Fascinating! This book is definitely on the right path. This book is pretty well designed. The pages are an off-white yellow tone. The information is fairly thorough but aimed more at somewhere between pop readers and light-duty researchers. So it is definitely worth a read. However, I did not see any reason to read this book more than once which shows some shortcomings for this vying to be a reference book.

When I first got the book I thought it wasn't very big and wouldn't have much new info. But it has so much information! I was very very happy with it. So many books on the Aztecs don't tell much about the aztec calendar but this book explains so much and goes into a lot of detail. I highly recommend this book for anyone that has an interest in knowing more about what the aztec calendar stands for.

Son loved it

well received by my friend

This book is well presented, but contains a lot of wrong information. Of course much of the culture is lost, so right/wrong are not easily established with certainty. But I can say with certainty that this book makes revelations, without evidence, that are completely absent from the academic literature. And it presents them as fact, not as fabricated guesses. And at least one description is wrong in terms of physics, so independent of what the Aztecs did or didn’t do, it is wrong (*). The very basics are close enough, so if you aren’t too serious about the subject, and don’t mind mixing of fact and fantasy, it is not a bad read. But if you get curious enough to want to know the truth, you will have to start over with a “real” source.(*) If you are curious enough to read this footnote, then this book is not for you. Specifically, the authors claim that the 52-year cycle was kicked off when a particular constellation was overhead, making the calendar accurate to within seconds. That is wrong, because this would only guarantee an integer number of rotations of the Earth about its own axis; it would not correct the position in its orbit around the sun.

Grammatical aside, there is no other treatise on pre-Columbian America and the Aztec Calendar as complete, concise and thought provoking as this one. I didn't notice the grammatical error until the fellow from Tejas spotted it. I was too amazed at having my perception of Native America shattered. After reading many books on the Aztecs, I bought this book and was favorably impressed by the depth, continuity and treatment of the entire subject matter. There is so much information in this book its astounishing. The bibliography contains over 200 sources. Direct eyewitnesses from the 16th century are quoted. The Time-Line is great. I will be referring to this book for years to come.

Everything I expected and more!

This book is the first of its kind. all in one book. before you would have to purchase several books. thanks to the writers research you only need this one book. i recommend if you are studying the calendar. you will not be disappointed...!!!!!

Amazon.com Review

The Amazon Spotlight Pick for March 2015: When George Hodgman left Manhattan for Paris to visit his aging mother, he didn’t realize it would be the beginning of an unintended, and indeterminate tenure as a caregiver. Did I mention that it’s Paris, Missouri? They say you can’t go home again, and in Hodgman’s case, you can understand why he wouldn’t want to—Paris hadn’t proven to be the most hospitable place for someone coming to terms with their sexuality. This was compounded by the fact that Hodgman’s parents didn’t approve of who he “turned out to be,” which was as specific as they were willing to get on the matter. Any gaps in their understanding were filled with an insidious silence that kept this otherwise loving family at arm’s length. I haven’t forgotten what this book is called and, no doubt, you will fall in love with the impossible and endearing woman that is its namesake. But at its heart, Bettyville serves as a poignant cautionary tale about the dangers of leaving difficult things unsaid, and in these pages, Hodgman practices what he preaches. –Erin Kodicek

