writers I read, Daniel Silva stands within an elite group. I'm not going to name names. That's not important. All that is, is once picked up, a Silva book becomes an addictive to read further into this most gifted writer."The Defector" is a very clever read. It is up there with LeCarre in story telling. I find that once started, I cannot put Silva's books down. That comment after having read five or so of his books. He is prolific and Gabriel Allon is his star as Tracy Crosswhite is Dugoni's, or Harry Bosch is Michael Connelly's. I could to on, but you get the idea. They are those characters that stand out in any read that leads us to want more from the writers.I'll be reading this writer, as with some others, not mentioned, for a while

The first half of this book has two essential purposes: recap the history of Gabriel Allon’s experience with Russian villain Ivan Kharkov and then set the stage for his eventual capture. Author Daniel Silva freely recalls the history of Kharkov from his earlier novel Moscow Rules. More than once I had the distinct impression that I’d read this material before. There is some new material, however, such as a description of how Gabriel had met, romanced and married his current wife, Chiara. Thankfully the second half is much more interesting and a pleasure to read. The quest to bring Kharkov to justice is ramped up once again and the story is more relevant. Chiara is now part of the Israeli team. They work hard and suffer immensely to accomplish their mission. Kharkov’s wife Elena and his two children are still free of Ivan’s tentacles but are useful as bait to get him out of hiding and in a position to be captured. But probably the worst of Ivan’s fears comes true as he reads a message from his children, something that a father never wants to hear. Overall I thought this sequel was much less effective than Moscow Rules. Perhaps Silva should have heeded the first of those Moscow rules: Never look back.

Daniel Silva is one of my favorite authors, and I just love his character, Gabriel Allon. The Defector shows how Silva has grown as an writer. This book shows more development of characters and a completely different direction for Gabriel. This is not exactly like his previous books, but it is similar. I love the twists and turns throughout the story. I won't give a summary, as other reviewers have done that. I'll just say this was one of Silva's best.

Even though Daniel Silva claims that this book is mostly a figment of his imagination, one can imagine that so much of what he portrays would be possible in Russia today. I fear I will be sad when I finish the last Gabriel Allon book!

I am hardly impartial. I love Silva's books and have read every one. He writes very well and I always learn something from each book. This may not be his best, but it is worth reading and he ties up all loose ends beautifully. I am a Gabriel Allon fan and I think he is my favorite literary hero in the mystery/intrigue genre. If you have never read an Allon novel, start with an earlier one. The characters become like family and I would prefer you meet them sooner than in this book.

Yet another triumph for Daniel Silva in the Gabriel Allon Series. Heart pounding thriller ride in pursuit of the villains. Characters that feel like family. The premise that good triumphs over evil.

Beautiful version. His voice is epic and awesome!! He speaks perfectly...nice and quiet.....not too fast or too slow...just perfect. I am a Type A, and if I think it is perfect, that is amazing. Some other ones I heard over the years were way too slow, so you wanted them to get going. My other family members also think it is perfect. Love his voice. Well worth it to get this!! SUPERB

Love James Earl Jones, but the quality of the recording is subpar. The edits are often way louder than the other 90% of the recording. So you're sitting there enjoying calming JEJ reading...calm voice...calm voice...soothing voice...then BOOM LOUD JAMES EARL JONES FOR 3 WORDS...then back to calm voice...calm voice...and so on. That's my only complaint and it shouldn't stop you from ordering this. It's worth the money.

Jones has a resonant voice, but the continual background music, which influences as well as distracts the listener, annoyed me. I asked for a credit since I have never listened but to a few minutes of this unfortunate production. They do not do that.

Love listening to "James Earl Jones Reads the Bible". It's hard sometimes for me to focus on reading such readings as the Bible. So much easier to have it read to you and James Earl Jones does a wonderful job doing just that. Love his voice which makes listening to it so much more interesting.

Overall I enjoyed this audio version of the new testament. The sound quality was spot on. This had the usual deep bass of James Earle Jones. I have but one complaint. At times it seemed that Jones was reading a bit fast. Other than that I really liked this audio version of the Bible.

Thought I was getting the whole Bible - print size of the title is misleading. But the quality of the product and the price are still excellent. If I had known I was only getting the New Testament - I would have bought it anyhow.

James Earl Jones has a wonderful speaking voice. I was disappointed to hear the music in the background--very distracting. I have purchased the Bible by Alexander Scourby--comes in a very nice case; his voice is wonderful--more inflection than Mr. Jones, which I like--and NO music. Costs a little more; however you get the O.T. as well as the New and a nice case. The other CDs were in a cardboard box without a lid.

Excellent set of DVDs. James Earl Jones has a steady, calming voice. I highly recommend this set.

Alleluia is the Song of the Desert: An Exercise for Lent and other Sacred Times

From Publishers Weekly

Lent is, at its core, a recognition that "Christ is our spiritual bread" in the midst of the barren desert, claims Episcopal priest Hart. That desert is not a physical location so much as a spiritual state—"an inner place where we come to have a first-hand experience of God." The Lenten practice of repentance is intended to bring us to this desert place, from which we can emerge refreshed and singing the titular alleluia. Drawing from a rich well of wisdom from spiritual writers such as Thomas Merton, Eugene Peterson, Rollo May, William Blake, C.S. Lewis and Henri Nouwen, this contemplative book is mature and carefully seasoned. It can be used by individuals, but was written specifically for small spiritual formation groups; to this end Hart provides several appendices on how such groups can effectively use its exercises and teachings. Awesome! I had to have this cookbook after a co-worker brought in the Oatmeal cake to a potluck. OMG! Then I made it at home - yum. And then I made it again to take and share with another group - yum. Lots of folks asked and seemed like many were going to be getting this cookbook for their very own. I will admit I have yet to branch out to other recipes, but they will be amazing I am sure. My co-worker (the one who originally introduced me to it) has made several things and has raved about them all.

