About the Author

Dr. Donald R. Askeland joined the University of Missouri-Rolla (now the Missouri University of Science and Technology) in 1970 after obtaining his doctorate in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Michigan. His primary interest is teaching, which has resulted in a variety of campus, university, and industry awards and the development of THE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING OF MATERIALS textbook. Dr. Askeland is also active in research involving metals casting and metals joining, particularly in the production, treatment, and joining of cast irons, gating and fluidity of aluminum alloys, and optimization of casting processes. Additional work has concentrated on lost foam casting, permanent mold casting, and investment casting. Much of this work is interdisciplinary, providing data for creating computer models and validation of such models.

Since I am a layperson and a non-scientist, this book took me several weeks to read. It was well worth the time. Professor Kaku addresses issues in cosmology thoroughly but with great clarity. Each chapter drew me further into pondering the origins of the universe, the possible existence of parallel universes, and the issues raised by these reflections about the future of humanity. As a Christian, I especially appreciated his reflections about the meaning of life and his unbiased and inclusive thoughts about the relevance of religion to cosmology. Highly recommended.

One of my favorite books. I'm hardly the science-type, but I've gotten sucked into Physics (study of matter) as a kind of hobby. Michio Kaku takes his readers on an entertaining yet enlightening tour of string theory. This is the theory that the smallest material particle in the universe is not a point in space but a string, and how that string vibrates determines the element. Changing the vibration results in a different element. Dr Kaku is not afraid of heretical questions, asking "If the universe is a symphony of strings, then is there a Composer?" In his chapter "A Designer Universe?" he acknowledges the evidence for a Creator and explains his disinclination to believe. Likely Dr Kaku doesn't know or doesn't care that the Bible includes stories of, and references to, and promises of parallel worlds.Dr Kaku has self-promoting tendencies, as his critics rightly claim. But his desire to gain an audience enriches his explanatory skills. He has mastered the ability to present scientific theory in a manner unscientific audiences can understand, yet without talking down to us. This is a skill other Physics authors--Lisa Randall "Warped Passages", Heinerich Pas "The Perfect Wave"--never quite master. (Both books well worth reading.) If you're a Physics hobbyist like myself, or simply enjoy thinking in new ways, "Parallel Worlds" is a great launch pad into current thinking about reality. ~Star Readers: from out of the east

An incredible amount of information packed into this small book. I read bits and pieces at will based on my interests, for example scientific views on free will and determinism. It is written in laymen's language and one doesn't need to be a scientist to understand. Michio Kaku's views about future reality come from quantum theory micro world, and seem very surreal and bizarre . Very interesting.

This book was a fun trip. The beginning and ending are a little mathematics heavy, but Ivery much enjoyed the mind boggling concepts. It's definitely one you couldread several times. I had a lot of fun thought provoking conversations thanks tothis book.

A great journey into the parallel universes as predicted by the M-string physics theory. Are we alone?, Do we have parallel realities? What creates our choice?, Do all things exists independent of our observation?. Although it is a pop-science book, not extrictly a philosophy book, it brings several trascendental questions to our minds: What is the purpose of the universe?. As all Kaku's books, very pleasant to read it.

Michio Kaku is one of the most significant theoretical physicists of our day, and this is his signature work. Besides providing a basic history of astrophysics knowledge and concepts, Dr. Kaku discusses the possibility of parallel universes, multiple dimensions, and even time travel. Our universe may in fact be an offshoot of another universe, possibly from a (theoretical) white hole. Once regarded as science fiction, many of the concepts Dr. Kaku discusses in this book are increasingly becoming accepted by scientists as plausible facts.Most of this book will be easily understandable for the average lay person. However, much of the book is spent on string theory. If you don't have at least some education in college level physics, some of this may be difficult to understand (not to mention a little dry). That said, Dr. Kaku does a better job than most in explaining in. All in all, this is an important book explaining some of the most cutting edge theories and concepts in modern physics. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in astronomy or astrophysics.

The book covers a huge amount of material in very little detail; a topic gets a page or two, then it's off to the next topic. I found some great one sentence summaries that pulled ideas from other books together for me, but there was little detail leading up to the sentence, and no detail leading on from there. I wanted to learn about string theory, but I found thousands of sorta related facts and claims about the universe that got wearying after 100 pages.

If you're interested in quantum theory, and multiple worlds ideas, this is a pretty informative and interesting read. Michio Kaku is clever and engaging to read, but I will admit that this book took me some long periods of 'picking up and putting down' to get through. The material is not simple, but it is presented in relateable ways for the most part. Good stuff.

I thought in purchasing this book I would have all I needed for class however the lab and the sound byte access is not a part of the package. you will still need to purchase it separately. Check with your school and see if they give you access with their purchase. once you have downloaded the book you are caught. As it stand I had to go back and order the book from my school which has the access. so I am out the 109.00 for this book plus taxes and I had to purchase the package at my school UGH!! don't buy

I'm a school social worker at a juvenile detention center, and I commonly bring books (usually high quality YA Lit) for the kids to read when they are not in school. Many of our kids are not great students and few were readers before they came here, but many kids read for pleasure now. Last year alone, well over 30 kids read "The Hate U Give" and many were eagerly awaiting "On the Come Up." When I brought it to school last week, many of the kids' faces absolutely lit up, and they are now engrossed in the novel. When I arrived today, one of the kids told me he was done and asked for "another Angie Thomas book." I laughed and explained he's already read them, so I'd have to bring him something else.In any case, it is another fantastic, relatable book, especially for the kids I have here at the JDC. They can relate to the themes, characters, and experiences, as most have grown up in complicated family systems and in communities not dissimilar from Garden Heights. Thomas is a great writer, and with "On The Come Up," I think she captured the language (her characters sound like my kids--even more so than in THUG). Well done, and we'll be eagerly waiting her third novel.