Review

Nautilus Book Awards Gold WinnerPraise for Bettyville“A remarkable, laugh-out-loud book . . . Rarely has the subject of elder care produced such droll human comedy, or a heroine quite on the mettlesome order of Betty Baker Hodgman. For as much as the book works on several levels (as a meditation on belonging, as a story of growing up gay and the psychic cost of silence, as metaphor for recovery), it is the strong-willed Betty who shines through.” —The New York Times“A lovely memoir . . .You won’t finish this tale dry-eyed.” —People, Book of the Week“A gorgeously constructed memoir . . . Hodgman creates an unforgettable portrait of his mother, Betty—a strong-willed nonagenarian struggling against the slow-motion breakdown of her mind and body. He evokes her with wit and tenderness.” —The New York Times Book Review“Without a doubt my favorite book of the year. Wise, witty, and heartbreaking . . . a surprisingly profound and hilarious look at aging, mothers and sons, fathers and sons, growing up gay and small-town life in America.” —Nathan Lane, “Who Read What: Books of the Year 2015,” The Wall Street Journal“A humorous, bittersweet account of Hodgman’s caring for his aging, irascible mother.” —Vanity Fair“Hodgman has written what will be seen, even years from now, as the quintessential book on taking care. . . . His desire to empathize, his focus on goodness, his search for hope allow him to find the beauty in the hour of now.” —Chicago Tribune“An intimate, heartfelt portrait of a mother and son, each at the crossroads of life . . . Hodgman’s sharp wit carries the book ever forward.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune  “A superb memoir . . . Hodgman is by turns wry, laugh-out-loud funny, self-deprecating, insecure to the point of near suicide, and an attentive caregiver despite occasional, understandable resentments. . . . I have read several hundred American memoirs; I would place Bettyville in the top five.” —Steve Weinberg, Kansas City Star “In his tender, sardonic, and fearless account of life with Betty—who has never acknowledged that her son is gay—Hodgman delivers an epic unfolding of his lifelong search for acceptance and love.” —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution“Hodgman paints a witty and poignant portrait of a son and his mother reconciling their differences and learning, among other things, how to cook, come to grips with caretaking, understand unspoken sexuality, and treat each other with patience, love, and self-respect. Surely we all have a beautifully complex and hilarious (if not semi-dysfunctional) relationships with our mothers, but none of us are likely to commemorate it with the skill and humor of Hodgman.” —Los Angeles Magazine“An exquisitely written memoir about the complicated but deeply genuine love a son feels for his courageous, headstrong, vulnerable mother in the twilight of her life. George Hodgman is stunningly clear-eyed and yet so darned big-hearted. Bettyville is just wonderful.” —Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle   “The idea of a cultured gay man leaving New York City to care for his aging mother in Paris, Missouri, is already funny, and George Hodgman reaps that humor with great charm. But then he plunges deep, examining the warm yet fraught relationship between mother and son with profound insight and understanding. This book looks outside, too, offering a moving lament for small-town America. Hodgman tenderly evokes the time before family farms and small businesses were replaced by meth labs and Walmarts. Yet he’s not sentimental about that lost world—he knew its cruelties firsthand. As George and his mother come to terms with one another at the end of her days, the book begins to shimmer with something much more rare than love: a boundless, transcendent, and simple kindness. Bettyville is a beautiful book about the strange plenitude that comes from finally letting go of everything.” —Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home   “Bettyville is a beautifully crafted memoir, rich with humor and wisdom. George Hodgman has created an unforgettable book about mothers and sons, and about the challenges that come with growing older and growing up.” —Will Schwalbe, author of The End of Your Life Book Club“This is a superior memoir, written in a witty and episodic style, yet at times it’s heartbreaking . . . filled with a lifetime’s worth of reflection and story after fascinating story.” —Library Journal (starred review)“Hodgman writes with wit and empathy about all the loss he’s confronted with. Betty’s poor health