Why is it that when we see a square with a parallelogram attached to its top side and an equally sized parallelogram attached to its right side that meets the parallelogram on top that we "see" a three-dimensional cube rather than a two-dimensional hexagon? Rudolf Arnstein's Art and Visual Perception: A Psychology of the Creative Eye seeks to answer this question among many other curiosities about how the eye perceives. It isn't the most tedious book I've ever read, but it's certainly a pedantic one.The book was recommended by one of the instructors at a photography workshop I had taken in Death Valley a couple of years ago, saying he found the book extremely inspiring. Because I admire this photographer's work so much, both his photography and his lyrical writings on the subjects of photography and creativity, I was looking forward to reading a book which, hopefully, would have a similar impact on me. The book does have a number of useful gems, and it's certainly a worthwhile read. However, I don't think reading this book will elevate my photography and writing to this particular photographer's level.The book begins slowly, starting with the basics, taking up balance first, then shape followed by form. It was easy to see that the author was building, bit by bit, a foundation to support the more complex chapters in the book on growth, space, light, color, movement, and dynamics, concluding with a final chapter on expression which tied all of these elements together. My favorite chapters were the ones on space, light and dynamics, because I gathered the most information useful for my own photography in these chapters.I liked that Arnheim recognized the importance of the role the observer plays in "creating" a work of art, even though the observer's role may not necessarily be a positive influence:   This explicit acknowledgement of the viewer is at the same   time a violent imposition upon the world represented in the   picture. The perspective dissociations are not caused by    forces inherent in the represented world itself. They are   the visual expression of the fact that this world is being   sighted. (p. 294).I never had considered my observation of a work of art to be a "violent imposition" but rather one of fervent adulation. I don't just like art, I *love* it. Everywhere I visit, going to the local museum is a priority, and I have gathered a few works for my personal collection. I had to wonder if Arnheim would have viewed my ownership of these works as not just an assault, but a kidnapping as well!Arnheim makes an interesting point about light. Ordinarily, we humans think of light as the natural state of things, but Arnheim asserts that the opposite is true:   [S]ince man's attention is directed mostly towards   objects and their activities, the debt to light is not   widely acknowledged. We deal visually with human   beings, buildings, or trees, not with the medium   generating their images. Accordingly, even artists   have been much more concerned with the creatures   of light than with light itself. (p. 303).Arnheim cites Rembrandt as one of the rare artists who recognized that we live in a world full of darkness, brought to life by light.Arnheim insists that tension is one of the elements necessary for constructing what could be considered an outstanding work of art: "We envisage the mind as an interplay of tension-heightening and tension-reducing strivings." (p. 411). On the following page, he sets out what might well be considered the principal thesis of this text: "Visual perception consists in the experiences of visual forces." (p. 412).   I found the following quotation about the training of artists quite interesting:   If expression is the primary content of vision in    daily life, the same should be all the more true    of the way the artist looks at the world. The    expressive qualities are his means of communication.   They capture his attention, they enable him to   understand and interpret his experiences, and they   determine the form patterns he creates. Therefore   the training of art students should be expected to   consist basically in their sharpening their sense of   these qualities, and in teaching them to look    to expression as the guiding principle for every   stroke of the pencil, brush, or chisel. (p. 455).It describes very well the approach used by the two instructors of the workshop. It was assumed we already knew basic camera techniques. Their intent was to get us to see the Death Valley scenery in a more visionary manner, rather than just make the snapshots taken so often by tourists visiting the park.Near the conclusion of his text, Arnheim again stresses the importance of the role of the observer, and amplifies his earlier statement:   [S]ince the pattern of transmitted life-giving energy   is not simply recorded by the sense of vision but   presumably arouses in the mind a corresponding   configuration of forces, the observer's reaction is    more than a mere taking cognizance of an external   object. The forces that characterize the meaning of   the story come alive in the observer and produces   the kind of stirring participation that distinguishes    artistic expression from the detached acceptance   of information." (p. 460).Arnheim's otherwise tedious text has many more gems such as these four samples which makes this a book worth reading, However, don't expect an exciting ride, as this is a quite erudite book. At first I was planning to slam him for failing to provide proper citations to his sources, but then in a section following the body of the text, Arnheim had drafted an extensive set of notes and citations as well as additional commentary. DO be sure to read the notes. The index, however, is pitiful, Arnheim did an especially good job of analyzing the artworks he described; they were very much like the analyses a student in an art history class would write. In addition to a decent index, the book also would have benefitted from many more color plates, The book contained only two color plates. A few of the artworks were black and white prints, and others  were represented only by line drawings. Most of the art works described in the book were not depicted within the text at all. One would have to seek out the actual images in order to fully appreciate the art works he discussed.

this is a great book. and I recommend it it really. especially if your really serious about understanding visual language and how our brains reads and understands things like line and shape. But it comes with a warning. this book is long and hard to get trough.I think that as a designer, be it graphic designer or concept artist. I personally am studying visual development. this an important read. what you learn in class starting out when it comes to universal design principals is dumb down and basic. and you learn the rest from trial and error and experience. and most art books are usually entertaining. this is a thick book with little parting, few pictures and reads like your in college level science class.if you really really want to beyond the basics and into the science of visual design. read this book. it very informative. and I did help me grow. but honestly I haven't been able to finish it. I kinda started swimming it. I mean to explain one theory it will go on and on for ages. and it sorta became like ok I get it. so I recommend this book but be warned. it's not for everyone.

