Review

“Ehrman provides an intriguing overview of memory studies and introduces readers to a variety of important pioneers and studies. . . . Ehrman’s provocative book raises engaging questions that drive readers back to the sources of our information about Jesus.” (Publishers Weekly)“One can see why Ehrman is so widely known and respected by so many people. Here Ehrman takes a completely different approach from his previous books. This book is a new approach to the study of the beginnings of Christianity.” (Association for Mormon Letters)”Jesus Before the Gospels is a scholarly yet readable study of Jesus and the Gospels. Ehrman’s scholarship remains unmatched. Ehrman unveils several unexplored aspects of the life of Jesus and the Gospels. Everybody with an interest in Christianity and religion in general will find this fascinating book useful.” (Washington Book Review)“With Jesus Before the Gospels, Bart D. Ehrman has written a thought-provoking book prompted by his interest as a historian in the various traditions about Jesus. Enjoyable to read ” (America Magazine)“Our secular culture continues to be profoundly impacted by biblical influences - including fundamentalist biblical influences - and this controversial book raises some important questions.” (State of Belief Radio)“Why buy this book if you’ve already got lots of volumes about Jesus? This book is something new. You’ll discover people in this book that you would never encounter in other religious books. There’s nothing like this 300-page exploration of our earliest human memories of Jesus.” (Read The Spirit)“Ehrman is one of the foremost voices in the historical Jesus debates. From the Back Cover

The bestselling author of Misquoting Jesus, one of the most renowned and controversial Bible scholars in the world today examines oral tradition and its role in shaping the stories about Jesus we encounter in the New Testament—and ultimately in our understanding of Christianity.Throughout much of human history, our most important stories were passed down orally—including the stories about Jesus before they became written down in the Gospels. In this fascinating and deeply researched work, leading Bible scholar Bart D. Erhman investigates the role oral history has played in the New Testament—how the telling of these stories not only spread Jesus’ message but helped shape it.A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman draws on a range of disciplines, including psychology and anthropology, to examine the role of memory in the creation of the Gospels. Explaining how oral tradition evolves based on the latest scientific research, he demonstrates how the act of telling and retelling impacts the story, the storyteller, and the listener—crucial insights that challenge our typical historical understanding of the silent period between when Jesus lived and died and when his stories began to be written down.As he did in his previous books on religious scholarship, debates on New Testament authorship, and the existence of Jesus of Nazareth, Ehrman combines his deep knowledge and meticulous scholarship in a compelling and eye-opening narrative that will change the way we read and think about these sacred texts.

"Jesus Before the Gospels" may not be Bart Ehrman's best book so far, but it is certainly his most original. In his earlier works, he explained contradictions between - and within - 27 books of the New Testament by careful analysis of the textual sources from antiquity. In "Jesus Before the Gospels" Ehrman steps outside the 200 year old academic discipline of source criticism in which he perfected, and interpret Christianity's based on insights and research from psychology, ethnology, social anthropology and cultural history.Ehrman explains why the gospels are far from modern biographies which should not be taken as face value:"the disciples of Jesus did not actually write the Gospels. The disciples were lower-class, illiterate peasants who spoke Aramaic, Jesus’s own language. The Gospels, on the other hand, were written by highly educated Greek-speaking Christians forty to sixty-five years later. The stories had been in circulation for decades, not simply among disciples who allegedly memorized Jesus’s words and deeds, but also among all sorts of people, most of whom had never laid eyes on an eyewitness or even on anyone else who had. And so, just as there is no evidence that Jesus’s followers memorized his teachings, the idea that everyone throughout Christendom telling stories about Jesus had memorized them is beyond belief"But how can our modern knowledge on how stories change when they are retold for decades?"We know in fact that they were changed, because we can compare different accounts of the same words or activities of Jesus and find discrepancies. Yet other accounts are historically implausible, and so appear to have been created in the years of transmission as people recounted what they had heard about the life of their Savior." Ehrman cites many interesting interdisciplinary examples as well as classic studies from a broad range of fields in support for his view. Ehrman also tries to explain how social groups remember, as opposed to how individuals remember stories:"From that point on, as more members of a group recount this distorted memory, the other members of the group—even if they either distinctly think that the memory is wrong or don’t remember it — feel considerable social pressure to agree with everyone else."The early Christians "... told stories that remembered Jesus’s past in light of the community’s present. These may have been “distorted” memories in the sense that—for the form critics—they involved words and deeds that did not actually go back to the historical Jesus. But they were valuable memories nonetheless, and no less real to the people who held and shared them than recollections that actually were rooted in the life of the historical Jesus"When writing about a subject like New Testamant history, repetitions are unavoidable. If you have read Ehrman's earlier works, you will recognize more than half of the repeated from earlier works. (This is the reason I give it 4 not 5 stars). There may be decades between each time new and important written source may be discovered. Finding support from social science for writing about history gives new perspectives. Other fields of history has gained significantly from methods from social history, ever since historians of the "annales-school" started this movement of memory history more than fifty years ago.Of Ehrman's books my favouries are "How Jesus became god" and "The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings". The newest book "How Jesus Became God: The Exaltation of a Jewish Preacher from Galilee" is great, but not as excellent as these.