is mirrored by the failure of towns like Paris, whose farms and lumberyards are now Walmarts and meth labs. Coming out in the age of AIDS, he lost the people he was close to when he had nowhere else to turn. . . . That doesn’t mean Bettyville is without humor—far from it. Paris eccentrics (one woman shampoos her hair in the soda fountain) compete with Hodgman’s colleagues in the office of Vanity Fair. . . . This is a portrait of a woman in decline, but still very much alive and committed to getting the lion’s share of mini-Snickers at every opportunity. When things are left unsaid between parents and children, it leaves a hurt that can never be completely repaired, but love and dedication can make those scarred places into works of art. Bettyville is one such masterpiece.” —BookPage“The book is instantly engaging, as Hodgman has a wry sense of humor, one he uses to keep others at a distance. Yet the book is also devastatingly touching. Betty is one tough cookie, and she is crumbling. Hodgman as a young man came out around the same time AIDS did, complicating his already complicated feelings immeasurably. There’s a lot for Hodgman to handle, yet he does, despite the urge to give in to his own sadness and his own former drug addiction. A tender, resolute look at a place, literal and figurative, baby boomers might find themselves.” —Booklist “Bettyville is a gorgeous memoir. I was completely engaged, not just because of George Hodgman’s great ear and his sense of timing, but because he delivers Betty to us in such a manner that she steps off the page . I felt transported to a better place, to a time period and a web of relationships with which we can all identify,  no matter where we grew up. Beyond the humor and the pathos, the quotidian and the bizarre, there remain profound lessons about life and love that I will carry away.” —Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone “George Hodgman achieves something stunning with this book—by paying such deep, loving attention to his mother’s (admittedly colorful) life, he offers us the chance to pay close attention to our own strange and beautiful Bettyvilles, which in the end is all we can ask of any art. This bejeweled pillbox is rich and funny and heartwrenching and might just you cure you of your ills; if those ills include loneliness or feeling like you don’t belong—you are not alone.” —Nick Flynn, author of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City “One of the great benefits of reading memoir is that it offers the reader more people to love. I love Betty, and I love George Hodgman, whose beautiful book this is. Read Bettyville. Laugh, weep, and be grateful.” —Abigail Thomas, author of A Three Dog Life “Bettyville reminded me of some Homeric legend, complete with treacherous chimeras and ravenous gorgons, except that it is told with such grace, wit, and spirited generosity that you hardly sense you are on a fragile bark, adrift on a perilous sea. This story of a sensitive Midwestern boy coming to terms with his homosexuality, his drug addiction, his clueless parents, his all-out war with shame, is nothing short of epic. It begins as a simple trip home from fast-track Manhattan to Paris, Missouri, to care for a failing mother, but by the time we are through, we have descended to an underworld, witnessed a plague, traveled all nine circles of hell, and emerged exhilarated by the grit and valor of our remarkable guide. It is, in every sense, a tale about the power of love.” —Marie Arana, author of American Chica “With great tenderness, honesty, and a searing, sardonic humor, George Hodgman has written a love letter to his mother, at once a penance and a tribute.  In doing so, he has given us Betty, a character for the ages. This is a beautiful, illuminating book.” —Dani Shapiro, author of Devotion “When I read the first few pages of Bettyville, I immediately connected. The detail is poetry and, yes, George Hodgman tells a story that is all our stories if we grow up different, struggling not to hurt those we treasure. But what I will most remember is the human struggle of Betty—the woman at the window, the woman at the piano, the woman whose desire to help others represents the best of small-town America. The silence she was taught and the complications of our parents’ journeys to be there for us, as best they could, is what I will take away from Bettyville, where she will always reside. Hers is the quiet love that outlasts the distances and lets us survive.” —Richard Blanco, United States inaugural poet, author of The Prince of los Cucuyos: A Miami Childhood

