Anyone who studies history knows that the preserved record of the past: documents, artifacts and testimony are only fragments of what was--most of the stories are lost to us. When a historian reaches a dead end, turning around is the easiest option, writing predictable scholarship about a subject that can be named and tamed, backed up with sufficient and convincing evidence. Where historians bail out, Richard Rubin keeps going--and this is his brilliance. He is after story, being a storyteller, not merely the historical record. Historians like to look for holes in the story but for Rubin craters and trenches are his subjects--along with the vacancies in the past, the unrecoverable. There is a lot of wondering and wandering in Back Over There but it's more than a war tourist's jaunt-through-the-battlefields travelogue, although he does seem to have quite a good time, which sometimes feels both odd and a nice break from all that historical slaughter. The Great War becomes present on these pages as Rubin walks us through French fields still churning up live shells, shrapnel, bullets, bayonets, horseshoes, wagon wheels, barbed wire. The French countryside (and the war dead and the killing equipment it absorbed) becomes almost the main character of this book. France lost a million men in World War I, an entire generation. Rubin's focus is mostly on the American forces, as it was in his previous book Last of the Doughboys, where he interviewed the last surviving centenarian American veterans, and here he retraces some of the steps of those veterans--Rubin digs the loss up again and finds what he can. There is a lot of wit here and humility in wrestling with the vastness of the Great War as a subject, and a really fantastic description of mud. And there is compassion in Rubin's storytelling, by compassion I mean the origin of that word--suffer with--as he relates the close-up battle descriptions of how those crushing numbers of dead in the Great War died, and it matters to him that he find exactly which corner of which farmer's field it happened in a century ago. Rubin cleverly weaves in what little we do know about some of the enlisted and a few civilians and introduces us to individuals (and whole towns) we wish hadn't died. Historians give us context and linear truths we can't untangle ourselves from--essential work--storytellers make us for a moment believe that we're still entrenched, that the past still matters. There are moments when Rubin holds back from really letting it all get to him and I wish he had pushed further into the weeds toward whatever darkness he's tracking--his writing is so good, you know he could have carried even more out of those fields--but there is the sense as he literally crawls out of massive craters on his hands and knees or traverses slippery tunnels at Vauquois that these stories won't let him go. Obsession is a word I'd use to describe his stroll hacking through the weeds of trenches and exploring the still intact concrete German bunkers in the otherwise bucolic French landscape. If Rubin stops short of the poet's mission to "rescue the dead" (Ignatow), he succeeds in making the past a place you can actually visit, he knows the way there and can show you--and his book builds a fascinating bridge back over. 4/16/17

Richard Rubin had the great honor to interview some of the last surviving Americans who had fought in the First World War before they passed from this life. He planned a journey to visit those places that had become part of his life through hours of conversation. This book opens on the scene of America's last casualty of this terrible war; Rubin is lost and under threat of being trapped in the clay-binding mud of Lorraine, far from any help. He takes us through the vast quantity of spent munitions, duds, and detritus of war that float to the surface of French fields every Spring, like so many rocks in the cultivated furrows of a New England farm. Those French farmers live a daily life of an uncertain future. His writing provides us a metaphor for the whole war. The abandoned bunkers, empty trenches, the art work in the chalk walls of the under-ground quarries that had sheltered soldiers from both sides are here in this book. The beautiful and warm hearted prose takes the reader through the former American Sector of the First World War, a part of France where people still hold fond feelings towards a people who crossed the Ocean to fight for their freedom. Many of those people will be found between the covers of this book. Whether you seek to understand this "Unknown American War" or are planning your own pilgrimage to a special place in your family's own World War 1 history, this book has something for you.

