I enjoyed the author's writing style and appreciate all the hard work he did back up his claim using scientific studies. Overall I found it an enjoyable read and appreciated his section on motivation. I was disappointed that after he went through all the effort to determine and discuss best ways for burning fat and increasing muscle mass he didn't provide sample workouts to follow. It would be nice to see a recommended schedule and exercises it should include. If you want to find that out, you will have to buy another book. Similar with nutrition. Laid out a few diets and what he tried along the way, but lacked detail. You would need to buy another book on what ever nutrition plan you decide on.
The title and the perspective of a middle age dad turning his health around hooked me. I'm in that boat right now. Nice to find a book specifically tailored to my fitness situation and goals, but I have to say I was disappointed in the end result. I wanted to hear his story and how he accomplished what he did. His triumphs and his foibles and what things really worked for him. Instead, the book is mired in citing study after study. It becomes distracting and a little annoying, as it interrupts the narrative. In small doses, having your science ducks in a row to back up your content is good, but it kind of took over here. There is a thin line on the cover, "over 200 references to the latest research." The font should have been bigger, as I think it is a better description of the book.
As someone who's hitting their upper 50's, I am always on the look out for something new, something different, something that sets itself apart from the thousand of other fitness books that are aimed at a younger crowd. I opened up "Ripped Dad" hoping for the above, but it was pretty evident, after a few chapters, that we were going to focus on science and citing studies (Matt's website is called sciencebod after all) rather than the personal, Matt's journey to get his own ripped dad bod. Unless you have never read a Men's Health, or a Muscle and Fitness, or any of a thousand other health and fitness blogs out there, I cannot recommend this book. I recommend the author revisit their own journey to health and fitness, share their story, and make the book much more personal and intimate. We need to know that we are not alone out here. The person who can do that, they will have thousands of readers on their doorstep daily.
I always try to read some sort of self help book at the beginning of the year to help motivate me to make wise choices concerning my health for the year to come. This one was definitely inspiring! Some have said that they got bogged down with some of the quotes and citations but I found them inspirational as well. Inspired to educate myself like Matt has done! I am an Ironman Triathlete so a lot of the science I was very familiar with but it's always good to remind yourself that staying fit and staying active is paramount to your health. You are ultimately responsible for your health and Matt lays out a great roadmap for how to succeed in that endeavor. Get this book, do what Matt says and get ready to have a great year!
This is a fantastic book. I’m 51 and have worked out since I was 15. Have read many fitness books and magazines during that time and this one is definitely in my top 10. The workouts are perfectly balanced and realistically fit a working dad’s time schedule. And if you adhere to his advice you will see results.
The book was OK, especially given the price (3.99 with 2.99 back for another book), but as many other reviews mention, not a whole lot on “the how†and mostly and “the why†you should get in shape. The road he took and maybe mention typical day with diet included would’ve been helpful. But it did help me stay motivated on my quest to be a fit Dad.
One man's story no exercises in the book. No pictures in the book.
Great books boiled it all down to the basics I.e. the essential stuff to get back what has slipped away.