It looks like you'll be enthused or underwhelmed, and I'm with the 1/3 of the reviewers who are underwhelmed. In fact, after hearing so many good things, I was disappointed. Certainly it jumps around from theme to theme, but that didn't bother me as it does some other reviewers. It simply wasn't compelling; the treatment of being gay in the 1980s, dealing with the dementia of a parent, coming home to a declining middle America -- all good topics, but none treated with the incisiveness and specialness I expected in a book so highly regarded by so many. On the plus side, the author is very clever and very witty; many lines are very special, and I laughed out loud a number of times, which I'm not induced to do easily. For a native Missourian (I'm a Missourian but not a native), the descriptions (albeit with some liberties) of real places and times will be special to you (so my fellow book clubbers tell me). So, go ahead and read it -- it's a quick read, and the humor is worth it. Just don't expect so much, and if you start with that mindset, you might feel like its a 4-star or 5-star read.

I'm a hard sell. When someone tells me a book is funny, I invariably wind up wondering why s/he found it funny -- because I definitely did not. I tend to ignore most reviews of books (or movies), preferring to decide for myself on the merits, or lack of them in a given piece of work. That said, I chose to review Bettyville because I was actually intrigued by the cover--the very reason we've always been told not to judge a book. But the photograph had an authentic feel to it that rang a small bell for me. So I got the book. And I truly loved it. I loved George Hodgman and his mother; his father, too.Hodgman's great gift is to present the connective tissue between reader and writer, the thoughts and feelings and events that knit us together in a manner achieved only by the most profoundly truthful and deeply felt telling of lives lived. In spite of our obvious differences (male/female, straight/gay, etc) Hodgman's feelings mirror my own in too many ways to enumerate. He made me laugh repeatedly; he moved me often. I felt his irritation, his anger with himself, and his good-hearted impulses toward others. I knew him because he reveals himself so completely, so courageously, so hilariously. For example: "Just a typical American family, torn between love and homicide, but united in our own way." One just has to laugh at something so absolutely true. This book deserves recognition and accolades. Read it and feel your heart open and then constrict, then open again. The parent in me wants to adopt the little boy in George. The child in me wants to be friends with that lonely boy whose isolation feels remembered to me. And the sister in me wants to help George prepare some treats for Betty, and then persuade her to put on her comfy old wrecked sandals so that we can all go out for a nice, easy walk.

"Bettyville reminded me of some Homeric legend, complete with treacherous chimeras and ravenous gorgons, except that it is told with such grace, wit, and spirited generosity that you hardly sense you are on a fragile bark, adrift on a perilous sea."Wow! Writers kill for reviews like this. George Hodgman has my admiration for completing and publishing "Bettyville," and I feel bad because I wasn't as moved by it as others were, both here and in the media. I liked reading about George and Betty and sure it might have rambled a bit here and there, but I thought it was good. A little long, but good. I wondered why there was no real resolution to the tension that builds as we all worry about "What's gonna happen to Betty?" George doesn't take us there. I suppose that's not necessarily a bad thing.I think George has tapped into a new vein of literature -- Baby Boomers coming home to take care of Mom and Dad in their last years. I've been through it, along with millions of others, and there is a comfort in knowing others are coping with the same issues and events.I guess I felt like there was an overarching sadness about George not being able to be who he truly is with his folks. I understand why. He didn't want to disappoint them. But still . . .George didn't have "the talk" with Betty. But he did get her to say "You could do worse" about the doctor. And that's something right there.

The Asshole Survival Guide: How to Deal with People Who Treat You Like Dirt, by Robert I. Sutton

