I am a consumer of the written word, not a writer, but I have a college degree and I cannot understand why Houseman's work is looked down upon by professional "critics." Maybe they have never lived in a gorgeous countryside with all the beauty and struggle that occurs there for every living thing, from the insects in the pasture, the blade of grass reaching for the sunlight, to the grazing animals, the bird life and the bending backs of the humans tending the fields and woods.

Very poor print. Poems share the same pages, as another reviewer said, which makes them start at awkward parts of the page and will break the flow. Low res image on the front cover. The book itself is comically large, like the size something a children's book would be printed on, but the print itself belongs on a book half the size, leaving a majority of the page blank. Not sure if the hardcover is any better, but I cannot suggest the paperback.

I recently purchased and read "Out of Africa" after my wife and I saw the movie again on television one evening. The poem that Meryl Streep read at Finch-Hatton's grave in the movie was very touching. Also, near the end of the movie when Karen Blixen is leaving Africa, the men at the club stand her a drink. Her toast, "rose lipped maidens, light foot lads' prompted me to look for the source of the quote. In doing so I found "A Shropshire Lad" which contain both poems. I have been a poetry lover since I was a school boy, and my parents, especially my father, liked poetry. I still read and re read poems and, as my father would suggest, think about what is being said, what the writer is trying to convey in the poem. My dad used to regale us with recitations of the poems of Robert Service, such as "The Cremation of Sam McGee". I was amazed at how he remembered poems from his youth.A.E Housman's poems are, to me, touching and filled with emotion, and reminiscent of a time when literature was appreciated much more than today. I have not read the entire collection of poems in "A Shropshire Lad" yet. But I will. I save it for times when I want a little quiet time so I can sit and read and enjoy it. I keep it next to my easy chair for those times and look forward to making my way thorugh them all.GLM

You either love A.E. Housman or you don't. His verse is dark, filled with irony and sometimes painful to read, but if you can get past the mood it's also beautifully constructed and very human; which is why this edition of his seminal work is special. Beautifully bound in natural linen cloth by the Folio Society (London) and encased in a dark tan slip case, it's printed on substantial paper stock and incorporates a half dozen multi color illustrations by Patrick Procktor."A Shropshire Lad" was Housman's first collection, originally published in 1896, and generally considered to be his greatest work. Throughout his verse runs the competing themes of duality of spirit and ambiguity which reflects his own uncomfortable relationship with the world he lived in. Though not unique to poetry Houseman was the first to be universally identified with this thematic characterization and, in many ways is a precursor to the prose of 20th century American writers such as John Cheever. Housman was a man clearly troubled and expressing in verse what he could not in life. To truly appreciate and understand him is beyond a brief book review and I would urge you to pick up a copy of "Bloom's Poets, A.E. Housman" to compliment this slim volume.Underrated and somewhat unappreciated by those who found his demeanor challenging, Housman was caught in the murky middle between the Romantics and the coming literary giants of the 20th century. He deserves a second look and this volume is the perfect vehicle.

I adore this book of poems, and one of my most prized possessions is a very old, leather bound edition that I found in an antique store. That one is safely tucked away to prevent further deterioration, so a nice Dover Thrift version to carry around with me was just what the doctor ordered. If you're not a big poetry fan, this may be the right "starter" for you. Houseman's poems are simple yet thought-provoking, and they all strike me as hauntingly beautiful. This is my favorite book of poetry to just read straight through. Sometimes I read it all the way through at a sitting and other times I'll just read one or two and ponder a while. Houseman's themes of the transience of youth and the inevitability of death are easily relatable to all human beings, and his diction is so simple and direct that his meaning is usually clear. I recently ordered several of these to give out to my students (I teach high school) because the price is so unbelievably cheap. Briliant, beautiful poetry for $2! Need I say more?

The poems are all there and as beguiling as ever. The book itself is cheaply produced with very small print and thin paper. Had I known, I would have chosen a different edition.The experience of reading them in this poorly assembled format is not what I expected..

A classic. A quick read for those with little time. Beautifully written with gorgeous, vivid images. Filled with sympathy and love of his fellow man and nature. Writers don't write like this now. My father was an English major. This book was dear to him.

Evocative, palpable imagery, feel the wind, the inestimable peace of England's countryside, while taking our sensibilities into the loss, the grief, of boys' in the foreign mud and racketing horror of war. Juxtaposed, this conflict of peace and war is transmitted by Mr. Houseman in deceptively simple verse that seems to amble with us going walkabout, over a stile, pushing through a stand of bluebells, but our minds woefully elsewhere. Lovely, kind, strong, memorable.

good guide and informative

I've always liked "Insight Guide" books. It's so much more than a where to eat/ where to stay book. If you only want restaurants and hotels, this is not the book for you. If you want some history, geography, customs, you'll like this book. Don't get me wrong. It is a great guide book and does give hotels and restaurants, just not like other guide books. The photos are awesome....makes me want to go right now and not next year when I'm actually planning on going.