I lost my well-used copy of this cookbook in a house fire years ago, and I'm SO happy to have another copy back in my kitchen! It is crammed full of tasty, accessible, family-friendly recipes that can be made without having to hunt specialty shops for food-snobby ingredients. And the stories and photos make it a pleasure to read. Granted, I have a food-snob streak in me a half-mile wide, but this is still an all-time favorite that I highly recommend!

This cookbook is fantastic. Here's a tip, use the Cinnamon Roll recipe and you'll be a huge hit with friends and family. The roll recipe is seriously the best I've ever had!! My husband makes them on Christmas morning and it's become a classis tradition. The price of this book was unbeatable and it was in excellent used condition. So happy with this purchase!

I get so tired of cook books that give you caramelized onions with brie. Or watercress and avocado sandwiches. This book is not that! It is food that doesn't come from a can, box or bag. And it's not 'froofy' food either. This could be called, the Amish guide to comfort, stick to your ribs cooking.Mashed potatoes, gravy, chicken, every kind of pie that your grandparents talked about but the recipes forgotten. And they have one in there that tells how to make Whipped cream and it won't separate once it's whipped! That alone is a recipe worth having.Okay... I'm done drooling. Next are the pictures, well the pictures should be first since they're the ones that grab your attention to read the book in the first place. They are wonderful and give such a view to a person who's never even been into Amish country. And the narrative the author gives about the lives of these people. Amazing.A great book, and everyone I've shown it too has been impressed. (more so when I tell them that's the book I got the recipes out of) Real food tastes so much better than from a box. And this is the book that give real recipes.

What can I say I'm perpetually busy with three small boys and cooking always seems to allude me culminating in constant eating out.I have several cookbooks, either the kids won't eat the recipes I make, they taste awful, or it's to expensive with all the ingredients. This book is an absolute jem for the mother who needs to be able to fix a simple meal, quickly, and without all the ingredient fuss. Most of the recipes in here call for flour, butter, oil, lard, sugar. You know your basic staples. My kids love these recipes. The apples I made in brown sugar, fantastic. Tastes just like Cracker Barrels. I also like the fact that when your cooking this way the preservatives are at a absolute minimum, which is great. For those of you who commented on how healthy this book is please look into your history books or pictures of your grandparents. You can't find the fat person. I've been to several countries and America is by far the fattest. The other countries all lacked skim milk, low fat this, fat free this, and corn syrup in everything.I am by the way overweight and haven't gained a pound from this book. Moderation my dear. I've actually lost weight. Great book, I highly recommend.

I got the cookbook last week, i took 3 days to tab the recipes/pages i wanted to try. I had a ball cooking all this weekend; it really was fun! These are the results, in the order that i made them:Hot Water Pie Crust: 0 stars! 1 cup of lard made the dough, my hands and everything smell like lard by the time i got done. After refrigerating it overnight, smelling it in the morning with intention to prebake it for the Brown Sugar Pie recipe, i decided to toss the dough in the trash instead. Yuk.Apple Pancake: 5 Stars! Really good.Pat-In-Pan Pie Crust: 5 Stars! Excellent EZ crust!Amish Brown Sugar Pie: 5 Stars! YUMMY!! It stuck to the sides of the glass dish really bad but the pie was soooo good that it didn't matter. OH, if you try making it, it is SUPPOSTO' be kinda runny, but if you wait at least 6-8 hours it thickens more and overnight in the fridge it actually solidifies pretty good.Asparagus Pie: 1 star. The overly thick sauce stayed put on top like mashed potatoes (but without the good flavor of the potatoes and never ran between the asparagus or eggs, it just sat on top :P , and having eggs there was a bit odd but okay. The flavor was nothing great. Definitely won't be making that one again!Dandelion Greens w/ Hot Bacon Dressing: 4.5 Stars. Really tasty, just way too thick; using 1/2 flour will fix the recipe next time. Definitely will make again. That's what i've cooked this weekend, along with a roast and pork chops etc. It was a fun weekend experimenting with the Amish cooking. Overall i give the recipes 4 stars, but mind you, if i was grading it on a curve i'd give it 5.5 stars because any cookbook that you find several recipes that have potential to become favorites is actually doing pretty-excellent.

This is awesome. I have already book marked so many recipes to try. I did try the 6 week bran muffins immediately. They turned out great.I tend to collect a lot of cookbooks. A lot of times, I look at them and throw them to the side. This has many recipes that I will be trying out.Highly recommend!

This book is wonderful. It not only contains authentic ethnic recipes, it tells a factual, beautiful story of the Amish and Mennonite communities. The pictures are breath-taking. I highly recommend this beautiful book for anyone interested in this culture as well as some really wonderful recipes that are authentic, unlike so many recipes in other similar cookbooks that list canned soup in the ingredients as well as recipes that are not part of this culture. This book is the real thing.