I am a veteran Presbyterian minister who was trained in liberal theology at the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary many decades ago. Since then I have read thousands of books on the Bible and theology. Among the most intriguing of those books are the tomes of Dr. Bart D. Ehrman. He attended Wheaton College. He later studied at Princeton Seminary and took advanced degrees. He is fluent in koine Greek in which the New Testament was written and has published several books on the Bible, its manuscript and how Jesus the Nazarene carpenter was deemed to be God at the Council of Nicea in 325. This new book takes a new twist as the author examines how people remember events and life experiences. He shows how distorted memories of Jesus became part of the Christian tradition and were included in the four gospel accounts in the New Testament. Ehrman is a brilliant scholar and his insights on the role of memories of Jesus in the early church are fascinating. I especially enjoyed his discussion of Apostolic fathers such as Tertullian, Papias and how they remembered Jesus. His discussions of the death and resurrection of Jesus are riveting. He writes in an understandable style and conveys information based on the latest in scholarship. Whether you agree with his views or not anyone seriously interested in intelligent historical examination of the biblical record will fine gold to mine in this scholar's fertile book!

Bart Ehrman is my favorite Biblical Scholar writer, and I've rated everything I've read from him at 5 stars. IMHO, Ehrman is the top, go - to guy in this area of historical Biblical writing. This book is the first one I've read on the subject of how Jesus was remembered, which is basically all we know about Jesus. How different people in different places at different times in different languages with different circumstances, etc. changed and shaped what what eventually was written is thoroughly explored. There is much emphasis about how memory is recalled, or rather constructed and how it can be miss - remembered or changed during the oral tradition over several generations. These differences and contradictions in all existing Gospels can be better understood. I found this book probably a bit more interesting to me personally for my understanding how the Bible Gospels were chosen and interpreted in different ways throughout history.

Ehrman is always interesting, well-researched, and thought provoking. This book examines the process of memory and how it likely affected the gospels. Namely that memory is seldom historically accurate and is subject to interpretation under the current conditions. It is a non-fiction work filled with references, and is meant to both teach and persuade. As with all such books, it can sometimes be repetitive. Nonetheless, this both well written and thought provoking. I recommend it.

(This was originally posted on GoodReads. I have edited the review slightly to better suit Amazon reviewing).I've read Harper Fox before, but only her contemporary romance, "Scrap Metal," and that was a while ago. I enjoyed it, though, and was eager to see how she was at writing fantasy. I was not at all disappointed, and I'm eager to continue with this series! This is a short, concise, elegant little mystery leaning more towards Gothic horror than the paranormal romance I expected. Fox's writing is so lush and cozy, rife with beautiful, chilly, austere descriptions of the English moors. I'm actually a little bummed I couldn't have read it in October, because it is the ideal Halloween mystery--you can easily read the entire thing in one afternoon in your favorite chair with a cup of coffee.Fox's writing is undeniably romantic, but she's also one of the most refreshing, least flowery romance writers of today. For example, Gideon, our main detective character, is not simply horny and hard, he has had "a lonely, untouched year of it." Like, what a perfect way to say a man needs to get laid. I love it.This mystery is atmospheric and moody without being melancholy. There's no skimping on the details, especially for a short book--you feel like you're right in the cold, the grass, the dark. It made everything about the plot heightened. I'm glad Gideon and Lee got together quickly in the narrative, because I'm eager to see them work as a team again. Gideon's sharp, analytical mind paired with Lee's visual psychic abilities make for an excellent crime-solving duo. There was nothing special about the mystery itself. The motive was pretty weak and there was a pretty obvious giveaway line towards the beginning of the story that pointed blinding lights at the culprit. But I'd love to read about these two characters again in this small town, showing us more of the Moor and all the minor characters.