This book was hot and steamy with just enough of a love story thrown in. Raven found her total package and wasn't even looking, who say you can't find love after a heartbreak

Awesome story and I can’t wait for more, I felt so bad for all the hurt Raven went through but Rashad was a real man and I’m glad he didn’t give up on her!

This book is most informative.What I didn't like about it is that the first edition, not in print, has additional information explaining much of what the 2nd edition omits. The rewrite of the book requires reading those portions of the 1st edition not in the 2nd.Together they are very helpful and useful if becoming a mediator is a consideration.

Great read! This book was concise and well versed on negotiation jargon. It helped a lot with my negotiations class to receive my MBA.

There are quite a few mistakes in this text, which initially cause some confusion, but after careful thought you can figure out what the textbook meant to say. I also have issues with the way the text does not summarize the key issues or points of it's chapters or sections. Otherwise, it is a relatively simple subject matter and the author does a good job of laying out the subject.

I have read a lot Jung, Joseph Campbell, various other experts on mythology and symbolism, but this book put all of that knowledge and information into practical and applicable form. The application of those theories and ideas is better explained and articulated here than in any other book I've read.

In my efforts to understand and deal with my child's nightmares, I have found respite in Robert Johnson's Inner Work. I have trusted his books for some time because he has a gift for using Jungian principles and keeping things simple. By using archetypal comparisons rather than personal anecdotes, his approach to teaching you how to explore dreams is direct and unbiased. He offers an overview of necessary terms and reminds us (quoting from Carl Jung) that "God speaks in dream."This book does not claim to be the ultimate book on dream analysis but it gives you the tools to explore your unconscious in his 4-step to Active Imagination. His approach to understanding symbols empowers you to make your own definitions and associations, rather than telling you what they mean universally, because everyone is different - and that is so the case with my daughter.If you are looking to develop the understanding your mind at sleep, this is a great introduction. I would also suggest The Nightmare Solution for other approaches on working out your dreams and We, He, and She by Robert Johnson.

This is honestly one of the best books I've read in a long time. I recently received a bachelor degree in psychology and I just started grad school for master's degree in professional mental health counseling. Dream work has always interested me, but boy was I in for a surprise after reading this book. Of course, the actual dream analysis steps are quite amazing. But there's TONS of other information in this book about inner growth. The pages literally drip with the stuff. As far as the 4 steps of dream analysis, I got a change to use them for the first time a few days ago with a fellow college cohort. She had an extremely powerful dream over 4 years ago that she was never able to fully understand. After a half hour going through the steps she knew exactly what the dream was about. Both she and I were speechless. It was an awesome experience. As someone who eventually wants to become a licensed professional counselor, with dream work being one of my modalities, this book is ESSENTIAL. I cannot recommend it enough. Really.

While I have been unimpressed by several of Johnson's other works, I found this to be excellent: terse, cogent, and practical. If you are considering "inner" work, this is an excellent place to start.

It seems that after this book this author has written much on the subject of Jungian work but the majority appears to be a survey of ideas, unlike this book which is the heart of actually doing Jungian work. Since I'm becoming a clinical social worker I tend to read many books such as this one to know how the actually meat of many forms of therapy and inner work are carried out. Much out there is pure junk that loses my interest very quickly. This book is a joy to read through and the examples are very relevant. The author does not go off on tangents about personal anecdotes, something that tends to bore me with many authors.I have had an interest in Jungian work but have found it very abstract and not as down to earth as many other forms of therapy or psychological work. This book takes you directly to the core of the two most important ways of Jungian work: dream work and active imagination. There are several other methods used in analytic work but these are the most fundamental. The four steps are accessible and simple to carry out.As I have an interest in having at least a foot in Jungian ideas as a therapist this book will be invaluable for both my inner work and those of my future clients.The only problem I find is that the Jungian school needs more of a place for body and emotive work to ground the abstract in direct present experience using methods such as: Gestalt methods, Gendlin's Focusing Technique, meditation and so on. Otherwise this is by far the most practical work by a Jungian that I have come across.

I've read a few books and listened to some CDs on dream interpretation, but Johnson's Inner Work is the first one to give me real confidence that I can do this myself. The process he outlines does take time -- it isn't a "go with your gut" quick fix -- but it leads to some intense, evocative results. The 4-step process is deceptively simple: Step 1 - Identify key images and your associations to those images; Step 2 - Ask yourself where these images/associations show up in your life; Step 3 - Interpret the dream, and; Step 4 - Complete a ritual around the dream that makes it more concrete in your life. I was amazed at the many associations that came to me with each image as I completed step 1, some of them were relevant and some not, but ALL of them made me think. Step 2, I admit is the most difficult for me, and step 4 probably the most meaningful. Again, this is not for the lazy or faint of heart. You don't just dive into interpretation, and it takes some effort to make the associations Johnson asks us to make in order to arrive at a reasonable interpretation. But it sure is worth it! I've made some interpretations that have just astonished me and moved me. Beyond the mechanics of dream interpretation, the book is incredibly well written. Johnson is a thoughtful, engaging writer who puts words together in a way that we not only understand but enjoy reading.