This book was exactly my kind of book! It was a blend of history and travelogue that was an attempt to make sense of what happened through the lens of the present and connect it to those places in France where Americans fought and how those places remember it today. I can see why the subtitle refers to Rubin as a “time traveler”. I am a History teacher and was motivated to be one, at least in part, by a desire to time travel myself. This book feels as much like time travel as is currently possible. Rubin’s travel to France on multiple occasions was motivated by his earlier interviews with the few living Doughboys left. All of those men were over 100 when Rubin interviewed him, and having read his earlier book The Last of The Doughboys, I appreciated his connections to places he was visiting to the men he had interviewed earlier. I have been to France multiple times, but have yet to be fortunate enough to see the tranches, monuments, or cemeteries connected to the Great War despite a strong desire to do so. Rubin provides a well written and insightful guide for anyone who wants to visit in person or vicariously through Rubin. The mines he explored near Chemin Des Dames revealed an untold number of carvings and graffiti from German, French, and American soldiers who left their marks during the First World War. These markings included several soldiers from Maine (where I live) including some references to Passamaquoddy culture. These were featured in a recent TV documentary that was quite popular and I highly recommend as a great supplement to the book. I was fortunate enough to see Rubin speak about this book at the Maine Historical Society recently and I was fascinated with the images of the graffiti from the mines. I can’t say enough positive things about this thoroughly enjoyable book. Despite being really busy, I read it all in about 10 days and had difficulty putting it down each time I read! One of my favorite lines from the book illustrates my thoughts on history in general, but more specifically, the way I have been thinking about World War Two for quite some time, “The Argonne is evidence that history folds in on itself again and again, and that, as I often view the Frist and Second World Wars as one conflict with a two decade cease-fire in the middle, a case could certainly be made that… if the king hadn’t stopped for pieds de cochon just steps away. No decapitated Louis, no First Republic; no First Republic, no Napoleon; no Napoleon, no rise of Prussia; no rise of Prussia, no Franco-Prussian War; no Franco-Prussian War, no First world War; no First World War, no Second World War; no Second World War , no Holocaust.” Later in the book Rubin once again makes a connection I can relate to when discussing the fighting near the Bois de Foret. His realization was that the land had been fought over for centuries by many different peoples until 1918 changed everything and there has been no fighting there since. He goes on from there to point out how the Great War is still important to this day. Throughout the book Rubin finds ways to make these connections. One big takeaway for me is how few Americans know anything about American involvement in the Great War and what a shame that is. I’m so glad, for the sake of the fallen, that he has written this book as a way to revive their memories and connect Americans to what happened in the War. The book is insightful and engaging and I truly enjoyed it! Thank you for stoking my interest in the Great War, now to I need to get back to France and see some of these sites! Anyone know of any travel programs for teachers that might fund this?

Not only is this a great book on Pastel, this is a very well executed art book. The images are great, good size and color clarity. There is a really great mix of artists presented. I will guarantee you will be introduced to many wonderful artists you have never heard of before. This is the type of book that, when it goes out of print, will quadruple in price. I own hundreds of art books. I would put this one in the top ten percent of those books regarding quality of content. Buy it !

This book is scholarly eye-candy, or aesthetic analytical heaven, or the perfect meeting of historical knowledge and some of the most gorgeous and skillful images ever created by man -- or woman! Highly recommended: there is no book like this on the market. Also, I had a query about a technical aspect and the author I contacted, Prof. Thea Burns, was extremely courteous and helpful.

This is a well written and highly informative book on the history of pastel. All of the major pastel artist are covered. The color plates are large and wonderfully produced on heavy, glossy paper, and the binding is strong, all as one would expect from the Abbeville Press.

This book was expensive but I split the cost with a friend. The color plates are wonderfully beautiful. I was surprised how pastels can look like oil paintings.

The best book I know on the Art of the Pastel. An excellent selection of figures and a very good text.

I agree with other reviews here. I have many books on Pastel, and this is my favourite by far! Beautiful quality, and even artists that are rarely mentioned in other books,( such as John Russell in Chapter 9) are featured.. The pastels are reproduced clearly and beautifully and the accompanying text is informative. Buy it! You'll love it!

Best book on the subject.

This is a great book, love it. If you love Pastels you will love this book.