Gideon Frayne is a good village cop who hides his sexuality from the town folk. He's already lost a lover and now he has a case of a missing child. to deal with. His super suggests a psychic who has helped the police in the past, and has been successful. Although Gideon isn't thrilled with the idea, he is getting desperate as time passes and the child remains lost. When Lee Tyack shows up with his green eyes and hint of the clairvoyant it might be just what Gideon needs to help his case and his heart. The two men feel an instant attraction and work together to find the missing child. I kept thinking of Sherlock Holmes and 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' as I read. The story is heavy on atmosphere -- the village is named Dark which is on the Bodmin Moor with its history of strange goings on, there are tales of a monster on the moor as well, and oh, yes fog! Fox knows how to tell a spooky tale and her characters are attractive and seductive. Although this is a short story, it is Book 1 of Tyack and Frayne mysteries, and lays the groundwork for their future adventures. Fox writes well and her descriptions of M/M romance will keep the reader involved in the lives of the two men.

I'll skip the story summary, since you can read it as part of the book description above, but basically this is a Male/Male crime and romance story. This book is short but features a concise mystery (missing child, possible murder) that's balanced with very descriptive and visually simulating descriptions. At times, the language can get a bit dense and difficult to parse, especially when the author uses language specific to the region. The m/m romance is fast and intense, so those seeking more of a slow burn may be disappointed, but the characters definitely develop a real appreciation and respect for each other. The author reserves the slow burn for the mystery that works it's way through a maze of clues and misdirections. When the right pieces are in place, the mystery concludes with a sudden and intense climax.I only rated this 3 stars in part because it rushed through some points a bit too quickly and things wrapped up a bit too neatly. I'll likely read the next book to see if the lead characters get fleshed out a bit more. Oh, and I wanna know what happens with the dog ;)

I really don't understand the one star review. This is a beautiful cookbook full of recipes I can't wait to make. I love the Hearthstone references, the photography is gorgeous and the recipes look wonderful. What's not to like? Sure there are a few recipes that don't appeal to me but that's no different than any other cookbook. I have the World of Warcraft Cookbook by the same author and everything in it has been delicious so I trust that these will be as well. They certainly look like they will be. I'd recommend this to anyone, even if they aren't Hearthstone fans.

Nice, but after getting the World of Warcraft cook book, this one seemed to fall a little short. A good one to add the the collection, but if you only buy one, get the World of Warcraft one over this one. This one is mostly drinks and small bites, which goes nicely with the Tavern theme.

Bought this book for my son, who is 16 years old. It turned out to be a great buy! Will use this book for Thanksgiving dinner and had wonderful side dishes and unique tavern style food. It was great having this cooking/bonding moment with my son, but I have to admit the food was very good too! Highly recommend

It's a great book if you like to play the game and like to cook. It gives a whole new experience to the game once you try some of Harth's specials :) the book itself is well written, and easy to follow. Can't wait to sip some hot blackrock magma with hearthstone log

The drink ideas are good, but the food recipes could definitely use more work. As a whole, the food recipes do not feel particularly inventive and are mostly very small popular party bite-sized snacks. Handy, but not really what I was hoping for in the cookbook.

Nice addition to our video game cook book library. The book itself looks like it belongs on the shelf of your favorite mmorpg! If you are a fan of the game, Blizzard Entertainment, or just a fan of yummy food in general, please don't hesitate to add this to your collection!

Awesome bar/tavern style food and drink recipes. Easy to follow instruction. Also the one star review is to be taken with a grain of salt.

The recipes are pretty much food you'd find in a tavern, which fits with the Hearthstone theme. I have been a fan of WoW for years so this was really cool.

This book has literally changed my perspective. I knew that Sanger was considered a eugenist, however I did not know how she was exactly connected. This book gives a logical, historical and analytical objective prospective that basically blew my mind.

This is a book that thoroughly supports its thesis, even to the point of being dry in some places. But that is necessary to support her arguments. To cover the bases of what she is claiming it requires evidence that she researched the material. She has. Margaret Sanger had a real and dark agenda and Franks is methodical about exposing it.