Arnheim's book on the creative eye has survived well over half a century, for a reason. This is a truly seminal work on "seeing" and composing artistic images. He deals primarily with painting. I am a photographer. This book means as much to the current photographer with digital camera as to the artist with easel canvas and brush. Fascinating reading illustrated with classic examples. Re-shapes the mind. I bought copies for all of my friends who are, like me, serious shooters.

Great cookbook with a Korean flair. It has everything you wanted on korean cooking from simple and traditional cooking to westernized and colonialism influences that happened in Korea like the WW2, Korean-Chinese War, Korean war, etcetera.

Exactly what I was looking for! I love trying new foods and am always interested to make some of the recipes but ethnic food isn't always available in traditional American cook books. This book not only has just about every Korean food that I've tasted before, but, also offers a chapter on tradition and culture of Korean food preparation and serving, and even a little bit about table manners!The 135 recipes themselves range in difficulty from easy to complicated, but most seem to be on the easy side. Each recipe gives you a "prep time" and a "cook time" so that you know before you begin what to expect.The only thing that the book lacks is photos of the finished product. The image on the front is nice and I would love to see what it is that I will be cooking, especially when some of the items I have never seen, nor heard of. *I received a sample of this item in return for an honest and unbiased review*

So many delicious recipes. I really miss living in Korea and this recipe book is fairly simple to follow and fix many of my favorite dishes. It will be hard to follow these recipes if you cannot get some of the items so you either need an Asian market near you or just order the products online from Amazon. Some dishes also need special equipment but there are ways around that if needed.

This book is the best korean cookbook i have ever found. I am half korean and grew up on korean dishes, but my mom could never translate measurement amounts other than by showing me how much she scoops by hand. This author shares stories that are similar that i could relate to. I am now better able to mimic my mom's dishes.Dishes differ depending on what region in Korea you are from. These are similar to my mom's region. Also, she has some more complex dishes here that my mom never had the privilege to enjoy in Korea because of her poverty. I have had wonderful experiences cooking with my mom and hearing her stories.This book is amazing. If you want to make authentic korean food, this cook book is simple and easy to understand.

This cookbook was quite an interesting collection to my cook books.Korean food is quite different from what I had tried before. The book itself was really fun to read. I really appreciate it when the dishes are represented with the help of pictures as it really brings out a depth to cooking and makes it even mire interesting. There were many ingredients which I did not have in my daily cooking that I had to purchase for this kind of food.All in all the recipes were not that difficult and the taste was great. I'm not much of a Korean food eater, I'm very picky with what I choose to eat. However, after receiving this cookbook, I'm actually excited to try some of the recipes! Not only does this cookbook have recipes but it also talks about the Korean food culture, rituals & etiquette, and essentials in the pantry and cookware. It starts you out with basic stocks, sauces, and marinades then moves onto different meals ranging from bar food to soups and stews to different meat entrees and even included drinks and sweat treats. One of the recipes that I'm highly interested in trying is the Korean-Style Sweet Potato Pizza. I love sweet potatoes and I love pizza, so why not throw them together! I am very excited to experiment with some of these new and delicious sounding dishes! I admit i do not know much about korean food. I know i love spicy food and flavorful food so i was eager to dive into this book.The first part is all about korean food and culture history and ettiquite. I loved learning about different table manners and how food is prepared and the different types. It was a great intro and really got me psyched. You can just tell the author loves her culture and food and took great care with this cookbook.The recipes are easy to follow and the images, though feq, look delicious. There are a few ingrediants i would have a hard time finding and would have to search online but not many. Most of the recipes are simple and short with a few requiring quite a few ingrediants. All of it sounds so yummy though! Its broken down into sections and there is even a dessert part. This is a great book for korean food newbies or seasoned cooks alike and i cant wait to try some of them.Note - I have recieved this item in exchange for an honest review.