For the Brave and the Determined, learning analysis from Principles of Mathematical Analysis (PMA) is a sublimely rewarding experience. (Dilettantes keep away.)PMA, a.k.a. 'Baby Rudin', is an introductory text in analysis for the serious student of mathematics. Back in 2004, this was the text used for the first semester of Harvard's freshman analysis/linear algebra course (Math 25, modestly titled "Honors Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra", the lite version of the infamous Math 55 sequence). A majority of students in the course came in with a working knowledge of proof writing, through high school mathematical olympiads, upper division college classes elsewhere, or both. Although the professor (Tom Coates, now of Imperial College London) was an excellent lecturer and was very helpful and patient, students without a background like this ("mathematical maturity") were generally left in the dust. Those of us who persisted in the course after the first few weeks found ourselves spending 15 to 20 hours a week working problems assigned from PMA or written by Prof. Coates. Problems in PMA ranged simple verifications, taking maybe five minutes of thought, to problems barely within the grasp of the smartest students in the class, taking many hours of struggle spread out over a few days.Content: As many reviewers have already noted, PMA is simply the best out there in terms of clear, concise mathematical exposition of one-variable advanced calculus (Chapters 1-8). Though known by analysts for his contributions to harmonic and complex analysis, Dr. Rudin ensured himself a permanent place in the canon with the publication of this text and its graduate-level companions "Real and Complex Analysis" and "Functional Analysis". Having browsed through copies of the first (1953) and second edition (1964), it's clear that the author "perfected" an already very well written text in this third edition (1976) and said "that's it" to greedy textbook publishers wishing to make money off of newer editions. Other than correcting some typos, this text has remained the same for four decades (and will remain so with Dr. Rudin's passing in 2010). Its continued use, more than six decades after it was first published, is a testament to the quality of this textbook. Here's a brief overview of topics covered. Chapter 1 introduces the real number system, the most important concept being the least upper bound property of the real numbers. An appendix constructs R from Q using the Dedekind approach. While the entire book is succinct and fantastically organized, chapter 2 on metric space topology deserves particular mention. This concisely written chapter (only 23 pages!) is strategically placed to serve as a cornerstone for the rest of the book. Assuming only rudimentary knowledge of sets and functions, Rudin gives the reader just a taste of topology to enable subsequent discussions on continuity and convergence to proceed in a general and abstract setting. Several interesting but less pertinent ideas (like the Baire category theorem) are included as challenging exercises at the end of the chapter. Though the abstraction introduced is challenging and most beginners won't see the point (yet), the reward is substantial, enabling celebrated theorems (e.g., Arzelà -Ascoli, Stone-Weierstrass) to be proved cleanly and quickly later on. The usual topics (limits, continuity, differentiation, and Riemann(-Stieltjes) integration) are covered in chapters 3-6. This is followed by an in depth discussion on sequences of functions, focusing on the interchange of limiting operations and polynomial approximation, in chapter 7, topics often discussed in a cursory manner in other introductory analysis textbooks. The coverage of power series at the beginning of chapter 8 seems to come a bit too late, given the importance of this concept; Rudin uses it as a springboard for rigorously defining the functions that everyone thinks they know (exp, log, sin, cos), followed by an outline of the Beta and Gamma functions and their miscellaneous properties, and an introduction to Fourier series. The topics at the end of chapter 8, while interesting, are not essential for a first course in real analysis. Back then, in Math 25a, we covered chapters 1-7 and the first half of chapter 8, minus the appendix on Dedekind cuts at the end of chapter 1 in 14 weeks. That still left us with one week of class, during which we started to cover linear algebra to get a head start on Math 25b in which real analysis of several variables was the main topic. (My freshman year roommates could not comprehend why anyone would be such a masochist....)In the remaining chapters, Rudin covers analysis on several variables (chapters 9 and 10), including differential forms and the generalized Stokes Theorem, and measure and Lebesgue integration (chapter 11). These chapters have been the subject of criticism, mostly due to their bare bones coverage of these intricate topics. In my opinion, they really are too lean to be pedagogically useful introductions. Moreover, chapters 9 and 10 would have benefited from figures or line drawings, given the geometric nature of the topic, but PMA seems to avoid these at all costs. (Rudin's definition of differential forms is essentially algebraic and makes no appeal to geometric intuition.) Nevertheless, because they are written in such a concise manner, they are useful as "cliff notes" or refreshers on these topics for review after learning them elsewhere. Besides the terseness, Rudin's outlines of these topics do not provide the reader with their full mathematical machinery, leaving out many important subtleties and non-elementary constructions (e.g., PMA develops forms in