Review

"This survival guide is here to help keep you from going insane. It’s full of science-driven tips and strategies on how to deal with nasty bosses, manipulative colleagues, or other general jerks in your life." — W Magazine"People are jerks. And there’s plenty of evidence to prove it in the very blunt self-help book called “The A—hole Survival Guide,” a scholarly source that teaches fed-up readers how to deal with co-workers, strangers and just about anyone who sucks." —Moneyish"Sutton offers a variety of techniques that people suffering the presence of difficult individuals at their work, in their sports teams or just in everyday life can employ to deal with them or fight back. . . This is a small book but it could play a big part in making us treat others better." —Forbes "If everyone had paid attention to the Stanford business professor's best-selling 2007 management manifesto, "The No Asshole Rule," there would be no need for a follow-up. Yet here we are." —Esquire The crowded genre of workplace bullying books features clever titles...the best of the authors in the category is Stanford Professor Robert Sutton, who published The No Asshole Rule a decade ago and returns now with a more fully developed plan of action." —The National Book Review "Sutton’s breezy writing style, combined with the wide array of anecdotes and stories from people who’ve written him about their difficulties, makes for an entertaining read...consider that the physical book itself might be a solution to an a-hole at work. Much like the effect Sutton’s first book reportedly has had, simply leaving The Asshole Survival Guide prominently on your desk may send all the signal you need." —SmartUp “In this most-welcome sequel to Sutton’s bestselling The No Asshole Rule, the author turns from an organization-wide perspective to an individual one, outlining strategies for dealing with difficult people at work.” —Publishers Weekly “Bob Sutton is very wise and very funny, AND he can tell you exactly how to handle the unfortunate reality that into every life a few assholes must fall. THE ASSHOLE SURVIVAL GUIDE is destined to become your go-to resource whenever you find yourself dealing with people who would treat you poorly.” —Susan Cain, New York Times bestselling author of QUIET   “At last someone has provided clear steps for rejecting, deflecting, and deflating the jerks who blight our lives.  Better still, that someone is the great Bob Sutton, which ensures that the information is useful, evidence-based, and fun to read.” —Robert Cialdini, author of New York Times bestsellers INFLUENCE and PRE-SUASION  “No matter what industry or profession you work in, you will always encounter people who are unpleasant, off-putting, or downright self-centered.  Thank goodness Bob Sutton has provided us with such a well-crafted guide for surviving these jerks.  It is mandatory reading for anyone who strives to endure, escape, fend-off, and bring them down.” —Chip Conley, founder and past CEO of Joie de Vivre hotels, advisor and former Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy at Airbnb, author of four books including the New York Times best seller Emotional Equations.     “With humor, understanding and comprehensive research – and an ah-ha moment on every page – this is a must-have for leaders and climbing stars alike, from the expert on the subject. Bravo!” —Marshall Goldsmith, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller TRIGGERS   “This is the guide you need for handling the worst people in your life—and making sure they don’t rub off on you.  If you’ve ever had a horrible boss, client, or colleague, this book is bursting with advice that’s often ingenious and always actionable.  And if your world has been free of jerks, consider this an insurance policy.” —Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of GIVE AND TAKE and ORIGINALS, and coauthor of OPTION B    “Assholes are like the weather—everybody complains about them but nobody ever does anything about them. Until, that is, Robert Sutton’s Asshole Survival Guide. Sutton offers a wealth of helpful, and dare I say wise suggestions about how to identify and deal with the assholes in your organization, or at least minimize the damage they do to the well-being and productivity of others. (I’d also suggest bringing it along to family reunions and PTA meetings.)” —Geoff Nunberg, University of California at Berkeley, author of Ascent of the A-Word: Assholism, the First Sixty Years.   "One of the biggest impediments to achieving a great workplace is assholes. Their behavior creates a hostile work environment that leads to decreased engagement, productivity and employee loyalty. Bob Sutton has written a fantastic book that explains the severity of the problem and provides useful strategies for dealing with it.” —Paul Purcell, Chairman and former long-time CEO of Baird, ranked fourth on Fortune’s Top 100 Companies to Work For and renowned for its long-time “no assholes” policy.   "Reading the Asshole Survival Guide made me wistful. If only Bob Sutton's book had been available to help me deal with the full complement of 1st-class assholes I've encountered in my 50-year professional life. No names shall be mentioned." —Tom Peters, co-author of the bestseller IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE   "First, The No Asshole Rule alerted us to the problem. Now, The Asshole Survival Guide offers the solution. This book is a contemporary classic—a shrewd and spirited guide to reducing our exposure and protecting ourselves from the jerks, bullies, tyrants, and trolls who seek to dispirit and demean. Now more than ever, with civility and decency under attack, we desperately need this antidote to the a-holes in our midst.” —Daniel H. Pink, bestselling author of To Sell is Human and Drive   "As much as we try to avoid assholes, inevitably they appear in our lives. Bob Sutton gives us a menu of clear, thoughtful, and practical solutions for surviving and thriving in those painful situations. With cutting-edge research and real-life examples that are thought-provoking and often hilarious, The Asshole Survival Guide is an indispensable resource.” —Gretchen Rubin, bestselling author of THE HAPPINESS PROJECT and BETTER THAN BEFORE   "It's hard to know how to react to a jerk, so The Asshole Survival Guide is a Godsend. Obnoxious behavior is a double whammy. First, you feel mad at the other person. Next, you feel mad at yourself for your response / lack of response. It's being mad at yourself that is both hard to be aware of, and is most debilitating. With this brilliant and funny book, Bob Sutton saves you from fear, loathing, and self-loathing!" —Kim Scott, bestselling author of the New York Times bestseller, Radical Candor, cofounder of Candor, Inc, former executive at Google and Apple

