Review
“Leonard Chana spoke, and painted, from his heart and deep cultural roots. His shared insights into the past and present of the O'odham, leavened by his gentle humor and unsullied by third-party interference, have no peer in the published literature of his people. While The Sweet Smell of Home is about these quintessential desert dwellers, it is also about all of us who find ourselves joined in an enterprise we call ‘life.’ ” —Bernard Fontana, author of A Guide To Contemporary Southwest Indians “The insight of oral culture highlights artistic perception in this heartfelt book. For a cultured artist such as Leonard Chana, the words are in the art and the art is in the culture.” —Jose Barreiro, National Museum of the American Indian “Leonard Chana’s drawings and paintings reflect his deep love for and understanding of his place and culture. His commentary gives us even greater access to the next-door but far-off world of the Tohono O’odham. A truly generous book.” —Jim Griffith, The Southwest Center, University of Arizona “Rarely is the life of an artist so clearly captured and illustrated in the author’s own voice. To hear Chana’s stories surrounding each artistic venture makes his work come alive.” —Susan Penfield, author of Forty Years On

What to say about this book that will apply to any potential reader? It's not possible. If you're O'odham, or from southern Arizona, or anyone who knows and cares about the land and culture of its people, this is a book that you will just plain want to own, and you probably already know that. A lot of the art in it will already be old friends: you remember it from Byrd Baylor's books, or saw Leonard Chana's cards or prints for sale in Tucson or Sells, or maybe bought some (as I did) directly from him at the Wa:k Powwow or some other local festival. The whole range of his work is in the book, from the familiar stippled pen-and-ink work and his watercolors to less widely known painting on gourds and pottery. The quality of reproductions is excellent--there are useful blow-ups of detail for some of the larger works--and the art is complemented by a fine selection of photographs showing things like waila dances and toka (stick) games that are themes of some of the drawings. The art will be more immediately accessible to outsiders than Chana's narrative, which is taken from taped interviews that have been lightly edited. The more you know about O'odham history and tradition, the Sonoran Desert setting and the local geography, the easier it will be to follow the conversation without feeling lost at times. (It is so intensely oral that I really wish one could listen to the original recordings, to hear the cadences of the voice.) The editors have done a good job of explaining local references, however, and the art itself is the best introduction to the places and people that make up the fabric of Chana's life.
EXCELLENT. This is a wonderful book directly in the words of one of the most outstanding American Indian artists. As renowned ethnohistorian Bernard Fontana says on the back of the book, ""His shared insights into the past and present of the O'odham, leavened by his gentle humor and unsullied by third party interference, have no peer in the published literature of his people. While the "Sweet Smell of Home" is about these quintessential desert dwellers, it is also about all of us who find ourselves joined in an enterprise we call 'life'." Highly recommended.
As beautiful inside as its cover.
The Sweet Smell of Home allowed me to be as a fly on the wall listening to Leonard Chama describe his art and his life growing up within the Tohono O'0dham culture. This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I enjoyed the art, I enjoyed the words and I appreciate the knowledge I gained from this remarkable presentation. I couldn't recommend it more.
Beautiful tribute to a great artist, an important figure in 20th century Native American painting and drawing, and a sweet man.
When I read this book I can hear Leonard's voice as if he is talking to me. All of his artwork is amazing!
I enjoyed reading about the life of Leonard Chana. He was an extremly talented artist and caring person. His sensitivity is revealed in his works.
Great book of a little know artist. Okay I have reread this book, and my appreciation of Chana's work only grows. A self taught artist who spent time studying Master artists he related too. A man who overcame alcohol and drugs and was humble about it. Chana has left a legacy of love and compassion not just for his Tohono O'odham (Desert People)but for all to enjoy. Well worth reading and owning. The Sweet Smell of Home: The Life and Art of Leonard F. Chana