Comprehensive, well researched.

I thought it was a factually written work of history. Having my degree in historical studies, I thought that she did a wonderful job delving into the facts, and citing the appropriate references for her arguments. I would encourage readers to read this book, and not to shy away from a work for fear of what facts it might bring forth. It is most definitely a historical, not political work.

Good book about Sanger, planned parenthood and eugenics.

This book connects some dots in history that our public education and college educations don't want connected namely Margaret Sanger's hand in helping to motivate the most sinister scientific idealogy in history EUGENICS! It examines Planned Parenthood's many leaders who were also eugenicists. Keep in mind that eugenics was anathema to woman's rights to reproduce being that at it's apex it led to the administration of mandatory sterilization of thousands of womenfrom disadvantaged backgrounds. This book led me to gems like this article featured in the NY Times in 1950 of Margaret Sanger calling for the government to forcebly sterilize women [...]The book's references are all listed in the extensive bibliography and all the author's research was done in the library of congress so most of the book is based on the key player's own quotes. She even gets into how eugenics is connected to the genetic engineering movement. The book is written in a very eloquent manner but is not difficult to read or bogged down with overly academic terminology also the author doesn't tow the line that most authors do when criticising the birth control movement and evagelizing through the entire book with religious passages.

The truth hurts sometimes. Sanger, a Socialist and Eugenicist, WAS concerned for women's health - dying from giving birth to one child after another, bleeding to death after "trying for a boy" to carry on the family name, nurture the husband's ego, and having virtually no means of birth control. Yes, she WAS very concerned about women's perils of having children too young, and continuing to do so well into their 40s. But, sadly, Sanger only cared about only the WHITE women's health. Her time spent in China convinced her of the excessive births of the "savage races", babies born only to starve to death. Girls were considered a burden, so infanticide was rampant. If they survived birth, parents sold daughters to brothels to survive. Some even kept reproducing to sell daughters to brothels for extra money; boys were kept to help their fathers and support elderly parents - unless they were disabled and deemed a burden on the family. Years later came Mao's One Child Policy.Until then, Margaret had decided that she would play God, urging poor Chinese women to let her abort their pregnancies. Good old Margaret was there to help.Once back America, she noticed how many more Negroes were being born. In the black communities, she did her charity work, convincing black mothers that it was best to abort their babies and erase the burden of another mouth to feed. All white society KNEW that black men were hungry sexual predators obsessed with sex! Negroes were just having too many children.Margaret spent time with other Eugenicists, helping them spread the word with speeches and meetings. Eugenicists traveled everywhere to find the retarded and learning disabled, the club-footed, the facially deformed, and cleft palated children, seeking out their parents to urge the wives and daughters to be sterilized, thus ending the inferior bloodlines. It was for the best, after all. No one asked "The best for whom?" These "experts" were "educated people" who knew what they were talking about.Eventually, Nelson Rockefeller heard her speak on Eugenics. A eugenics enthusiast himself, he wrote President Woodrow Wilson (known as our "most educated president in history", and a Nobel recipient) and told him about Margaret. He felt if these two minds could be united, a lot of problems could be solved.Rockefeller was in the process of developing a public education system for the U.S. New inventions meant new factories for menial and hard labor in the burgeoning New World of industry, with assembly-line jobs to fill requiring little skill. Training lower-class children to fill those jobs ,growing by leaps and bounds, was an urgent priority. At the same time, a growing number of Negroes competed for those jobs against good white men. Something must be done, and Rockefeller believed Margaret might have a solution.Margaret and Woodrow met and hit it off immediately. Woodrow Wilson, a staunch racist, had revived the Jim Crow laws once he was sworn in office; he segregated federal government workers and fired most black workers in Washington - even the White House cook who had worked there for years. One of his friends was the Grand Dragon of the KKK. Although not a member, Wilson hated Negroes. And feared them. He especially feared their growing population. If they became too numerous, they might even "take over". They generally voted Republican, as Lincoln was Republican. Their population might increase enough to enable them to help elect a Republican President. That must never happen.Woodrow and Margaret devised a plan: while Woodrow made laws to keep Negroes "in their place", Margaret would abort Negro babies - with Woodrow's financial help. Meanwhile, his friend, the Grand Dragon of the KKK would terrorize the Negro population, instigate lynchings, killings, hangings, and incarcerations of Negro men along with the burning of Negro schools and churches, while Woodrow looked the other way and played dumb. They called their plan "The Negro Project" and Woodrow publicly talked of educational programs for the black children (sub-standard to the white children, of course, so they could never qualify for the nicer factory jobs for which the lower and middle class white men were vying for. And it worked! It worked for a long time, in fact.Ironically, the Eugenicists were mostly comprised of wealthy families - the politicians, moguls, business owners, doctors, and lawyers. Their children got the best educations in the private schools and boarding schools. And, naturally, they were better educated, because their schools had the best teachers and the better supplies and books. Even the smart lower class students, having poorer educations, were overwhelmed when testing for entry into high schools; college was out of the question. And Margaret, the hero of women, continued to keep the black population down. Soon, there was a Planned Parenthood in every town's slum and poor section (never in the wealthier areas of town. This author didn't paint Margaret Sanger to be evil; Margaret WAS evil. Her legacy just hasn't caught up with her. Links to infertility and breast cancer to abortion are buried, kept secret from the public. Meanwhile, millions of women today who had abortions are in counselling to deal with their grief and anger at being lied to.Margaret Sanger may well have been a product of her time as a racist, but she devised an evil that has not only hurt American minorities, but has hurt women and killed millions of innocents in every 3rd world country today.Today, America offers health care, vaccines, medicine, medical training, and medical equipment to these poor countries - provided they legalize abortion, reducing the black and brown populations around the world, all in the name of "reducing world population". And in ignorance, these countries legalize abortion in exchange for their 39 pieces of silver.Killing unborn babies is a trillion dollar business disguised as women's healthcare. "My body, my choice," they claim; yet those babies never got a choice at all. And women are being lied to and refuse to see the Truth.I highly recommend this book. Perhaps one day, if enough people look back to see exactly what a demon Sanger released on this earth, this holocaust would cease and people would finally cease to regard Sanger as "a hero for women". She is not. This author is to be commended. Bravo.

