About the Author

Now Executive Director of the New England Air Museum, Jerry Roberts’ 30-year career as an exhibit designer, writer, documentarian, and museum executive has earned him a reputation as a storyteller able to engage the public in dynamic accounts of historical events and places with a very modern sensibility. He has served as Vice President in charge of Exhibits at the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum in New York City, Executive Director of Connecticut River Museum in Essex CT, and Battlefield Historian for the British Raid on Essex Project. He has designed and built over forty exhibits, has written or co-written several books and documentaries and has published dozens of newspaper and magazine articles. Roberts is an avid sailor and merchant marine master and has navigated the eastern seaboard in small boats and historic vessels from The Gulf Coast to Nova Scotia. He lives overlooking the Connecticut River with his wife and two children. When not flying wide body passenger jets around the globe for one of the worlds largest airlines, Captain Tom Walsh, a United States Marine Corps veteran, explores Americas landscape and waterways in his own small aircraft. His company, Shoreline Aerial Photography (www.shoreline-aerial.com) is commissioned by major corporations, government agencies, and individuals to document large scale construction projects, keep tabs on urbanization, and capture breathtaking views of private homes, vessels, and majestic scenes all over the country. Speaking as someone who loves history and enjoys well done photography, “The Connecticut River from the Air” is a delight to read and own. After visiting family in Connecticut I received a copy as a gift and I was so impressed with it that I then purchased another as a gift for my CT friend. It’s a wonderful book to browse the beautiful aerial photography and then to read nuggets of history from every switchback, town and bridge as the river winds it’s way from humble beginnings near the Canadian border to it’s majestic meeting with the Atlantic Ocean waters of the Long Island Sound. The author’s love of history shines clearly on every page and together with stunning photography makes this a delightful addition to any library. I highly recommend this book as a gift to yourself or for anyone!

Being from the Northwest, I hadn’t much considered the beauty and history of the Northeast, until reading The Connecticut River From the Air, by Jerry Roberts and Tom Walsh.This book is a compelling combination of pictures and text. Each page contains eagle-eye views of the Connecticut River and surrounding scenery. The images come alive with entertaining, and concise comments on river geography and history. I felt that a knowledgeable guide was leading me on a pleasant trip through territory I found newly interesting. I may actually have to stop being only an arm-chair tourist and become an in-person visitor.The Connecticut River From the Air is more than a table top beauty. It deserves to be enjoyed cover to cover traveling the way explorers did from the ocean outlet to the inland source. Very well done, a good read!

About the Author

Born in 1923, Richard was raised in a rural community in California during the Great Depression. At the outbreak of WWII he joined the Army Air Corps and served in the famous "Flying Knights" Fighter Squadron with Major Dick Bong, America's all time ace of aces. Lt. Kirkland flew 103 combat missions in P-38 and P-47 fighters dogfighting Japanese Zeros, attacking enemy installations, ships, and flying escort for bombers. After WWII, Lt. Kirkland was assigned to a top secret project of testing atomic bombs in the Marshall Islands.During the Korean War, Captain Kirkland traded his wings for rotors and flew 69 helicopter missions rescuing downed pilots from behind enemy lines and snatching wounded soldiers from the battlefield at the 8055 MASH, home of the infamous "Hawkeye." Major Kirkland was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, five Air Medals, the Air Force Commendation Medal and both the U.S. and Korean Presidential citations for his service in WWII and the Korean War.Richard sketched and painted his surroundings as a boy in California, writing short stories to match his artwork. During his military service he continued, sketching and painting his surroundings, capturing history as it occurred. He used his art for inspiration in his writing. He has written and published numerous magazine short stories and articles, and four books about his experiences. His last book "Wide Place in the Road," is historic fiction, based on true historic incidents with real characters that Richard knew and associated with during the span of the book from the Great Depression through WWII.Richard is very active at 89 and speaks regularly at various civic, social, and historic societies. He has been a featured speaker at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., and was interviewed on both the American and Canadian History Channels. He and his wife Maria, who is also an artist, have nine children, sixteen grandchildren and one great grandson.

My son asked if he could read this instead of another book I meant for him to read for homeschool. Well, history and well written pages can't go wrong. My son isn't a reader, but he read this entire book, and hopes to be a pilot himself one day. He really enjoyed the stories, and the book kept his interest which is amazing since he won't read unless I put a book in his hand. He also read Tales of a War Pilot by the same author and enjoyed that as well.

Authentic stories of brave, courageous pilots tell their story to an experienced helicopter pilot. It encompasses civil as well as miitary experiences spanning over 60 years.Well written with excellent description of people, and their reaction to danger.

This book was so well written, informative & entertaining all at the same time that I was done reading it long before I wanted to be done!I intend to purchase his other book about fixed-wing flying just because if it is half as good as this one I can't go wrong!

For those of us that are younger than those that served our country in WWII or later in Korea, these stories of some of the earliest uses of the helicopter at the battlefields are sure to astonish. Here are accounts from the perspective of a pilot navigating the air spaces above the battlegrounds of Korea. It presents a view of the helicopter's role in the skirmishes and fighting that was not previously experienced in any wartime and it breathes reality into the stories of the pilots who pioneered that emerging capability of our military. This and the several other books written by Kirkland from his sharp recounting of those days should not be overlooked. There is both historical and personal interest value in all his works for those that now know the freedoms we enjoy.

Way too large (paper size) to use in a car. Very difficult to use, even when spread flat on a large table for planning purposes. I've used several of the Michelin Maps and will abandon this map for a more useful scale and size Michelin version.

This is a large, two-sided map. It is somewhat difficult to fold/unfold in the car, but the large size allows for enough detail for it to be useful. Without a GPS, it was a necessity.

AS SOON AS I UNFOLDED THE MAP, IT RIPPED IN TWO AREAS ALONG THE FOLD CREASE.LOOKS TOO BIG TO UNFOLD IN A SMALL VEHICLE. GOOD TO UNFOLD ON A LARGE TABLE.

This map has an extraordinary level of detail, although some indications may be wrong, as indicated by a previous reviewer. On the negative side, it is very large and therefore really unwieldy for use in a car. It would be good for route planning in your room the night before driving, but you would then need to fold it so that only the area you are driving is exposed, and everything else is folded behind. My sister used this on a recent trip through these two countries, and also found it too big to use comfortably when riding in a car.

This map should be used with some caution. some of the road numbers do not match up or are not clearly marked in person. also the projected roads make the map a little confusing as they do not currently exist. we used this map as well as Google maps online and never got too lost.

I'm a novice, Florida, raised-bed gardener, and I turn to this book almost daily. It's very detailed and useful. It's also written by an author who has extensive experience with Florida gardening himself. I hope in a few years the author will come out with a second edition since products change and I would love to see his comments on new developments in gardening.

Very useful! I live in central Florida and this book has all the information I need to my vegetable garden. When it comes to fruit trees the information is a little limited, particularly when it comes to citrus fruit trees, but when it comes to all different kind of vegetables, the books gives you great guidelines to keep you busy planting year around

We love, love, love this book! My son took it twice from the library and I decided to buy it for him. He was very excited to have his own color monster book. Like a parent I like this book very much. Story and ilustrations are amazing. It's a good way for kids to learn about emotions.

I like everything about this book. I am planning on buying 5 favorite books as a gift to a child. This book gently shows a child, we do have emotions. But the story also gives answers to those emotions , when they happen. The ending is so sweet.

Cutest book! My son fell in love with this book. My husband thinks it is cute for teaching emotions. My 2yo still doesn’t really associate it with the colors, but he likes the story and pictures anyway.
