Review

“Bracing…calls to mind books like Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney, and especially Liar’s Poker by Michael Lewis…As spectacle [the book] easily trumps both…Mr. Duff proves a fine wordsmith: his prose is smooth, lean and rhythmic…An entertaining and cautionary tale, well worth your time.”-Bryan Burrough, The New York Times  “A heavyweight confessional about the perils of a life spent chasing the almighty dollar…even though the author’s brutal honesty about his increasingly chaotic personal life is commendable, it’s really more his vivid portrait of the everyday inner workings of life at a hedge fund that fascinates…A fast-paced memoir of the easy-money hypercapitalist dream-turned- nightmare.”--Kirkus Reviews “Looking for a Hollywood-worthy account of Wall Street with lots of juicy details about the high life? Duff, a former financial trader who climbed the ranks at several major firms, provides a fascinating glimpse into the trader’s life as he narrates his journey from smalltown boyhood in Kennebunk, Maine, to hitting the jackpot in Manhattan, to succumbing to the poisons of success…[This] fast-paced tale will absorb readers…a wild ride.”--Publishers Weekly“This is why I keep my money safe and sound under the mattress. You could get high just reading this book. Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Wall Street traders." --James Patterson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls“Turney Duff is a natural storyteller, and his tale of how a naive kid from Maine traded in L.L. Bean for Armani and got sucked into the seamy side of Wall Street is almost impossible to put down. The book is by turns hilarious, harrowing, maddening, and illuminating. After this debut, the smart money will be on Duff.”--Bethany McLean, New York Times bestselling author of The Smartest Guys in the Room and All the Devils Are Here “Turney Duff’s The Buy Side picks up where the Academy Award-winning film about systemic corruption on Wall Street, 'Inside Job', leaves off.  Duff, who at one time was the promising rookie on the trading desk at troubled hedge fund Galleon, gives us a front-row seat to the Street’s dark side – but the tale also features a personal story that will have you cheering as Duff fights his way through a jungle of excess and figures out what really matters. To all those who want to rule the market not just during business hours but after hours, beware -- you may not have Duff’s survival skills.” --Lawrence G. McDonald, New York Times bestselling author of A Colossal Failure of Common Sense “The Buy Side takes the reader on an extremely wild ride so eloquently and honestly that we never want it to end.  Cocaine wants everything you love and everything that loves you.  Turney Duff had everything and nothing while trading billions of dollars on a razor's edge. His book takes you from Wall Street to Skid Row to the Thompson Hotel – and then, mercifully, back to sanity and finding a place in the world. Hang on, The Buy Side is gonna move you around, and there are no seatbelts to keep you from getting hit hard.”--Brian O’Dea, author of High: Confessions of an International Drug Smuggler“The Buy Side is ‘Wall Street’ meets ‘Breaking Bad’ – except that this book is fact not fiction. Turney Duff yields to temptation at every turn, and the sheer volume of criminal behavior he saw, and even participated in, is astonishing…If you want to see Wall Street’s seamy underbelly firsthand, read this book.”--Frank Partnoy, bestselling author of F.I.A.S.C.O and Infectious Greed "If you took Gordon Gekko, Bud Fox, a copy of Bright Lights, Big City, and threw them in a blender with an ounce of cocaine, a bottle of Patron Tequila, and your favorite teddy bear you'd have yourself a Buy Side smoothie. Turney's my kind of guy; a madman with heart.  I couldn't put the book down."--Colin Broderick, author of Orangutan “Does Wall Street make people crazy or are crazy people simply attracted to Wall Street?  The Buy Side doesn’t get us any closer to answering that question, but along the way we get a look inside perhaps the most ethically-challenged investment firm in recent memory, and a harrowing journey through drug addiction and recovery.  This is not a musical comedy; at the end, you’re just relieved that Duff is alive.”--Jared Dillian, author of Street Freak: Money and Madness at Lehman Brothers “Turney Duff's The Buy Side is the perfect parable for Wall Street's lost decade. Duff’s account of his rise and fall has it all, from a fast-paced coke-crazed trip through Manhattan nightlife that conjures Bright Lights, Big City, to an eyewitness account of insider trading and front running that reads like a federal indictment. Broke but not broken, Duff ends up better than others on Wall Street have--sober, chastened, and lucky to be alive after the self-destructive excesses of easy money and empty ambition.”-Guy Lawson, New York Times bestselling author of OctopusFrom the Hardcover edition.