I got this cookbook because my husband loves to try new things. The recipes are easy to follow, and I like that they are broke up in different sections such as, Appetizers, Side Items, Main Courses, and Desserts for example. I think some of the desserts look like they will be amazing, and I can't wait to try out different recipes throughout this cookbook. There are some ingredients that you can't just pick up at your local store so you do want to make sure you have a Korean market, or a place that offers or can order an ethnic variety of foods. We gave this to my father as a gift to share with his toddler grandchildren. We all love it so much that we'll be buying another copy to keep at our house! The songs are so fun (and often funny), and the illustrations go along with each song and provide for nice conversation with the kids. As a words/lyrics geek, I love seeing all of the words in print. I like that the songs have some advanced vocabulary; it's pretty cute to hear a 3-year old singing about "...the raccoon's masquerade ball." We also love the themes of the songs: Being outside, camping, music, animals, acceptance, living a simple life, etc. We love this book and CD and hope to see The Okee Dokee Brothers in concert in the future!

This is a beautifully illustrated and fun book with selections from each of the three trips the okee dokee brothers took to write their three albums Can you Canoe, Saddle up and Into the woods. It was fun to read the short descriptions of how each of the songs were written. Since our whole family including grandparents , parents and grandchildren sing these songs together often it is fun to have the lyrics of these songs in this lovely book.

We LOVE the Okee Dokee Brothers! Their music is so clever, so imaginative, so folksy, and something adults can actually truly enjoy. It has been the theme music for our camping and hiking trips. These books are so great because it helps paint a picture of the songs and just makes it that more fun! It's also the equivalent of reading the lyrics of a CD booklet ;). My 9 year old loves reading the words while my 4 year old loves finding the songs in the book as they play.

We absolutely LOVE everything Okee Dokee Brothers in our house. We've seen them in concert twice. This book is awesome because it has the lyrics (and beautiful pictures) to some of our favorite songs. My son (4 1/2) pops this CD into his player, plops down on his bed and read/sings along- sometimes giving me 45min of freedom ;-)We even bought this book for numerous friends; as a way to introduce them to our favorite band!

I love the "Field Journal" to get some background on the songs. Favorite songs: Through the Wood and Can You Canoe? We are learning about instruments in our preschool (particularly the banjo) so the Jamboree was perfect for the kids to listen to and pick out the banjo sounds!

A fun,happy book and CD for the younger kids!

We love the Okee Dokee Brothers. We listen to their music all the time and it's one of the few "kids" music bands that I actually enjoy. So this book was great. My daughter loved reading the lyrics with me and listening to the CD. The pictures are also done very well.

The only complaint I have is that these songs are super catchy and you will get an ear worm. I wake up almost every morning with one of these songs in my head. Besides that, It has become the new bedtime cd, car cd, and bedtime book. Our whole family loves this duo!!!

An astonishing book. I got my copy yesterday, stayed up too late reading it, and finished it today--even though I should have been doing other things. This story covers a subject rarely seen in children's fiction--life in East Berlin before the wall came down. The story is gripping and fascinating. Ten-year-old Noah's parents take him into East Berlin, changing his name to Jonah and behaving mysteriously in a world that becomes increasingly surreal. Noah brings his copy of Alice in Wonderland with him, and soon he realizes that he too has fallen down a rabbit hole of sorts. Lonely at first, he befriends an imaginative girl named Claudia (Cloud), whose parents disappear, and have died, she is told, though she fantasizes that they are still living but have just forgotten her. Her theory and magical projections turn out to be in part true. Kids will be gripped by Noah's story and will be thrilled by the novel's mysteries--trying to figure out what is really happening and who is spying on whom--even as they learn a great deal about history and life in divided Berlin. The ending is poignant and powerful--but ultimately happy, as the novel is set in 1989, when the wall came down. Teachers will be able to use parts of this book to fulfill nonfiction reading requirements, as the "Secret File" sections after each chapter fill in historical information in a unique, very kid-friendly narrative voice. The ending also invites kids to meditate on reading "nonfiction." She is working on her dissertation about schools and children with problems like her son's. Noah learns that all of the German lessons he has been taking had a purpose. They will be flying into East Berlin. Noah has a new name and new rules. He is now known as Jonah Brown. He can't do anything that will bring attention to himself or his parents. He must not question anything because the walls have bugs. He isn't allowed to go to school even though he has taken their test. He meets a girl in his apartment building named Claudia. Because of his stutter, he ends up calling her Cloud-Claudia. She names him Wallfish. What happens when they are caught up in something that they were not a part of. How will the secret he knows about Claudia affect their friendship?Because I'm an adult and remember the fall of the Berlin Wall, this book was so important for me to read. I have always been fascinated by this topic. My father was stationed in Berlin when he was in the Army. This is such an important piece of history that unfortunately isn't really taught in schools. I do my best to at least introduce it to my sixth graders to the topic. I want them to start their own research on such an important topic. I am impressed with the way the author handled the topic. The reader is right there and can feel the strain the people living on the East side of the wall must have felt, especially if they didn't agree with the politics at the time. This is a book I will definitely promote to my students. I had an extra copy so I passed it along to my granddaughter who had picked it up to look at. Thank you Anne Nesbet for creating a perfect book at the perfect time.