I’m going to avoid spelling out the A word as I write this. The book is a great read. You don’t need to have read the “No A rule” to get value out of “The A Survival Guide.” There are a plethora of real world examples and tips. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on “A Avoidance Techniques” and “Mind Tricks That Protect Your Soul.” A’s could be prevalent throughout an organization. In fact, there may be one right behind you! How you deal with these people depend on where there are and how high up or down they are in the company. You have to strategize and work with your peers, accordingly. Sutton takes care to explain how being an A isn’t necessarily a permanent condition. Be cognizant of this. Don’t go Defcon 5 immediately if dealing with an A.I liked Sutton’s observation that just distancing yourself from an A, even by 10 or 20 feet, can help reduce the toxicity of the atmosphere surrounding As. Becoming an A can be contagious. You don’t have to read the book cover to cover in one sitting, and there are times you’ll find it a great reference tool Be careful about making the book highly visible in your workspace. You don’t know when an A will wander by. Some thoughts not in the book but still important – (1) If in a meeting, you don’t recognize the A in the room, you may be the A. (2) Some music to hum if you need to tune out an A, from Willie Nelson – “Momma don’t let your babies grow up to be As…”

If I had read this book early in my career, I would be half an inch taller and a lot richer. I once had a boss who was so belittling that while I worked for him I literally shrunk half an inch. I finally got so angry that I quit, walking away from lots of stock options. We've all had people we work with who make us absolutely miserable. In this great book, Bob gives you lots of coping strategies. You don't have to let anyone "make" you feel something; you get to choose your reaction, and Bob shows you how.

With The Asshole Survival Guide, Bob Sutton cements his reputation as the savior of long-suffering employees everywhere. When he published The No Asshole Rule in 2007, he exhorted leaders and managers to create civil workplaces by setting standards for decent behavior. And serving as examples, themselves, of how to treat the human beings who spend most of their waking hours in those workplaces.Sadly, too few managers followed Sutton’s entirely sensible, research-based advice – maybe because most readers of the book were the employees who suffered daily the slings and arrows of the jerks around them. Fortunately for all of us, those readers have inundated Sutton ever since with pleas for help, filling his inbox and bending his ear with thousands of juicy tales from the front lines of asshole-land – the land where motivation droops, productivity stalls, creativity fizzles, and despair reigns. At last, Sutton has created what these readers begged for: a compelling account of the best of these tales, across a stunning variety of work and personal situations, along with research-based and experience-tested methods for identifying, avoiding, neutralizing, or – if all else fails – escaping the mushroom cloud of negativity with which jerks befoul the world around them. We all owe a debt of gratitude for this important work to Bob Sutton – a nice person who, alas, will forever be known as The Asshole Guy.- Teresa Amabile, Professor at Harvard Business School & Coauthor of The Progress Principle

As a follow up to the original No *** Rule, this is a fun read full of real life anecdotes. Bob weaves together a terrific toolkit for anyone suffering with a colleague or boss who treats other people badly. It's kind of amazing to read the stories he has collected over the years and then see how his toolkit helps navigate very tricky situations. I love his energy, pacing, and most of all his optimism -- something can be done to make things better! A+.

We've all worked for folks like this. Heck, I currently do and, every time it has happened, I have either moved on to a new company (and the person that harassed me and other employees was either forced out of fired once the company figured out what was happening or once his/her usefulness was spent--forcing people to leave so a company doesn't have to pay a severance package as part of layoffs or get hit for unemployment later). These are the people that, sadly, corporate America depends on to keep companies running by shedding valuable employees.Interestingly, the book gives us solid advice on how to either work, ignore or move beyond these bozos either before they hope on the bus to their next destructive pathway or preventing them from victimizing you in the process. This book has been particularly helpful with my current company which has targeted employees over a certain age and salary range for harassment and it has provided sage advice for me to give to others that are experiencing being displaced from their current position and, possibly, preventing that from happening (particularly if higher management may not realize this might be happening from other co-workers or supervisors). If you read this book and recognize yourself, perhaps, it will provide an agent for change. Either way, this book will reassure you that you are not imagining being subjected to harassment and give you key strategies to help you survive in that environment until change comes or you decide to leave. It will help you keep your emotional health as well.Highly recommended.

