I never say things like that but I am a trans woman, an older white lesbian in Brooklyn, and although Vivek Shraya's life differs in many ways from mine, I've underlined almost everything on the first page. I have to stop or I'll just mark up the whole book. You should read this book, it's not long and you'll learn things. Tegan and Sara said so, too.

This book is a gift. Beautifully written, tender, vulnerable, and honest. “I’m Afraid of Men” asks the reader to look in the mirror and reevaluate the way we ourselves interact with gender in our own lives and the way we treat others. This is a valuable and important work. Everyone should read it.

Vivek Shraya's I'm Afraid of Men is a short book, but it was a challenging one for me to read. It is very much a trauma narrative, and as a non-binary person who has experienced significant traumas and spent several years in therapy working through them, I found it incredibly painful to enter her frame of mind. Often when I read trans life writing, I feel less alone. This book, on the other hand, left me feeling as alienated and isolated and unacceptable and on edge as I did years ago.Shraya is a strong woman who has survived and accomplished many remarkable things. From this book, it doesn't seem like she acknowledges her own resilience. I hope she can find some peace someday.

Why? Because Vivek Shraya bares her soul-- as she writes with a soul searing intensity, delicacy, sensitivity, and beauty. This book is totally UNLIKE any other of the (sterling! excellent as well) books on being Gay or being on the Binary or being Trans, because Vivek Shraya incorporates the reader into her incredible journey of self-realization, doubt, fear, the agony of trying to "fit in" while all the while fueling her life and development with positive (and at times hesitant or self doubting) determination and love. Vivek has a very logical head on her shoulders, and when she writes about being cheated on.... it brought back my memories but opened my eyes -- her words educated me on the power of logical forgiveness.Although this book does not really mirror my self-development in personal matters of gender, it does open up a incredibly abstruse, emotional and logical world where I can truly say "Thank you Vivek for enlightening me!" Her musings on the abysmal way we diminish and desecrate the feminine -- and the need to return of the goddess and (for both genders) to be respectful of space and the sacredness of the land we inhabit is a gentle eye-opener. There is MUCH to learn from this small but mighty book.By the Way -- Vivek's Music is BEAUTIFUL.

This is Shraya’s statement of what her experiences of dealing with men have been like. As a trans woman, she has, as the song says, ‘looked at life from both sides now’. As a boy, she was encouraged to be more male. She did body building, lowered her voice, and mimicked the walk of masculine men. She gave up color in her wardrobe, sticking to dark neutrals. Later in life she gave up trying to be what she was not, and started expressing her femininity. Now, instead of being harassed for not being masculine enough, she gets harassed for not being feminine enough. The world- and men in particular- just cannot deal with people like her. The majority of men (and women) want women and men to be firmly at the poles of the male/female spectrum, and so find themselves uncomfortable- and sometimes violent- in the presence of a trans or gender fluid person. This is an essential book for the 21st century, as we learn to view the world as non-binary.

I've not forgotten the jolt of pleasure I discovered in reading Jennifer Finney Boylan's memoir SHE'S NOT THERE on a plane ride from Vancouver to Toronto in 2003 when the book was published. The euphoria of reading the story of a modern trans life—encompassing everything that a trans life can contain in the 21st century—rendered so beautifully in prose was a joyful experience for me as a reader.The title of her book may be I'M AFRAID OF MEN, but this is the work of a fearless author who is not afraid to expose herself on the page, on her own terms. It's also a warm and generous invitation to everyone, regardless of their gender identity or expression, to truly learn something new, and to open their minds and hearts to the marvellously complex realities of what gender can mean.The fact that the book has been so well received internationally, including by people who were perhaps not the initial target audience, is a testament to Shraya's courage, as well as her prodigious literary gifts. It's a slim volume, not much longer than some poetry books, but every word is golden. This was a very fast read for me. Did read "The Year of Magical Thinking" right after my own husband past away and I found it helpful and comforting. This book is her memories of her daughter who passed away not long after her husband. I've read some negative reviews about Joan Didion name dropping and it's all about her. Well, if you are looking for a "biography" of her daughter, this is not it. For me, the book is about yearning for those we have lost and as she wrote, what we have left to lose. Of trying to remember the good and if wishing could bring them back, that's what we would do. Joan Didion is a famous author, so she has a lot of equally famous friends, so sue her. I didn't think of this as name dropping, she's mentioning her friends in connection with certain life events. As for being about her, since she is writing about the memories of her daughter and about aging, about her deep need and yearning for her daughter, then yes it is about her. When you are grieving, it is about you, your loss, your future, going on without those you love. I found that the book did make me sad, but as someone told me, I can give myself permission to be sad as opposed to what I usually do, which is burying the sadness. If you enjoy Ms. Didion's work, you will enjoy this book. And hey, I'm not taking to aging any better than she is!