I actually liked this book a lot better than The Hate You Give. The Hate You Give was an important book, but there were a lot of unnecessary scenes and even unnecessary characters. The pacing was slow at times, and the story seemed to drag on. I still liked that book, but it wasn't my favorite.This book shows the author's growth. The charactes are all gripping and there is not a dull moment. I read the book in two days. The message of the story will stick with you. This is definately worth the read and one I will probably return to in the near future.

Reading this young-adult novel, I realized that -- likely since I'm now much older and a bit more jaded -- I'm not as prone to simply assume (as did some characters in this story) that hip-hop incites violence. Granted, I'm not an ardent fan of that music genre. Yet I'm more willing to see it as poetry addressing social injustices and real-life inner turmoil. The story called to my mind how such lyrics may be disquieting to mindsets in the U.S. that are more suburban, conservative, and (if I may phrase it so) colonialist.Here, high-school student Bri's passion to perform is tested by the pressures of her deceased dad's rap legacy, as well as the music industry's own demands (along with its misogynistic attitudes), and Bri's own preparations for college entrance exams. As the story progresses, Bri's lyrics vent against campus racism. But will this result in her music being censored, and her being virtually labeled a hoodlum? More urgently, will a music career prove a ticket for her family to escape compounding financial hardships?While I more strongly favor the author's first novel, don't misunderstand -- this book, too, turned out enjoyable for me. The ending here may have seemed a bit ideal, but true to life, not all turned out rosy for everyone. I felt grateful to get acquainted with Bri's family and each of her closest peers. I grinned at some lyrical "sick burns" and I laughed seeing how gossip was prized at the church that Bri's family attended. I welcomed the implied ties to "The Hate U Give" and even a nod to a certain Becky Albertalli novel.

Fantastic. I’m not gushing, but it’s really, very good.Bri is, as she says, brilliant, and as a character, one of the most unique and complex I’ve ever read. She’s tough and vulnerable, talented and sensitive, yet hot-headed. I love her voice, and being taken on the ride of her confusion feels genuine and was so much fun.I love how Thomas doesn’t shy away from so many social lessons with this novel, more so than with THUG. Gun violence, racial stereotypes, welfare, systemic poverty, drug abuse, drug distribution, police brutality, and so much more are all discussed while also weaving in a bit of romance and the right amount of family drama.This is a fast-paced read and I really want Trey to be my big brother, too. I just felt like it wasn’t as tight as I’d like it to be, and the pacing was off at times. Minor issue.An incredible story. My kids will love it.

Fans of THUG can rest easy knowing that this one is no sophomore slump. I am curious about the audio book now because I just feel like the scenes with Bri's songs would be FABULOUS on audio. I loved how the story takes place in the same neighborhood as THUG because it felt so familiar going back into it. I appreciated Bri's struggle with figuring out who she is and the way Angie Thomas so brilliantly writes that struggle - of what people expect you to be and who you truly are. So so well done.

I enjoyed this novel. IAngie Thomas is an exciting writer. I don't know a lot about hip hop and reading this sent me googling and youtubing. I think it would be great reading for teens. There is a lot of profanity but that is the way teens talk. I hopr people don't let prudishness and rigidity stop them from taking in the message that this novel delivers or stop them from allowing young people to experiencing the novel. The messages regarding education, family, religion, knowing who you are and surviving are powerful. I am over 60, a Motown kid of the 70s and I found this novel upl iiftig and positive.

Angie has done it again! This book was incredible and captivating from the moment I opened it. She tackles her stories with so much heart and authenticity that her characters are more alive than some people I know in real life. One of my favorite things about her writing is how developed the adult characters are—and On the Come Up is no exception. I feel like YA usually doesn’t do parents or adults justice or craft them realistically. But each person no matter what age was just as developed and real as the main character. The voice is strong, the plot was mesmerizing—-everything about this book is a must read. Angie is the most talented author I’ve read in years!

I use this product mainly for the monthly overview. I dont like the weekly spending charts, as I dont need to want to use my time to tract that. SO I white out the days and instead list my accounts and periodically update the balance and plan for bigger purchases. I wish it laid flat and came with tabs to move quickly between months.

It was not as described , I get one every year but this one stated it was monthly but it’s weekly and I don’t need a weekly planner

I loved the style of this book although it's not for those who are easily shocked. It really puts you at ease an encourages you to share/talk about sex and then try things. It has taken things up a noch for us already :)

Let me just start by saying thank you to Ms. Porter. I believe everyone should read this book, everyone! She explains with her personal banter and experiences, the real truth about oral sex! She and Susan Harper PhD combined real research with personal experiences. The way this book is written makes for a great read and a book you can return to for useful information. Who doesn’t want to give or receive amazing oral sex? This book is a wonderful guide to the truth of being a giver and a receiver and I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone.

I wish I had this when I was a lot younger. Its easy to understand and it's not stiff, excuse the pun. Its even quite funny. Everyone should read this except maybe gay men! Seriously. I thought the gender language might be a bit strange, but it wasn't. It was actually very natural and has made me think about gender in a different way and how to be more considerate. Something else that might have been useful when I was younger. Highly recommend!