This book is a must have for anyone navigating today's world. Whether you are in professional or social situation, you are likely to come across people who are difficult to interact (let alone work) with. This book synthesizes hundreds of peer reviewed studies and countless real world examples in an engaging and easy to read format. Bob shares a variety of strategies for dealing with many different "types" of unpleasant people and answers the questions many people are too shy or scared to ask. There is no better time to read this book.

I loved the book and finished it in one sitting. While the topic is analytical in nature, Joe's style is conversant and very easy to read and digest. This book is a great reference guide that should be within arms-length for viewers of the 2019 Masters and other Tour events. Anyone who follows golf - whether in-depth or just the Majors - should read the book. Note - I immediately wanted to take out the clubs and analyze my personal Strokes Gained (Lost!) components, but I will need to just wait until spring and summer arrives in Chicago.

My high school golfer/baseball player doesn't like to read in general, but he has found this book fascinating! He loves math & the analytics of sports so Joe Peta has written a book that speaks to his interests. He loves it so much, he now wants to read Joe's first book about baseball. If only there could be more books like this!

I really enjoyed this book. The Stroke Gained data is a very useful fool for PGA bettors. Sports Analytic is the wave of the future. The numbers do not lie. I love this book a lot and I will refer this book to my golf betting friends. Do not worry about the math, Joe explained Stroke Gained in a simple way for the normal person.

He makes a sound argument for handicapping golf pros. The Strokes Gained is the best way forward but over 4 rounds it is still Strokes Gained putting that will have the biggest impact.

I’m not a golf guy, but I loved Joe Peta’s book on golf analytics. Great place for a beginner to golf or data to begin.

Very quality content...exhaustive research went in to this book. Looking forward to reading more books like this from Peta. Lots of info.

Everything Peta writes is a must-read. 11/10.

Professors panned this book (even though none of them read but I have read it twice and must commend Sanders for his research and very thoughtful analysis. Whether you agree or not, it will make you think and it will educate you on Jewish thought at the time of Paul.

Sanders's work is a must read for anyone interested in Pauline studies. While I appreciate his work, I do not agree with his covenantal nomism. I think the forensic approach is much better.

As with all sequels, I was highly skeptical it would live up to the first movie. I assure you it does.

Probably the best book on Paul, a very complex character, otherwise just read his letters.

A must classic for those people who want to understand the background of the people who wrote about Jesus of the Bible. A lot of meat to chew but well worth the effort.

Excellent research, fine writing, and easy to follow the premise and minor premises! I highly recommend this work. It is a terrific research tool.

I appreciate Sanders branching out from traditional thought on Paul even if I do not agree with all of his arguments. I agree that Paul's belief was one of participationist eschatology (Paul also believed the end was near): the only way to become one of the People of God was through faith in Christ ("dying to Christ") and the old covenant was no longer sufficient. I agree that Paul had a connection to Judaism but, I do not agree with Sanders keeping with the ideal that Paul was a Pharisee just because Paul says so (he doesn't provide support for this). I found his `covenantal nomism' interesting but, I would like to do some more research on the subject.Sanders' does touch on Paul's break from the Jewish religion and his Hellenistic ideals which was helpful in the quest to understanding Paul.

good to find this book.

I don't know why I decided to buy this book. I never particularly liked Geithner or his policies, and I've already read several good books about the financial meltdown of 2007-2008. However, I did end up picking it up and reading it, and I'm glad I did.To my surprise, Geithner comes across as very likable. Of course, likability is not a critical characteristic for a great Treasury Secretary. However, it's a necessary and maybe even a critical characteristic if you're going to read a 500-page book by a Treasury Secretary; had I found him obnoxious, I doubt I would have finished this (and you can see my review of "Duty" by Robert Gates for proof of that). Geithner comes across as extremely intelligent but not at all a "peacock," to use one of his words. He readily admits that he screwed up in many ways, and he makes no bones about his failings. At the same time, he takes us through the panics (his own and that of the economy) and his approach to his responsibilities, and he seems to be, well, human. The book is also not even remotely snarky. He is candid in expressing his views of a number of other key players in dealing with the meltdown, and he's not always complimentary. However, his views are policy-based rather than personal, and he doesn't shy away from giving credit where credit is due to people he's not fond of from a policy point of view.I also learned a lot about the financial crisis that I didn't learn from the other books I've read. Much of that new knowledge is the "inside story" that Geithner tells, of course, but it's an interesting and important story, and I found him more or less persuasive. My comment about the sausage-making is the only negative. In order to tell the inside story he feels he must tell (and I can't really blame him for wanting to tell it), he gives lots and lots of detail about various financial institutions' failures and rescues and many details of how the policies (i.e., the sausage) was made. IMHO, these lengthy discussions could have been edited a bit more judiciously, and doing so would have made the book more readable (not that it's unreadable - it's just long and rather too detailed). However, while I've deducted one star to reflect this view, I believe this is a worthy book and, in fact, a worthy man.