Margaret Sanger is an amazing woman! Her work for women's reproductive rights is amazing! All women need to be aware of the efforts Margaret Sanger made that have had an impact on their individual daily lives today.

Wow! You will definetely get a lesson on history! Will help you visualize her book when you read her story.

An excellent book for young readers. Includes a great overview of WW2 in Poland and the plight of Polish Jewish children. Contains many lesser known stories and photographs and paints a moving and inspiring portrait of Irena Sendler -- the young Polish social worker who became a role model of moral courage for future generations. Have recommended it again and again..

Well written account of this wonderful lady's life. Fast delivery.

Daysha, a 4th grade student says, "I found Irena to be very inspiring. I want to be just like her!"

Really good book on Irena Sendler and I enjoyed the photos too.

Very well done.

I couldn't put the book down as it is so interesting and captivating. I had asked at the library for a copy to read however there were many requesting the same book and that was several weeks ago so I decided to purchase this one from you. Thanks so much.

When I bought this book, I didn't realize that it is part of Crabtree Groundbreaker Biographies, which I guess is a series of books based on very inspirational people. While it is a good book, much of it is outlining different parts of the Holocaust, much of what I already know. I did, however, learn about Irena Sendler, who, with helpers, saved many Jewish children. I also learned more about Zegota, the council formed in 1942 to aid Jews. A good book describing the main parts of the Holocaust, good for older children or young adults.