Blue Nights belongs to the category of what I call "Prime Lit". In my set of literary values, books belonging to "Prime Lit" list are not just time killers or compedia of useful info. Hence, even three stars in "Prime Lit" beats five stars in thrillers, romance, How To books, etc. Prime Lit should be judged on the basis of their literary form and more than contemporarily fashionable content, and not on whether they allowed me a pleasant afternoon. Joan Didion's book wins on both counts. In essence, Blue Nights tries to offer Didion's life-time setting of personal accounts. The book attempts to cope with the terrible loss of her husband and her adopted daughter, Quintana Roo, as seen through her own perspective of aging, frailty, fear of debilitating disease and death, and above all - loneliness. Didion painstaikingly (and painfully) tries to re-create the past, to resuscitate Quintana's ghost by attempting to create a mosaic of fading mementos and memories. Understendably, she mostly fails, and what should have been a therapeutic healing process becomes a somber dirge. Several years ago I read "The Years of Magical Thinking", an account of her husband's death and her daughter's illness. I loved that book. It was frightening exactly because it touched every raw nerve in my own life. Blue Nights however was different. Initially, I disliked it. Its repetitious format, its lists of truisms and eternally valid and therefore almost pedestrian complaints seemed like whining and turned me off. I also resented Didion's resentment of being regarded as belonging to the privigeledged class. It is obvious - she was priviledged. Yet the book inadvertently emphasizes how all the fame, relative affluence, entitlement, failed to protect Didion, her husband, and Quitana Roo from physical and mental illness and suffering. Slowly the form to which I objected, the elegiac repetitions, the pain and fear, got to me. Above all, Didion is masterful writer. She manipulates terse slivers of text, in their repetitions and in their laconic lack of pathos, to create the emotional impact of the book. This is not an easy book to read, but in its unique way it is a book about being human, a reminder of who we all are and where most of us are going when we age. A must.

I think you have to realize, when reading this, that this is Joan's swan song. It's easy to fall into the "wow---too much name-dropping, too much woe-is-me" camp and dismiss this as a self-indulgent wallow. But this was Joan's life. She had a ridiculously out-of-touch-with-life-as-we-know-it life but it was hers and she's here to share it with us.We can judge her with our own scales or see this as a portal to a life that we can't relate to except in the concept of emotion. This book takes us on a journey that is foreign but nonetheless leaves us sad, wondering, and compassionate, if only to mourn her frailty.

It's an incredibly personal moving tribute and chronicle of loss, you have to keep that in mind. It's raw and unpolished. It's not meant to have any great epiphanies or any kind of bright outlook or moving personal growth, etc. It's simply the act of and details surrounding loss, which is all very personal. So I can't say that I liked or loved it; it just is what it is.God, what Didion has been through. She has got to be the toughest woman I've ever heard of. If you haven't read 'The Year Of Magical Thinking', try to read that first, then this one.For being able to write through it, for being able to survive it, she is my hero.

I can see why Gabriel Garcia Marquez won the Nobel Prize for literature. The book has a very unique style. It is more like painting a picture with words than telling a story in the usual sense. In a painting you can move your focus, look around and see different parts quickly, then maybe study some details. Similarly, the scenes in the book are not in chronological order. In fact, the first scene is actually near the end temporally (so don't worry that the next paragraph of this review is giving anything away, you will find these things near the beginning of the book). The author gives a glimpse of various points in time, and then fills in details as the book progresses. And, it is more than just a picture of these characters' lives, it is a picture of a time and a place. At the end of the book, you will feel like you have lived there.For most of the book, I thought it was a tragedy not a love story. I disagree with many reviewers, it was not a book about unrequited love, because Florentino Ariza was never in love. Even though Florentino Ariza was successful in a worldly sense, I felt sorry for him. He never loved Fermina Daza, they were never much more than acquaintances. He wasted his entire life being in love with the idea of being in love, but never understanding what love is. Love is not a disease, it is not infatuation, it is not lust, it is not an extreme form of like. For most of his life, his love was about himself, even when he was proud to be suffering for it. Only at the very end did he realize that love is about the one being loved, it is something you do; love is a verb, not a state of being. Also, only at the end of the book did I really understand the title of the book.

