(This was originally posted on GoodReads. I have edited the review slightly to better suit Amazon reviewing).I've read Harper Fox before, but only her contemporary romance, "Scrap Metal," and that was a while ago. I enjoyed it, though, and was eager to see how she was at writing fantasy. I was not at all disappointed, and I'm eager to continue with this series! This is a short, concise, elegant little mystery leaning more towards Gothic horror than the paranormal romance I expected. Fox's writing is so lush and cozy, rife with beautiful, chilly, austere descriptions of the English moors. I'm actually a little bummed I couldn't have read it in October, because it is the ideal Halloween mystery--you can easily read the entire thing in one afternoon in your favorite chair with a cup of coffee.Fox's writing is undeniably romantic, but she's also one of the most refreshing, least flowery romance writers of today. For example, Gideon, our main detective character, is not simply horny and hard, he has had "a lonely, untouched year of it." Like, what a perfect way to say a man needs to get laid. I love it.This mystery is atmospheric and moody without being melancholy. There's no skimping on the details, especially for a short book--you feel like you're right in the cold, the grass, the dark. It made everything about the plot heightened. I'm glad Gideon and Lee got together quickly in the narrative, because I'm eager to see them work as a team again. Gideon's sharp, analytical mind paired with Lee's visual psychic abilities make for an excellent crime-solving duo. There was nothing special about the mystery itself. The motive was pretty weak and there was a pretty obvious giveaway line towards the beginning of the story that pointed blinding lights at the culprit. But I'd love to read about these two characters again in this small town, showing us more of the Moor and all the minor characters.

Gideon Frayne is a good village cop who hides his sexuality from the town folk. He's already lost a lover and now he has a case of a missing child. to deal with. His super suggests a psychic who has helped the police in the past, and has been successful. Although Gideon isn't thrilled with the idea, he is getting desperate as time passes and the child remains lost. When Lee Tyack shows up with his green eyes and hint of the clairvoyant it might be just what Gideon needs to help his case and his heart. The two men feel an instant attraction and work together to find the missing child. I kept thinking of Sherlock Holmes and 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' as I read. The story is heavy on atmosphere -- the village is named Dark which is on the Bodmin Moor with its history of strange goings on, there are tales of a monster on the moor as well, and oh, yes fog! Fox knows how to tell a spooky tale and her characters are attractive and seductive. Although this is a short story, it is Book 1 of Tyack and Frayne mysteries, and lays the groundwork for their future adventures. Fox writes well and her descriptions of M/M romance will keep the reader involved in the lives of the two men.

I'll skip the story summary, since you can read it as part of the book description above, but basically this is a Male/Male crime and romance story. This book is short but features a concise mystery (missing child, possible murder) that's balanced with very descriptive and visually simulating descriptions. At times, the language can get a bit dense and difficult to parse, especially when the author uses language specific to the region. The m/m romance is fast and intense, so those seeking more of a slow burn may be disappointed, but the characters definitely develop a real appreciation and respect for each other. The author reserves the slow burn for the mystery that works it's way through a maze of clues and misdirections. When the right pieces are in place, the mystery concludes with a sudden and intense climax.I only rated this 3 stars in part because it rushed through some points a bit too quickly and things wrapped up a bit too neatly. I'll likely read the next book to see if the lead characters get fleshed out a bit more. Oh, and I wanna know what happens with the dog ;)
