About the Author

Since 1973, Rick Steves has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. Rick produces a best-selling guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and organizes small-group tours that take over 30,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of more than 100 well-traveled staff members at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, WA (near Seattle). When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic and social justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. To recharge, Rick plays piano, relaxes at his family cabin in the Cascade Mountains, and spends time with his son Andy and daughter Jackie. THIS WAS AWESOME, and soooo helpful! I went to rome and carried this around with me the whole time- it really helped with good eats and transportation. People that noticed I had this book commented also on how amazing the author was! I would strongly reccomend.Rick Steves talks about important places to see, what they mean, he includes maps, normal cultural etiquette etc etc etc. a MUST have if youre traveling into another country!

We did a week in Rome and utilized this book exclusively. We did the "must sees" and more or less followed the guides/walks presented in the book. (Of course, meandering plenty but generally sticking to the basic structure.) Overall, we feel like we had a great week and saw what we hoped to see. The best part of the book are the tips. For example, buying Colosseum/Forum tickets at the Palatine entrance saved us probably 60-90 mins of waiting in line (it felt like cheating.) Another great tip was entering St. Peter's Basilica from the Sistine Chapel (thereby saving another 60 min security line.) Those two tips alone were worth 10x what we paid for the book!I'll definitely seek out these pocket guides for future travels.

Short Review: Wonderful little book. Used it consistently while in Rome. Carried it in my back pocket until the last day when it fell out and I lost it while riding a bike on the super bumpy streets of Rome. The book is well worth the money!!!! I even saved an additional 15 euro by using Rick Steve's in a promo code for 2 tours I booked, so I actually saved money with this book.SUGGESTIONS:Suggestions for a FUN VACATION. (I just got back yesterday.)1) Read this book at least a few weeks before you go. It will give you a good base knowledge of what you can see and do.2) There are tons of things to see in Rome, so plan your days / schedules. Plan for sight seeing, and some for rest and relaxation. You will need it, maybe due to jet-lag and just wanting some rest. Plus, without stopping I could have missed the beauty of the culture - its people and how wonderful they are in so many ways.3) Know what you want to see and plan accordingly. Make a priority list of things you must see and hit those first so that if there are delays/obstacles you can have time to try to see them again if necessary.4) Find reputable Tour guides/companies. This is not a plug just my experiences. I went with Through Eternity Tours for 2 tours. Tour #1 The Vatican/St Peter's church / Sisteen Chapel - Grade: D. The guide was not a fan - so the sarcasm was thick and so was the constant degrading of everything the Vatican stood for, had done, and owned. I wasn't paying for the guide's personal theology, philosophy or opinions but for facts, history, etc about the place I'm visiting. It was very frustrating.Tour #2 Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum - Grade: A. The guide was fantastic. She has a Doctorate in Cultural Heritage. She brought visual aids to show you recreations of what the ruins would possibly have looked like etc. Her love for Rome, it's glory and it's faults was infectous. Her name was Enrica. If you go with Through Eternity use the promo code RickSteve or is it RickSteves try both, but it will save you 10% off the cost of the tour. Also, to see TOTALLY fascinating stuff but not on the big tours etc. I went with Free bike Tours of Rome. Simone was our guide and he took us on a 4 hour bike ride tour. I'm so glad went on it! I got so much out of that tour and we saw sights and learned history that wasn't a part of the other big tours. Totally worth it! Take water!!5) There is A LOT of walking in Rome. Wear shoes that can support your feet and also handle the bricked streets which are very uneven and quite bumpy.6) Download Rick Steve's Free audio tour guides and maps. They were EXCELLENT and FREE! I did the following: Heart of Rome Walk, Roman Forum, Colloseum, Pantheon, and Pompeii tours.7) Go to Piazza Novona and have the chocolate gelato from Tre Scilare (spelling?) Rick Steve's mentions it. It was worth it. If you don't want to pay for a meal to get it just go to the gelato shop to the far right, they sell it there and it will cost you 4 Euro.8) There are vendors everywhere!! So if you see something you want - NEGOTIATE!! Here is what I found. Whatever price the vendors walking around offer - counter offer with 10% of the initial asking price. Yes, 10%! Then very slowly raise your offer. The walking around vendors will protest the offer - it's all a song and dance. Even walk away from the vendor but walk away slowly they will eventually come back to you. But before you walk away they will give you a much more realistic price which you can get a better understanding of how much you should pay. At the end, I paid between 10-20% of their initial offer. So have fun, play the game and get something you might like.Negotiating with people with display stands etc, figure you can save at least 25-33% off of their listed price. I did.Painters/paintings - you can generally save 20-25% very easily! I wouldn't pay list price. The artists will almost immediately reduce the price themselves within minutes if you will just ask for the "best price" then let the games begin. These sellers are used to this process and expect it, except many Americans aren't used to negotiating. We look for items on sale. However, in Italy, create your own "sale" by asking for best pricing.Have a great vacation!God bless!

I've always viewed Rick Steves as the gold standard when it comes to guides for European travel, and this book was no exception. The pocket guides are my favorite because they give great highlights without giving every last detail. The whole book was great, but the portion on the Borghese Gallery was probably my favorite. I also really enjoyed the suggested walk through the different piazzas. My SO and I did the Walk right around sunset and it was wonderfully romantic. The little tips are great, too! The suggestion to exit the Sistine Chapel through the back door in order to access Saint Peter's Basilicia was a huge time saver!

We absolutely loved this travel book! We used this book as our bible during our visit to Rome. (That's saying a lot because we are 2 pastors!). I read the entire book on our flight to Italy & I am so glad I did! We were prepared to hit the ground running! The best parts of this book are:-tips on saving money. We learned about buying the Roma Pass which gave us transportation, entry into museums, & other discounts. Those Passes saved us so much money!-guided tours. There are many tours written in this book that guided us through important places & gave us a unique view that we would have been ignorant of without this book. The "Night Walk through Rome" is a turn-by-turn, fun, romantic, & educational guide to some beautiful parts of the city (including hidden & awesome courtyards), ending at the famed Trevi Fountain. My husband complained about this walk, so I read each part of the tour to him as we walked & he ended up loving it! He says it was one of his favorite parts of our visit to Rome.-map. The fold-out map in this book is awesome! We loved that we didn't have to carry an additional map.-size. This book is so small! We were able to fit it easily into our small travel bag.-insider information. This book led us to the Borghese Gallery. We saw the greatest art in Rome at that gallery! I will forever be grateful for Rick Steves for leading us there.-ratings. Rick Steves is so well traveled that he write honestly & thoroughly about Rome. We read about what was worth our time and what was not. We decided not to visit the tourist-heavy catacombs & instead traveled farther away to visit St. Priscilla's catacombs. We avoided many tourist traps because of this book. He even suggests places to picnic, go to the bathroom (for free), & get water.Adding this book to the free podcasts that Rick Steves offers gave us an incredible visit to Rome. No visit to Rome is complete without Rick Steves guidance!Buy this book, read it cover to cover before your trip, & you won't regret it!