This book is user friendly, well written and well thought out. It shows that Obama chose his Secretary of the Treasury very wisely. The detail is amazing, but not in the least boring. It reads like a novel. Geithner was the exact right man for the job, already skilled and savvy in the knowledge of how to go about rescuing nations from economic crisis. This is well worth the read and impressive. Geithner emerges as a very likable and admirable human being, who just happened to be in the right time and place to save us from Depression 2.0.

The Great Recession and financial panic of 2007-2009 has a lot of myths and stories surrounding it concerning what the government did or didn't do, what it should've done and shouldn't have done, and the motives of those working behind the scenes. Former Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner is one of those lighting rod figures from the crisis who, because of his relative anonymity prior to the crisis, is often misunderstood or caricatured. In this book, Sec. Geithner not only dispels the myths about his own background, but also provides a unique insight and perspective on the panic from one of the only two people in high government who was there from beginning to end (Fed chairman Ben Bernanke being the other one). But his story, and his experiences with financial panics, doesn't start in 2007, but rather starts with his upbringing in a family that was involved in international development and finances from when he was very young, always moving from one country to another and spending very little time in America. From there, it moves on to his time as a civil servant in the Treasury department's international wing, dealing with the crises brought on the by the Asian financial panics of the 1990s and eventual rising to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in charge of the international branch. From those times Mr. Geithner picks up a lot of invaluable experience in financial panics, what makes them better, and what makes them worse. From there he makes the surprising leap to head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the most powerful of the regional Federal Reserve Boards in the country. And that is where the main story begins as Mr. Geithner describes the events that led to the panic, the actions he took as FRBNY chair and then Treasury Secretary, why they took them, and why they were necessary even if they were both unpopular and counterintuitive. The book reaches its climax with the stress tests backed by promises of capital injections for those banks the tests deemed were in need of them. Once the results of the test are released in the spring of 2009 a certain measure of calm enters the markets and the last chapters feel like a denouement as he deals with the Eurozone crisis and the toxic politics of Washington following the ascendancy of the Tea Party in 2010. What is surprising is how in the first half of the book Mr. Geithner seems to undersell himself, not out of a sense of humility, but because he genuinely seemed to believe that there were other people better or more knowledgeable than him. From my perspective, it seems like a no-brainer that Pres. Obama tapped him to be Treasury Secretary, even if he was a terrible salesman (a flaw that he readily, even jokingly, admits to being). What is also great about this book is how much value it has beyond being another account of the financial crisis. He does a great job of explaining why the unpopular decisions the Fed, the FDIC, and the Treasury took were necessary to save the economy, even if he falls into the trap of using too much of the jargon of Wall St. to explain it. I believe this book has value not only as an account of this financial crisis, but as a guide to how to handle future financial, indeed any, crisis in the future. As Mr. Geithner is fond of saying, a plan beats no plan. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the true story behind the financial crisis and the Great Recession of 2007-2009.

Overall I really liked this book. While Tim Geithner is not an writer and his style is definitely not of a thriller, the portrait of the crisis from his view definitely contributes to the overall understanding of the financial crisis of 2008.This book should not be taken as "stand-alone" but read in the context of all the other ones out there about the crisis itself. It helps one to form their opinions in a clear and more fair way in my opinion. Finally, this book also help show that the work of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and other institutions that prevented the crisis relied on countless individuals who never get recognized for their hard work and countless hours helping make this country better. My admiration and gratitude only got bigger after reading this account.
