Highly engaging informational book that presents three unusual stories about plants and animals around the world, but only two of them are true!Two things I loved: that the authors want readers to go and research to find the truths (or lies) for themselves. The research guide gives them tips on how to spot “fake news,” where to go to find reliable sources, and when to use common sense. The world needs this now. The second thing was the book’s structure: organized in three parts (plants, animals, and humans) with engaging text features and side notes, Two Truths is a feast for the eyes that will have kids saying, “Wow!”

My fourth-grade daughter LOVES this whole series! We had to buy them for our home library. The facts are so unique and fun, and the illustrations/graphic design are clean and beautiful. Look forward to more of these books!

I teach 5th grade and my students love this book! They ask for it as a read aloud and enjoy debate as to what facts seem true and why they think this way.

I haven't had the chance to use this with my students yet. There is a lot of text for third graders, but I can work with that. This will be great in teaching about "fake news" - how do you know when something is real? How do you know what sources to trust? There are two additional titles in this series coming out and I'm looking forward to getting them too.

The format for this book is brilliant for middle-grade readers! Each chapter has three sections with three different "stories." Two are true; one contains a lie. However, all three sections contain some pretty unbelievable content. Such a fun book to read and discuss with kids. I love the extra tips about research included in the book. A great way to show students the importance of thinking critically, questioning, and verifying facts. You can't believe everything you read!

This is a fantastic book for kids of all ages! We read it around a pool this summer and had so much fun guessing the lie and learning so much from the truths! My teacher sister absconded with my original copy and then my second went to a well-deserving teacher friend! Buy it for classrooms and coffee tables! You won't be disappointed!

This book is on my holiday book gift list for kids. Anyone will be intrigued, but middle grade readers are really intrigued by the crazy living things in this book. I really enjoy book talking this book. Great gift idea!

I bought this book to use with my students (I’m a librarian). It was part of my unit on evaluating information with my seventh graders. They LOVED it!!! They want more! I will buy more books like this. Anything that is educational and engages students is a keeper!

This is actually the fourth in a series of books by John & Ruth Picard on antique trade beads. Essentially this volume is a 90-page descriptive catalog of Venitian Millifiore beads used for trade with Africa. Large format and measuring 8 1/2 by 11 inches ( or 21.5 by 28 cm), One of the most attractive and obvious peatures is that every bead is pictured in color and if known, details of the manufacturing process are provided! The Picards open by describing how these beads were made and defining some of the terms used throughout. Millifiore means "Thousand Flowers" in the Italian language, and indeed many of these beads seem to boast floral patterns. ALso included is a helpful article by Jamey Allen, "A Short History of Millifiore Work".Each one of these beads is a mini work of art, truely lovely to behold. If you are lucky enough to have some of these little treasures, or simply have an interest in glasswork and history, you will probably enjoy leafing through this work. Happy Beading :)

I bought this book after reading Melanie Mitchell's book Complexity: A Guided Tour. I wanted to read more about her Copycat project, and Fluid Concepts has a few chapters on that.This book is really a collection of articles about different projects attempting to model the way people think. It's not about artificial intelligence the way most people think of it nowadays (pattern matching), but more about how people relate ideas to each other. You might think it would be outdated, but I get the sense that most AI researchers have not pursued this way of thinking, instead focusing on neural networks (machine learning).The articles are collected with (some) hindsight and editing to prevent too much repetition. That said, it's still a bit repetitive in many places. However, that's forgivable because the ideas are so revolutionary that some repetition is desirable.Hofstadter's ideas seem right on to me. If you want to learn about those ideas, this book is more accessible than Goedel, Escher, Bach, though if you get interested in Hofstadter you should definitely read GEB.

This book is, as others have commented, different from DH's other more entertaining books.It is a serious attempt to discuss the real issues and difficulties with AI research. There is a lot of quite dry material and in places it is repetitive.It provides terrific insight into the problem of imitating human thinking at a deep level, and I found it very rewarding. It was also very interesting to follow the threads of how he went about doing research, and what he thought of other AI research.His views of various flavours of AI research were very instructive and inightful I thought.In summary a good book, but this is not (high quality) brain candy like Godel Escher Bach etc.

When I first read this book years ago, I found it very intuitive and exciting to look at the problems in this new way. It definitely makes a clear distinction between "expert systems" and proper intelligence. I recently went back and started reading it again. I'm still amazed by the false sense of simplicity of the problems Hofstaedter tries to solve and how complex they actually are. I wonder if they are not complete in some sense anyhow.It's great fun reading the book and following the train of thoughts is enjoyable and simple enough ... at least for somebody with a basic understanding in maths and maybe some AI knowledge. So if you started to read Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid but never finished it, this is a much easier and more pragmatic read than Hofstaedter's more generic book.