The writing is nothing short of masterful. My problem is that the protagonist, at least for the majority of the book, is a reprehensible human being. He falls in love at a very young age even though he's never actually talked to the girl, only exchanging notes, and maintained this obsession for his lifetime. She marries another after firmly rejecting him. It is incomprehensible to me that he sustains this for over 50 years. During that time, even though he is described as somewhat slovenly in his appearance and not attractive, he manages to voraciously bed multiple women, some for one time some as ongoing lovers. He only truly "loves" one person. A girl sent to him for protection who he seduces at the age of fourteen after grooming her for a few years. So we are supposed to be heartened when in his 70's he finally "gets the girl." My revulsion at this character was only overcome by the absolutely beautiful writing, the fully realized characters and the description of time and place. Be warned, this is a long and complex book, not an easy read.

Now, as a grad student, I HATED this book. Not because it wasn't well written but because I hated the characters and the overall theme. Not sure why everyone loves this one so much. That's my honest review. Take it how you wish.

This stunning work captures the feelings of love and tragedy all in one. Of course, the author is very famous for this and other works. Be ready for a dark road down a very interesting path as the years go by in the lives of the two main characters. There is a little funny business about his sexual exploits but I don't want to give away the special way he worded things. Gotta read it!

I almost put this book down and didn't finish it more than once. But I forged on due to a good friend's gushing response to it so thought I had to finish it to see what I might miss otherwise. The story was very tedious and too many switch backs in time to confuse. Characters were not worth all the many many pages given them. I didn't embrace, identify with, or sympathize with any of them. Would NOT recommend this book to anyone I know, including my book group.

The somewhat languid pace of the novel fits with the times, the climate, and the social mores of the setting. It also enables a nuanced exploration of the kinds of love experienced by the main characters in the story. It could be argued that the central theme of the relationship between the two primary characters is somewhat farfetched, but when does love follow a formula (except in rom-coms)? While not a page-turner, the story remains engaging throughout. The author has a lovely way with words (as captured by his English translator) that brings the texture of people, time and place to vivid life. I thought the author let the primary male character off the hook for his poor judgment in the final (of many) love relationships before returning to his lifelong inamorata. But maybe it is also my own biases intruding. All in All, a great read from an author of almost magical word-power.

I absolutely adore this book. I've always been heavy into Russian literature and was interested in reading something different - this book hit the spot. Marquez has a way of writing that entices you and makes you never want to put this book down. His romantic vocabulary as well as vivid writing style really grabbed me. I highly suggest this for any lovers of Nabokov.

This was highly recommended to me by someone whose opinion I valued. Completely different from anything I had read before. The book engages you in the lives of various characters and shows them persevering in a tough time. It took me a reading marathon, finished it after being buried in it almost a whole day.

Love it!

It was hilarious.I mean who would let a horse eat a fire hydrant or let a donkey sleep in a bathtub!

This is a great book if you're teaching government. The laws in it are very funny - my classes have always gotten a kick out it!

Funny and great crazy laws.....

I read this book, i was looking forward to reading the crazy laws, but there wasn't that many. They only threw in a few and then talked about how laws are passed. I was disappointed, I got this book because i thought my kids would like it, but besides the pictures that you can't read on the kindle; and the few laws they mention. My kids were bored with this book in 10 mins.

This is a picture book with 23 laws from around the United States that are still on the books, but are completely rediculous. There is one law on each page with a picture to illustrate it. One example is that "Donkeys are not allowed to sleep in bathtubs. from Brooklyn, NY". There are also several pages which explain how are national and state governments work and how laws are made. It's a great book for Social Studies for 2nd/3rd graders.

I wnjoyed reading this book and finding out about strange laws. I am going to be using this to help my students learn about weird and interesting laws. I am going to see if they can guess them correctly.