These panels in bold not only explain what was really going on in East Berlin at the time, but how that became the experience of the characters.This might look like a 12 year old read, but it's meaty and suspenseful enough to be interesting into adulthood:The main character has his world pulled out from under him by his parents, and then spends the rest of the story trying to figure out what parts of his life are true and what parts are lies and whether his parents were lying to him before they moved, or only now after they moved. That alone is riveting - knowing that your parents are lying but you have no idea about what or when, or even why.Throw into that an entire state (East Berlin) built on lies and deception and a heartbroken orphaned friend also enmeshed in the lies and before you know it, your very survival is dependent on what you believe or what you think is true.

Noah's normal life is turned upside down when his parents whisk him away to a new life, complete with a new name and birthday, in East Berlin. The year is 1989, when the cold war is finally seeing signs of a thaw, but the people of East Germany are still at the mercy of the secret police. Even an outspoken girl named Claudia, who's dealing with a mystery of her own. The atmosphere, plot, and heart of this story are woven together deftly, and would appeal to readers of WHEN YOU REACH ME or THE THIEF, in my opinion. (Bonus: Each chapter ends with a 'secret file' containing cool historical facts.)A perfect book to hunker down with on a fall day with a cup of hot cocoa!

This is an excellent piece of historical fiction. It covers a period of history that's sadly missing from most elementary and secondary school curricula. The story, being told from the point of view of a 11 year old makes the observations and explanations real and accessible to even elementary school children.There is nothing controversial in this book .. no guns, foul language or bad habits. Just a great kid with a good heart trying to put the pieces of a complicated puzzle together in his mind.

I liked this book better than her other ones. It was a great story that gave insights into the way of life in Norway in the early to mid 1900's. It was a great pre-read to visiting Norway.

Beautiful true story, written in a simple style, infused witih warmth and love about memorable days in Norway before the Nazi invasion.

I guess I primarily loved this book because I was born in Norway and lived there for 26 years. Sigrid Undset died around the time I was born but customs and festivities in Norway were th same as when I grew up.also I spent every summer holiday at a seter in the mountains above Ringebu in Gudbrandsdalen so I am well acquainted with the life of a seter and the budeie or milking maid who runs it. All the things she writes about are very dear to me and will always live 7n my memory.

Despite having access to Lynda.com and Pluralsight.com which both have excellent Maya courses, having a book to highlight, mark the margins and return to as reference is very helpful. I am moving from 3DS Max to Maya 2018 and I wanted a book to gel the core concepts of modeling and shading, as well as animating, rigging, constraints... in Maya.Other than changes from 2016 to 2018 Maya, primarily a change in renderer (Mental Ray to Arnold), as well as MASH (unlikely to be covered in an intro book), this book applies well to Maya 2018.I found the book very practical, with interesting projects that could be completed in a reasonable amount of time, and reinforced key concepts. I would recommend this book for anyone new to Maya or moving from another 3D software package. I would have given this book a 5 star rating, but the picture quality in the text is poor. This is likely a combination of the printing, as well as image contrast and magnification. Some of the topics are complex (e.g. UV Mapping, rigging) and poor images make the topic more difficult to follow. There had at one time been videos online to demonstrate the content, but only a few can still be found on YouTube.My only other comment relates to efficiency. I wondered why the author created a "virtual studio" of planes for modeling, instead of using the built in image plane functionality. With the image planes you simply import an image for top, front, side views (and move them back -100 in their respective planes). Instead he has you build this from scratch. In the same vein, short-cut key creation could have been introduced for some common repetitive menu tasks such as center pivot, delete history, freeze transformations.In summary, this is a very well written book and I would highly recommend it, despite its being outdated for the 2016 version of Maya. As far as I can tell, it was updated for more than a decade of revisions since 2004, and its content appears to have greatly benefited from both revisions as well as the authors own extensive experience. It would be a shame if Sybex and Autodesk let this book fall into "out of print," even when online tutorials have largely taken over. If they do print a sequel in the future, I would recommend they improve the printed image quality (which by the way, was just as poor in the Kindle versions of their Mastering Maya book).

Great guide to Autodesk Maya! My only thought - a Glossary in back would be very handy. I'm new to 3D work, and would've liked a "quick reference" to the many unfamiliar terms and expressions.

Easy to find subjects and well organized. I recommend it. Despite I am a Maya LT 2018 user, until now, I found all I needed.

This book is the one for getting underway with learning Maya. This one will lead you to the more complete and thorough book Mastering Autodesk Mays 2016.

I'm learning Maya 2016 and 3D modeling and this is an essential resource for anyone else doing the same. Would definitely recommend Dariush's book!