Explores the broad strokes of a decade's worth of research by one of the most eloquent and interesting cognitive scientists working. I personally would have been happier to delve deeper into the specifics of the projects--appending some of the papers in question would be a nice touch in a re-issue.

About the Author

Dick Neal was born and raised in Sanford, ME and graduated from Sanford High School in 1950. After high school, he attended the University of Maine, majoring in Wildlife Conservation. From 1951 to 1955, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a Radio Maintenance Technician. Upon discharge in 1955, he enrolled at the University of New Hampshire in the Electrical Engineering Program. He graduated in 1959 with a BSEE. Upon graduation, he went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and retired in 1986 after working 27 years as an Electronics Engineer in the Combat Systems Office. During the last 15 years of his career, he served as a Weapons Systems Manager on Submarines managing some of the world's largest and most complex weapon systems in the world. While working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, he lived in the Town of Sanford with his wife Rhea where they raised five children. During this same period, he was active in municipal affairs such as the Warrant & Finance Committee and the Planning Board. He was also on the Board of Trustees for the Goodall Memorial Library for 5 years and served on several School Building Committees. In 1987, he moved, with his wife, Rhea, to a 200+ year old farmhouse in Acton on the Milton Mills Road next to the school. In 1989, he was elected as Selectman/Assessor, where he completed three 3-year terms. During his tenure as Selectman/Assessor, he became a Certified Maine Assessor in 1993 and has written many of the Town of Acton policies, procedures and ordinances. He has served on many of the town committees and was the E911 Coordinator for the Town of Acton from 1998 to 2005. From 1998 to 2001, he served as EMA Director for the Town of Acton. He has been the Secretary of the Maine Federation of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association from 2003 to 2010. In 2010, he was elected 2nd Vice President of the Maine Federation.

I've been waiting for a book like this for a long time, and I was so excited to learn of it. And so my disappointment in the actual result was profound. While it's clear that Raskin knows the stories of the unbuilt lines in tremendous (even excessive) detail, the organization of the book is baffling, and the lack of maps and legible diagrams is unforgivable--especially since Raskin refers to the lines by their historic names (e.g., the Sea Beach Line instead of the N). This is an understandable decision, but it must make the book daunting for those who haven't internalized the old names. A list of lines and names in the back helps a little, but a map or series of maps would have made a huge difference.I know maps are expensive and that old ones often don't reproduce well. But Raskin needed to make the investment in new drawings to illustrate much of what he talks about. I'm very familiar with New York's transit geography, but I repeatedly had to go to other sources to figure out what he was referring to. The narrative structure is equally baffling, with stories coming and going in no particular chronological order. I can't imagine what a more casual reader would make of this.I really wanted to love this book, but I think only the most diehard of NYC railfans will get through this happily.

For anyone with a serious interest in the history of the New York City subway system, this book is a must have. The book cites many important references to substantiate the text in the book. It is a little disappointing that the book did not include discussions of the earlier steam and elevated. For example, The suburban extensions of the Manhattan elevated lines were never built, as shown on the February 1879 map in Harper's Weekly. When Brooklyn West End line was elevated, why was the route changed from that of the original surface line? One very perplexing question relates to the original 1885 Brooklyn elevated line (the "Old Main Line"). The Brooklyn Bridge construction began in the mid-1870's, and it was opened in 1883. Construction for the old Main Line must have begun in the early 1880's, when the Brooklyn approaches to the bridge must have been well known. So why was the terminus of the Old Main Line not re-routed from the Fulton Ferry to the Brooklyn Bridge approach?The book is replete with many logical examples of new routes, and route extensions that would have been highly beneficial to the riders of the New York City subways, but were never built, or as in the case of the Second Avenue Subway which is finally being built, is the subject of many cost saving measures, that limits its usefulness.However, one thing that detracts from the book is the poor quality of some of its illustrations.All-in-all, this book is an important addition the libraries of people with serious interest in the history of the New York subways.

Having been a subway rider and subway fan since the fifties, I always used to look out the front window whenever I could. Unfortunately full width cabs make that impossible now, but that's a different story. I always used to see those unused ramps and platforms and structures that should have had tracks but didn't. This book answered all my questions and filled in all the blanks. The quality of the many maps was disappointing, but maybe that's just in the kindle edition. This book is a "must read" for any NY Subway aficionado.