a way that only implicitly references their tensorial nature, defining them as formal expressions that are only meaningful behind an integral sign, rather than a mathematical construction in their own right, while measure theory is developed somewhat unconventionally using sigma-rings rather than sigma-algebras, which actually complicates some of the subsequent propositions), so one is well-advised to find other resources to become acquainted with these topics. For multivariable calculus, Spivak’s "Calculus on Manifolds" is concise though hard-to-digest without a good instructor, and it should be supplemented by Halmos’s "Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces" or Axler’s "Linear Algebra Done Right" to provide the requisite abstract linear and multilinear algebra background. Munkres's "Analysis on Manifolds" is a better alternative for self study (see my Review on this book). Bartle’s "Elements of Integration and Lebesgue Measure" provides a clear though not particularly thorough introduction to Lebesgue theory. Stein and Shakarchi "Real Analysis" also has an excellent introduction to measure theory and Lebesgue integration, and covers many other fascinating topics, but it is annoyingly not self-contained and references the earlier two volumes. (Math 25b ended up using Halmos and Spivak; Lebesgue integration wasn't covered, so it became summer reading.)Style: With the exception of a short introductory paragraph at the beginning of each chapter, the book consists almost entirely of a series of statements labeled Definition, Theorem, or Corollary (in that order) with only an occasional Example or Remark squeezed in. (The Examples and Remarks are important -- they generally address subtleties or common points of confusion for students.) This format is probably shocking and baffling for most people who start reading PMA. Persevere -- it will grow on you! Through his austere presentation, Rudin lets the beauty of the mathematics speak for itself. Flipping through my tattered and scribbled-on copy of the book from 2004-2005, I still marvel at the elegance and polish of the proofs -- without a wasted symbol or syllable yet completely rigorous if you put in the effort to scrutinize his arguments. Precisely for these reasons, however, students will find themselves reading and re-reading the text to try to figure out how Rudin managed to construct a proof and/or where the idea behind it came from. The diligent student should have pencil and paper in hand to try to construct his/her own arguments, which should lead to insights into Rudin's (more elegant) proofs. Also, since Rudin rarely remarks upon why the hypotheses of a theorem cannot be weakened, it is extremely useful to have concrete examples or counterexamples in mind when working through a proof. In retrospect, I found that it was this type of between-the-lines reading of the text, together with the excruciating process of working through the exercises, that led to true comprehension: no pain no gain!Ideally, a professor teaching from this text should motivate the definitions (and even some of the theorems) presented in PMA during class. (It's not always clear why Rudin proves something; he doesn't distinguish between main theorems and lemmas.) However, if you are teaching yourself, a less formal exposition with more examples and explanations and occasional diagrams to illustrate difficult concepts or facilitate intuition will probably be useful to read with PMA concurrently. Pugh’s "Real Mathematical Analysis," comes to mind. (Though at times wordy or long-winded, it adopts a conversational and infectiously enthusiastic tone. In addition, Pugh's text contains a large collection of interesting and sometimes extremely challenging problems. Highly recommended as a foil to PMA!) I understand why some say that PMA should not be used as a first text. However, I feel that the point of learning analysis is to be able to appreciate a beautiful branch of mathematics (as opposed to do something useful, like with calculus or diffeqs). Rudin offers exactly this, given the proper preparation. It's well worth the time and effort to work through PMA and see analysis the way it was meant to be seen, rather than to be introduced to a dull, watered-down version.A final remark about the style: if PMA sometimes reads like a collection of lecture notes, it's probably because it started out that way. When Rudin, then a freshly minted Ph.D., started teaching real analysis as a lecturer at MIT in 1950, there were very few analysis textbooks in English. Available texts like Hardy or Titchmarsh presented the classical approach without reference to topological notions. Because of the lack of suitable modern treatments of real analysis, he ended up writing one for his course. The first edition of PMA was published only three years later in 1953, based on the class that he taught. As the first text of its kind in English, PMA provided a model for the treatment of modern ideas in almost all subsequent English language textbooks in introductory analysis.Don't get discouraged! This is probably not like any textbook you've previously encountered (but this is the way mathematicians tend to write -- they don't like extra words and they certainly don't try to spoonfeed...). Spending hours to fully comprehend a few pages might feel crushing, but unless you're clearly destined to become a math professor, it will likely happen at some point when you study Rudin (e.g. his proof on the uncountability of nonempty perfect sets in chapter 2 for me). Bravely trudge ahead when it happens; it builds character, and it will eventually lead to a deeper, more intuitive and more satisfying understanding of analysis.

