Highly engaging informational book that presents three unusual stories about plants and animals around the world, but only two of them are true!Two things I loved: that the authors want readers to go and research to find the truths (or lies) for themselves. The research guide gives them tips on how to spot “fake news,” where to go to find reliable sources, and when to use common sense. The world needs this now. The second thing was the book’s structure: organized in three parts (plants, animals, and humans) with engaging text features and side notes, Two Truths is a feast for the eyes that will have kids saying, “Wow!”

My fourth-grade daughter LOVES this whole series! We had to buy them for our home library. The facts are so unique and fun, and the illustrations/graphic design are clean and beautiful. Look forward to more of these books!

I teach 5th grade and my students love this book! They ask for it as a read aloud and enjoy debate as to what facts seem true and why they think this way.

I haven't had the chance to use this with my students yet. There is a lot of text for third graders, but I can work with that. This will be great in teaching about "fake news" - how do you know when something is real? How do you know what sources to trust? There are two additional titles in this series coming out and I'm looking forward to getting them too.

The format for this book is brilliant for middle-grade readers! Each chapter has three sections with three different "stories." Two are true; one contains a lie. However, all three sections contain some pretty unbelievable content. Such a fun book to read and discuss with kids. I love the extra tips about research included in the book. A great way to show students the importance of thinking critically, questioning, and verifying facts. You can't believe everything you read!

This is a fantastic book for kids of all ages! We read it around a pool this summer and had so much fun guessing the lie and learning so much from the truths! My teacher sister absconded with my original copy and then my second went to a well-deserving teacher friend! Buy it for classrooms and coffee tables! You won't be disappointed!

This book is on my holiday book gift list for kids. Anyone will be intrigued, but middle grade readers are really intrigued by the crazy living things in this book. I really enjoy book talking this book. Great gift idea!

I bought this book to use with my students (I’m a librarian). It was part of my unit on evaluating information with my seventh graders. They LOVED it!!! They want more! I will buy more books like this. Anything that is educational and engages students is a keeper!

This is actually the fourth in a series of books by John & Ruth Picard on antique trade beads. Essentially this volume is a 90-page descriptive catalog of Venitian Millifiore beads used for trade with Africa. Large format and measuring 8 1/2 by 11 inches ( or 21.5 by 28 cm), One of the most attractive and obvious peatures is that every bead is pictured in color and if known, details of the manufacturing process are provided! The Picards open by describing how these beads were made and defining some of the terms used throughout. Millifiore means "Thousand Flowers" in the Italian language, and indeed many of these beads seem to boast floral patterns. ALso included is a helpful article by Jamey Allen, "A Short History of Millifiore Work".Each one of these beads is a mini work of art, truely lovely to behold. If you are lucky enough to have some of these little treasures, or simply have an interest in glasswork and history, you will probably enjoy leafing through this work. Happy Beading :)

I bought this book after reading Melanie Mitchell's book Complexity: A Guided Tour. I wanted to read more about her Copycat project, and Fluid Concepts has a few chapters on that.This book is really a collection of articles about different projects attempting to model the way people think. It's not about artificial intelligence the way most people think of it nowadays (pattern matching), but more about how people relate ideas to each other. You might think it would be outdated, but I get the sense that most AI researchers have not pursued this way of thinking, instead focusing on neural networks (machine learning).The articles are collected with (some) hindsight and editing to prevent too much repetition. That said, it's still a bit repetitive in many places. However, that's forgivable because the ideas are so revolutionary that some repetition is desirable.Hofstadter's ideas seem right on to me. If you want to learn about those ideas, this book is more accessible than Goedel, Escher, Bach, though if you get interested in Hofstadter you should definitely read GEB.

This book is, as others have commented, different from DH's other more entertaining books.It is a serious attempt to discuss the real issues and difficulties with AI research. There is a lot of quite dry material and in places it is repetitive.It provides terrific insight into the problem of imitating human thinking at a deep level, and I found it very rewarding. It was also very interesting to follow the threads of how he went about doing research, and what he thought of other AI research.His views of various flavours of AI research were very instructive and inightful I thought.In summary a good book, but this is not (high quality) brain candy like Godel Escher Bach etc.

When I first read this book years ago, I found it very intuitive and exciting to look at the problems in this new way. It definitely makes a clear distinction between "expert systems" and proper intelligence. I recently went back and started reading it again. I'm still amazed by the false sense of simplicity of the problems Hofstaedter tries to solve and how complex they actually are. I wonder if they are not complete in some sense anyhow.It's great fun reading the book and following the train of thoughts is enjoyable and simple enough ... at least for somebody with a basic understanding in maths and maybe some AI knowledge. So if you started to read Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid but never finished it, this is a much easier and more pragmatic read than Hofstaedter's more generic book.

Explores the broad strokes of a decade's worth of research by one of the most eloquent and interesting cognitive scientists working. I personally would have been happier to delve deeper into the specifics of the projects--appending some of the papers in question would be a nice touch in a re-issue.

Loved it! Fascinating read on cognitive science. A little out of date, but well worth the read.

About the Author

Dick Neal was born and raised in Sanford, ME and graduated from Sanford High School in 1950. After high school, he attended the University of Maine, majoring in Wildlife Conservation. From 1951 to 1955, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a Radio Maintenance Technician. Upon discharge in 1955, he enrolled at the University of New Hampshire in the Electrical Engineering Program. He graduated in 1959 with a BSEE. Upon graduation, he went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and retired in 1986 after working 27 years as an Electronics Engineer in the Combat Systems Office. During the last 15 years of his career, he served as a Weapons Systems Manager on Submarines managing some of the world's largest and most complex weapon systems in the world. While working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, he lived in the Town of Sanford with his wife Rhea where they raised five children. During this same period, he was active in municipal affairs such as the Warrant & Finance Committee and the Planning Board. He was also on the Board of Trustees for the Goodall Memorial Library for 5 years and served on several School Building Committees. In 1987, he moved, with his wife, Rhea, to a 200+ year old farmhouse in Acton on the Milton Mills Road next to the school. In 1989, he was elected as Selectman/Assessor, where he completed three 3-year terms. During his tenure as Selectman/Assessor, he became a Certified Maine Assessor in 1993 and has written many of the Town of Acton policies, procedures and ordinances. He has served on many of the town committees and was the E911 Coordinator for the Town of Acton from 1998 to 2005. From 1998 to 2001, he served as EMA Director for the Town of Acton. He has been the Secretary of the Maine Federation of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association from 2003 to 2010. In 2010, he was elected 2nd Vice President of the Maine Federation.