A thoroughly researched book rich in footnotes. The theme is largely political showing the conflicts between proposed routes, construction (subway vs. el), real estate developers vs. riders, private management (IRT and BMT) vs. city constructed and managed. (IND), and the conflicts between state and city. There were endless and enervating political delays which delayed construction of new routes for decades. The impacts of the great depression and WW2 are well drawn. One is impressed at the power held by various mayors, Robert Moses, and administrators who were advancing their own political agendas at the expense of sound economic and engineering considerations. These factors persist to this day. It is a wonder that the LIRR to the eastside, the extension of the 7 to the westside , and the initial phase of the 2nd avenue subway are underway despite the political and economic environment.On the negative side, the maps and figures are often poor copies barely readable with a magnifying glass. I wish for clearer and, perhaps, redrawn supporting artifacts.

A great read for rail historians, as well as anyone interested in NYC transportation history. Politics and dreams, along with a little insight, keeps it interesting.

I am a NYC history buff and have read a great deal on the history of the subway so I while I was expecting another perspective on NYC subway history, this was very disappointing. It turned out to be more of a detailed chronicle of transportation legislation. This can be very very dry if you are expecting to learn about actual subway history. Moreover it is more about discussions about about legislation in the form of sometimes very long quotes taken directly from minutes of meetings and reports which seems more like a short-cut the author decided to take rather than describe in a concise narrative. In fact for the most part I found the author's writing style often rambling and disjointed, turning from a discussion of a proposed route to the eastern Bronx to suddenly a route in Brooklyn. Since none of these routes were actually built, this, combined with the author's inability to compose in a clear, concise, and most of all engaging manner make for a very disappointing ead.

Learned about this book, when the author was giving the interview to MNN. Great and very informative read, filled with details about subway history in NY. if you are interested in the megalopolis infrastructure history, or have a thing for subway - it's a must read. Even in times of google - this amount of information so well organized and narrated is extremely valuable.

Very interesting for historical survey of NYC growth. Good transit buff satisfaction too.

So when I got The Big Bad Book of Bill Murray, a rare occurance happened in which I had already decided I loved the book before cracking the thing open...then slowly but surely, reality crept in.I'll start with the good. Quirk Books did a fantastic job with this. The layout, the photography, and how it all came together is a work of art. It's so aesthetically pleasing you can't help but want to pick this thing up and start flipping through it. Leave it out on a coffee table and your friends will indeed ask to borrow it...and possibly never return it. The publisher really came through on their end. I also can't deny that—at it's high points—it's one helluva read. I won't spoil anything, but Bill Murray is one of the most interesting people to ever work in film. Eccentric doesn't even begin to cover it.Here's where the problems start. Aside from aesthetics and content, this isn't really the Bill Murray book you're expecting and probably not the one you want, either. The author tells you that up front: Bill Murray had nothing to do with this book. It's assembled from articles, quotes, and interviews with people that knew Bill in one capacity or another—but Bill himself had no actual involvement. Nothing hugely revealing or new is brought to the table. Most of the information is already out there on the interwebs, but I can't help but admit it's nice to have all that information in one beautiful package.So here's where things get super dicey: the format. This book is put together like a Bill Murray encyclopedia—hence, not chronologically—which gives it this horribly disjointed feel. One page you're reading about Ghostbusters, and then a few pages later you're reading about golf, and then that's followed shortly thereafter by Cary Grant. The entire thing is a jumping of topics and time periods. I wondered if some of them were even worth mentioning. Maserati is Bill's favorite brand of car. "Summer Breeze" is one of Bill's most hated songs. These two topics each have their own very short sections. One page you're reading about a movie Bill was in during 2009 and the next you're reading about a movie he turned down years previous. For someone like me who has a pretty good understanding of his career, this was a little confusing. I can only imagine how it would read to a passive fan or someone not familiar with him at all.Lastly, Robert Schnakenberg's non-objective approach might rub some poeple the wrong way. Schnakenberg gives each Murray film two different star ratings--one for the overall movie, and another regarding just Bill. When Schnakenberg calls Scrooged "...easily the worst film in [Murray's] career," it sort of makes you question the entire system. Take the ratings at face value and watch the movies for yourself.All in all, I don't love this book; I love the idea of it. I love what it could have been, but there are plenty of anecdotes, quotes, and other factoids to carry the reader through. This is a nice reference guide that can easily be killed in one sitting. A hardcore fan should definitely own this.