I was a stockbroker back in the 80's, so I'm not entirely unaware of the lure of the markets and their employment opportunities. No, I wasn't an investment banker but I did know some.Despite my background - which also included stints as a bond broker and commodities broker, as well - I had trouble understanding how the worldwide destruction of equity occurred in 2007-9. I decided to read everything on the subject and as much on anything that touched it as I could.Really, this is neither. It's the story of one man's involvement in those markets. But even more about his involvement in what having the wealth of that position can do to a young and spoiled man.Still, no information is bad information. So is does serve to illuminate what at least some of those who nearly destroyed the worldwide financial markets did with all that money they earned. Nice to know it was used so wisely. If you like peaking into the lives of the rich, privileged, spoiled, and drug addled, you'll enjoy this. If you want to see where part of your 401k went, here ya go.If you want more, read 'Too Big To Fail' or 'Traders, Guns and Money' or any of the other 20-30 serious or semi-serious volumes on the excesses.

Fascinating story. this is a well written book offering excellent insights into the dark side of hedge fund traders and Wall Streeet. As a former equity salesperson, I used to observe the crazy and immature antics of the (mostly male) traders on the trading floor and often wondered what happened to them. I'm sorry those wild parties expensed as 'client entertainment' facilitated your addiction. Turney, thank you for sharing this painful story with such honesty and candor. It was interesting to learn how hedge funds generate fake trades to boost their commission base with brokers. Most importantly, if your book motivates brokerage firms and their clients to examine their entertainment practices -- you will have accomplished more than anyone. Thank you.

You don't need to know anything about the market or hedge funds to read and understand the author's story. He write it in a way that you can understand and actually learn what was going on in the markets. You'll hear about his childhood and how he came to be a trader on the buy side. You'll hear his stories of wild excesses. You'll hear of the birth of his daughter and how his addiction to cocaine and alcohol lead him to 2 stints at rehab. All of this to come to his true passion of writing. The book is well done, entertaining and educational.

I devoured this book in an afternoon - the honest brutality of the story, the fast pace of Turney's life as everything spills out in the present tense, as well as the darkest side of his addiction did not let me put my Kindle down.Granted, I might be a little partial, as there are many parts that resonate with some of my crazy years in NY and London, but what really tugged at me - and sometimes made me cringe - is how anyone, even a nice boy from PA, can descend into a dark abyss without realizing how fast he's falling until it's too late.I think this is more than a Wall Street tale: any industry that can make you feel rich and powerful so quickly can be intoxicating...the lyrics to Mr Brownstone by GnR could be the soundtrack to the second part of this story, when the train Turney is on loses control and heads to its final wreck. You will giggle, laugh, cringe and even feel repulsed as Turney unravels - all of this as we relive in amazing details the internet bubble, the 9/11 tragedy, the 2007 subprime crash. An awesome bio - I was simply left wanting more.

I really like this fast read with great info. The first 39% covers how a non Ivy graduate with meager talent ends up low level Wall Street and eventually on the "buy" side at hedge funds: and these are real player hedge funds which you now see on the front page of the WSJ. This is the best part, fast furious and informative. Now, it will make you wonder why you invest with all the shenanigans being pulled. From there he follows a mentor from a poor work environment to new glamour as a real trader with power to make brokers wealthy. And for this chance the brokers party and buy drugs. Too much drugs as he eventually is hooked and work suffers. All this happens as he falls in love and has a baby. The last part of the book is a drug story. Some funny, some sad. But not as exciting as the first 39%. I recommend the book for a story of the good and bad on Wall Street. Just be prepared for the drug story also.

This book started slow for me. After a few pages and early chapters, I though "this is a bit of a sensationalist, toilet reading, the like of what Ben Mezrich would write". And yet, not before long the book completely absorbed me and I could not put it down till I finished it. Turney Duff has real talent in telling stories and captivating the reader, with very vivid depiction of his adventures and misadventures. Brutally honest in so many ways, and yet lacking in others (details, for example, as other reviewers have mentioned). It reminded me of Michael Lewis's Liar's Poker, though Lewis ' writing is a bit more refined.Overall, the book is truly sad. The guy made so much money and he blew it. After he seemed to settle down, found a girl he fell in love with, he blew a chance to be close to her and his daughter. Although he eventually seemed to pull himself sober, and says he is happier now - I can't stop feeling bad for the guy, and am overwhelmed by how sad his story is. I give the book 4 stars, because his style at times is uncomfortably colloquial and conversational. Also, some of the jumps from story to story feel a bit abrupt.Nonetheless, a memorable book - one that's going to stay with me for a while. This is one of those books that should help wise men differentiate from smart men: learn from other people's experiences, not just from your own. Going to work in a high profile, highly competitive and flashy place like Wall Street? Read this book.