Amazon doesn't separate content from presentation forcing me to leave 1 star here based on the new hardcover quality. The cover is made of fragile cardboard sensitive to water and humid weather (see other reviews). The paper is thin and transparent. The printing was done by scanning the older (analog "infinite" DPI) version and reproducing it with lower DPI. The artifacts of that process are visible everywhere and on some pages even include pieces of hair/strand.I cannot justify the price for this. If you need the content, get a free PDF. If you want paper, print the PDF or buy the 90% cheaper international version. If you want a hardcover, get an earlier (blue, not purple!) version (got mine on eBay, super happy with it, and returning the one I reviewed).Pictures attached (1, 3, 5 new; 2, 6 old, 4 comparison).

First off, this book is dense. I bought this book for an introductory undergraduate course in real analysis. Through one full semester, we got through the first four chapters. That being said, for those brave enough to answer the call, Rudin leaves readers with a solid understanding of analysis.I bought the international edition, a.k.a. paperback version. My roommate has the hardcover version. My paperback took a lot of abuse over the semester, but it held up very well. The outside of the book is a little scuffed up from being stuff in my backpack, but, overall, it's still in good shape. My roommate's hardcover copy held up slightly better and looks a little nicer on the shelf... But, at a fraction of the cost of the hardcover, I am overall satisfied (it helped me get an A :) ).

I used this book as preparation for a graduate measure theory course, per the instructors recommendation.Based on my experiences, I would recommend this book to students trying to learn basic real analysis in the context of metric spaces. This book is well written, challenging and slightly terse. It is helpful to have some exposure to basic topology and real analysis in the context of R^n. However, this book is self contained and doesn't explicitly require any prerequisites other than proof writing abilities and the mathematical maturity to handle difficult material. If you are serious about being a mathematician, my recommendation is to work through this book on your own, outside of your normal coursework. Unless you go to a good school, this book will most likely be more difficult than the analysis you will see in a first analysis course. It is a challenging book and you will struggle.

This is a fine book, but it is my least favorite of Rudin's books (his other books that I've read and deeply enjoyed are Functional Analysis, Fourier Analysis on Groups, and Real and Complex Analysis). A student needs to have significant mathematics experience to learn from this. If you don't have experience doing proofs and especially quantification (making sense of things like "For all x in X there is some h>0 such that for all y in X some statement is true", and being comfortable with negating such statements), there are better books to learn from. Certainly if you carefully work through the proofs of all the theorems in this book and diligently try to do the exercises you can learn from this, but there are better ways. For example, Marsden, Elementary Classical Analysis, 2nd Edition, covers more material than Rudin does but is much easier to understand for someone new to analysis. Even if I were teaching an analysis course I would look at Marsden more than Rudin, because Marsden has many more worked out examples to use in lectures than Rudin does. Rudin would be especially tough to learn from for an independent learner.Rudin is a careful writer and does not lazily leave out details. But to learn from Rudin, because he is so brief and has so few worked out examples, you need to work through his proofs of theorems in detail, not just glance at them to get a general idea.