This is NOT an authorized biography of Bill Murray. However, Robert Schnakenberg did his research, and did it very well. These are stories about, involving, or of Bill Murray and the highlights of his life. Some of the stories are directly from BFM himself, while others are pulled from interviews of other co-stars/directors/family members etc. etc. There are also detailed reviews of his most famous movies, the roles he played in them, and the importance/must-see "rating" of each film he starred in. Schnakenberg also describes/debunks some of the lore surrounding the worlds best gate crasher (his infamous 1-800 number, movies he missed out on or passed up, fights with co-stars). If youre even a casual Murray fan this book should be in your shelves.

I love the design of this book and the encyclopedic format makes it a nice reference book. The color photos are great, as are the many side "Tales from Murrayland" stories and other sidebars.My biggest complaint is that the author chose to write his own reviews of Murray's movies instead of just list facts, trivia or quote Bill Murray and other cast/crew members about the making of the movies. This became quite clear when the author gives "Scrooged" his lowest rating and labels it as "easily the worst film of his career," which is ludicrous, seeing as one of the author's three favorite Murray movies is the Garfield sequel!

Bill Murray is an icon of film. I knew that I would enjoy any book about him. Despite his insanely funny comedy, there is also a dark side to him, and I feel that the cover reflects that duality. The book is not a memoir or even a biography. It covers much of his life without really making it his life story.If you love Bill Murray, you will enjoy this book immensely, but you won't feel like you learned a lot about what makes him tick. That is a different type of book altogether. Still very enjoyable.

I bought this as a birthday gift for a friend, she was thrilled with the book. As other reviews mentioned, this is a fun review of Bill's work and is full of great quotes and images. Makes for a great coffee table book or a fun fan collectible.

Got this as a gift for a Bill Murray-loving cousin and had to flip through it myself to check it out. I don't know if it's necessarily a page turner, but it's definitely the kind of book that would be great on a coffee table or on the back of a toilet.

I have to admit, I have only looked at like seven pages of this thing, but it's a great coffee table book and Bill Murray is pretty awesome. Even when he's a jerk. Especially when he's a jerk.

I have read a great deal of legal history in my time; often it is dry as dust, overly detailed, and presented in endlessly long chapters that exhaust the reader with legal detail. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I began reading this new SHORT history of European Law by Tamar Herzog of Harvard (with some American as well thrown in). In 278 pages, the author takes the reader from Roman Law to Euro law, including helpful end notes and a very fine bibliography organized chapter by chapter. There is no fat here, and the narrative moves along smoothly through the short segment format the author employs.Nearly every chapter is crisp and incisive and delivers a great deal of concise information. The mystery of the book for me is that I took 15 pages of notes, reflecting a lot of information, yet this is such a relatively brief volume. Part I on ancient law turns particularly interesting when, following a fine intro to Roman law, the author turns to discussing the joining of Roman law and Christianity to form Latin Christendom. Then in Part Two, we are into the early Middle Ages touching upon Canon law, Germanic law, the development of the feudal system , and emperors seeking to gain the support of the Church as they exerted their own legal authority.Part Three deals with the later Middle Ages and introduces one of the author's central themes--the ius commune that arises out of the rediscovery of ancient Roman texts and the rise of new university centers for the study of law (such as Bologna). The trained scholars assume a major role in this legal rebirth, impacting on Canon Law, and feudal law, as a common legal culture--the ius commune--with its own scope, methods, intentions and solutions begins to gain a foothold. Also in this Part, the author delivers a most interesting chapter on the birth of the English common law. The writs system, the centrality of procedure, the conflict with royal legislation, and the introduction of equity are all covered--again economically. Part Four deals with the development of French law, the Reformation, and the importance of custom. A second chapter on the Common Law adds further insights as to how it emerged dominant vis-a-vis royal authority through the use of the Ancient Constitution argument employed by Edward Coke and others.Part Five deals with modernity, including North American developments, and the French revolution. A particularly valuable discussion occurs in Part Six, where the author tackles codification and its challenge to Common Law systems. Finally, the author finishes up with an effective discussion of European Community law and how it interacts with domestic legal systems.Compact yet complete, lean yet detailed where necessary, the book reflects the author's firm grasp on her expansive topic, while demonstrating once again how skillful organization and masterly writing can contribute so much to making a book outstanding. A bit too difficult for my eight year old granddaughter and maybe a bit too easy for the eleven year old. Just started the book so we will see how it goes

Our 11 year nephew should be in accelerated classes. He gets bored very quickly with his present curriculum in school. He told me over the summer that he needs more challenges. This book might not be considered a gift to most other kids. I’m confident that he’ll love it.

My 7 year old son really enjoyed the puzzles, and so far is going through the book page by page. Well illustrated and fun for him.
