Jacques Vallee makes the case that, throughout history, each generation experienced strange phenomenon that either fit within their current cultural belief system, or was a glimpse of things to come. He's basically saying that we've gone from ancient myths and religion to ghosts and UFOs. And whether dealing with fairies and dwarfs or fallen angels and aliens, the overall experience has been the same down through the ages. It's an interesting perspective into the human psyche and raises many questions about the source of these beings and craft. Are they from a parallel dimension, other world, deep within our own planet, imaginary spirits, angels, or are we being manipulated for some purpose beyond our comprehension? No matter what you believe, this will open your mind to some things you probably never considered before. It did that for me.

Maybe even the first. Seminal classic by the brilliant Mr Vallee, if you enjoy these subjects just buy it, it was out of print and going for big $$ for years. I think his hypothesis holds up well- if you consider the logistics of vast interstellar travel and the fact that modern physics theorizes many different dimensions existing. UFO's defy normal physical laws and clearly have a higher understanding of reality. Their home worlds may have physical co-ordinates out there somewhere, or they may not. Anyone who enjoys this book would also probably enjoy 'Daimonic Reality' by Patrick Harpur, 'Operation Trojan Horse' by John Keel, and 'The Unidentified & Creatures of the Outer Edge' by Jerome Clark & Loren Coleman, currently available as a bargain 2 in 1 from anomalist books. These are all classic works that explore alternative paranormal/ interdimensional/ psychosocial theories of UFO's so..order some takeout, put on a Pink Floyd album and let yourself be carried away to somewhere otherworldly for a few hours..

Dr. Vallee is a scientist and has come to the same conclusions as others in the field. That what is going isn't about aliens because there are just too many types of craft sighted, too many different types of beings sighted. Too much negates the whole idea of aliens. Also the supposed aliens tend to do the things that fairies did before and gods and demons just with different contexts. Something that has been with us since we began and probably long before that. The listing of 100 years of sightings from 1868-1968 gives just a taste of how far ranging this is. And to poltergeist phenomena, and weird happenings in certain "window" areas where high strangeness happens all the time in cycles. Its like the pattern is the same, just that the clothes and devices change to match the time period. He and John Keel agree in several areas on this phenomena. And I agree with them. But since the phenomena itself supports the Aliens are coming here and it is vigorously carried and promoted voices like mine are in the grand minority. For anyone starting out or an old hand this is one of those books you need to have in your library.

Vallee compares centuries of folklore regarding "little people," "faeries," & other strange beings to the numerous reports of ET's & saucer landings. Only half the book is readable material; the second half is appendices listing centuries of verified landings.

This is the book I have been waiting for! Thanks to Jacques Vallee for reissuing this great classic work! If you are interested in the real phenomena behind UFOs and aliens this is it. The meticulous research that Vallee put into this work proves that UFOs and aliens are not extraterrestrial but indigenous to the earth; they have always been here, and have been manifesting to mankind for thousands of years. If you are ready for truth then here it is, served up by a giant in the UFO research field. If you still hold to the extraterrestrial hypothesis then get ready because this book cuts a path where few have been brave enough to tread, and it will challenge you to think--so much so, that if you still believe that UFOs and aliens originate from outside the earth, after reading this book you may have to rethink your theories; and it may force you to realize that the UFO and alien phenomena are actually quite different than what the mainstream extraterrestrial researchers are telling you!

I just discovered Jacques Vallee and this is my first book of his. I can't say enough good things about the author and the book, it's led me to order another half-dozen of his books. His theories of what ufos and their occupants are are quite compelling, and makes the reader want to learn more. This book was written four decades ago, but could have been written yesterday. I'm going to be up all night reading this, I think I'll order a pizza and soda with a high caffeine content. lol

Kept this with me in the car...kept reading and re-reading it during moments of solo time (such as standing in various lines--the bank, the pharmarcy)or sitting in waiting rooms or eating out alone. Fascinating and mind-boggling, followed up by "The Invisible College," more of the same, plus. Highly recommend this for anyone curious about UFOs or strange paranormal occurrences in his or her life.

Looks at the UFO phenomenon more from that standpoint of references in ancient folklore, versus modern-day case studies. It may take awhile to absorb the folklore for those who are more analytically and contemporary minded, yet it ultimately can sink in and provide a new angle about the phenomenon, esp. from a historical perspective.