I have taught for 16 years in several local community colleges as an adjunct. Because I am paid only for my in-class hours, and not for any grading or prep time, to make ends meet I have also taught part time at several for profit 'colleges' where poor mostly non white students are over represented.I never understood why anyone would choose to pay 10x the cost for a 'class' lasting 4 weeks and covering little material instead of paying a much lower cost to take a real 16 week class at a community college. And at the community college I have real academic freedom to create the entire semester on Blackboard, adding extra materials, determining all assignments, tests, etc. At the for-profit college, there is ZERO academic freedom to create the courses! And those who do design them appear to lack the experience of being a programmer that I have (1989 - 2017)...they are merely academics pretending to know this field.Even when teaching MATH at the for profit 'colleges', with my B.S., M.A. and high school teaching credential in math,I am not allowed to create the course shell or decide the assignments, assessments or even the discussions. It is truly a waste of a degree when they ask me to teach their 'classes'. Meanwhile the school takes the students' financial aid and VA benefits DIRECTLY instead of the students receiving them and paying the school. This is truly a scam.

Prof. Cottom is one of the nation's foremost sociologists of higher education, and her first solo authored book is an incredible combination of scholarship and storytelling. Before her doctoral work, Cottom worked as an "enrollment counselor" in two for-profit higher education institutions with different sectors and clientele. With a keen eye for details and human relationships (and an extensive LiveJournal blog to help job her memory), Cottom describes her front line work enrolling students in Beauty College and Technical College, and the mythology of educational salvation that had her and her colleagues convinced that encouraging low-income, minority students to take on massive debts with their families to pursue degrees with questionable labor market value was an unquestionable social good. This front row seat to the student enrollment experience is complimented by later fieldwork from her doctoral work with a diverse set of sources: SEC filings from university holding companies, interviews with woman seeking doctoral degrees from for-profit universities, and her own exercises in enrolling in these universities. Both her stories and her more technical analyses are compelling, and her ease at moving back and forth between the two is one of the remarkable characteristics of her writing.Cottom's thesis is that the driving forces behind the rise of for-profit, financialized Lower Ed are persistent social inequality combined with a shift in risk from institutions to individuals, most prominently here a shift in responsibilities for job training from employers and government to individual students and employees. This shift is partially masked by a collective myth-making about higher education as a source of the collective good, allowing for-profit conglomerates to ride the moral coattails of elite universities: elite Ed's explanations about why they don't need to distribute their enormous endowments or get taxed justify Lower Ed's expansion and growth to serve non-traditional students. But the conditions for Lower Ed to rise required a bipartisan faith in markets as the rational mechanism for distributing educational credentials, rather than a collective responsibility to use policy to support full employment and public funding of higher education. As carefully as Cottom describes the stories of individual actors, the real intellectual accomplishment is interpreting their actions as parts of larger systems.Cottom refuses to blame the poor judgment of students or the evil hearts of college enrollment managers, but insists that we see the society that we all build and share as responsible for the social inequalities that produce Lower Ed.

Here's a topic we need to be concerned about. Why people want or need to go to college, what kind of knowledge do they seek, and what outcome are questions many students may not ask with any care. The for-profit model has different goals from the traditional non-profit, and while we may find qualities to like or dislike in either, the leap of faith undertaken by students in the for-profit motivation should worry us. Cheers to Tressie McMillan Cottom for wading into the topic and making facts available to students and their families. Give it to a friend whose son or daughter is considering one of these schools, and learn the difference so you know where your money is going.A Child's Book of Shadows

I gave away my first copy of this book more or less immediately after I finished reading it, so urgently did I think another colleague needed it. I bought a replacement, then ordered eight copies for my entire cohort of first-year experience students at Boston University, when it turned out they didn't really know about for-profit education. I've recommended it to teachers and lawyers and bankers and I recommend it to you.

This excellent book is written by a top-notch academic, sociologist Tressie McMillan Cottom, who went to the trouble to make the book interesting and engaging with lots of personal stories, including stories fro her own experience doing recruitment for two for-profit schools. Why would people pay so much more for a for-profit college whose degree is worth less in prestige? There are real answers that are partly because many of the schools are predatory but also because they meet people's real needs that are not being met by other colleges. And the whole educational system has bought into a logic that puts all the risk for advancement into or even maintenance of economic security on individuals' getting more credentials, not on employer training or experience-based career paths. I've been recommending this book to everyone I know who works in higher education, and I also recommend it to everyone else who wants a good critical understanding of what is wrong with higher education today as well as why for-profit schools are doing so well and why most consumers should try to stay away from them if they can.