Review

“Since I can't imagine the library of a map aficionado, historian, armchair warrior or institution functioning without Revolution, I'd say this is THE book on Revolutionary War era maps. Period.” - Erik Golstein, The Portolan Journal“For both casual readers and experienced researchers, Revolution: Mapping the Road to American Independence is as fine a compilation of cartographic material as any available today.” - Don N. Hagist, Journal of the American Revolution“Oversized, ideal for the coffee table and a curious mind, this glorious book has immense appeal.” - Douglas Lord, Library Journal“The excellent supporting artwork and Brown and Cohen’s elegant text help place these works in perspective in terms of both the development of the war from Fort Duquesne to Yorktown and the rise of modern mapmaking through the persons of unwitting heroes like Col. John Montresor, ‘the most able British soldier who served during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution’…Essential for students of the Revolutionary era and a pleasure for cartography buffs.” - Kirkus Reviews“Revolution is a dazzling achievement that casts new light on the imperial wars of the late eighteenth century. These maps―many of them rare manuscripts, reproduced here for the first time―remind us that the battle for (and against) American independence unfolded in space as well as in time. Here the long road to revolution becomes visible as a hard-fought contest over territory as well as clash of ideals. A feast for the eye, Revolution also invites fresh thinking about the founding of the United States and Britain’s American War.” - Jane Kamensky, Professor of History, Harvard University, and Carly and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation Director of the Schlesinger Library for the History of Women in America“This glorious collection―ravishingly beautiful, exquisitely curated, brilliantly annotated―is one of the most graphic and illuminating treatments of the American Revolution ever brought to press. Here is the road to revolution and the war itself, from the opening of the French and Indian War in 1755 to the surrender at Yorktown in 1781 and the Treaty of Paris two years later. Combining the virtues of an historical atlas, a luscious exhibition, and a detailed but concise history of the wars, it is a GPS to the American Revolution.” - Ric Burns, documentary filmmaker, Steeplechase Films“This beautiful book, with its superbly reproduced images, brings to life the decades leading to the birth of the U.S.A. The authors have given a highly skilled analysis of the background, contents and significance of the images. The readable style and brilliant use of little-known cartographical works has created a book that anyone with an interest in the interplay between maps and history should buy―and read.” - Peter Barber, head of Map Collections, the British Library

This collection of antique maps and concise commentary is visually stunning and beautifully written. At a time when many readers require reasons to purchase a book in hardcover rather than in digital form, this volume offers many. First of all, it is a very elegant work. Laura Lindgren, the jacket designer, uses an 18th C. full-color military map of New York City for the cover, the spaces for modern text provided by an artful fading of the map. The names of the authors are in the upper right, and the title is boldly printed across the center. The dust jacket is heavy polished paper. A ribbon of map (this time of the Fort George Area) tops the back cover above three reviews on burgundy background. One of these endorsements is by Ric Burns, the documentarian. The book is oversize in format, 12X13 inches, but is slender at 150 pages, more than enough space to cover thirty years of revolutionary history starting with the French and Indian War. The maps included have been rarely or never published before.Unlike many recent historical atlases, the focus in this volume is always on the maps. While the authors include many illustrations, they are always closely related to the maps. For example, the Anti-Gallican Map of North America (1755), published by a British anti-French club, is accompanied by an illustration of the badge of the President of the organization. It is a gorgeous rococo jewel which depicts St. George impaling the French flag with his spear. The map and badge clearly illustrate the British hostility to the French just before the onset of war.One of the reviewers on the cover, Jane Kamensky, notes that "the battle for (and against) American independence unfolded in space as well as in time." This idea provides the key rationale for presenting history in the context of contemporary maps. For example, the section on Braddock's March notes that General Braddock planned to sail up the Potomac, and then travel from Fort Cumberland (Modern Cumberland, MD) to Fort Duquesne (modern Pittsburgh). Maps indicated that the Potomac voyage would be 15 miles and the trip by land would be 30 miles. The Potomac is not navigable above the Great Falls just above the present site of Washington, D.C. The distance to Cumberland by land is about 140 miles with another 100 miles over mountainous terrain to get to Fort Duquenes. Braddock was soon complaining about the unexpected distance and harsh landscape. This cartographic distortion of space had significant effect on the course of history, and contributed to the British defeat, the death of General Braddock, and the near death of George Washington. The authors, Richard Brown and Paul Cohen are collectors and dealers in antique maps and are not historians. However, the text is correct, and the maps they've found and published here are expertly chosen to illustrate the history. While there are many who could effectively condense the history of Revolutionary America, the authors used their expertise to scour disparate archives and collections, and to winnow down their choices to the maps that perfectly illustrate the key historical events covered in this volume. This book will go on my coffee table, not only because it is beautiful but also because I am certain I will want to frequently revisit these maps.

The text and map illustrations that are included are excellent. The authors focus far too little attention on the Southern colonies where the battle for independence was finally won. Indeed, one of the most critically important battles of the entire war was at Guilford Court House in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. That battle is not mentioned; in fact, Guilford is not even in the index. Without the manuscript and/or printed maps of that battle (which are readily accessible in the Library of Congress), the authors seem to have gotten lost on their "road to American independence."

Outstanding book. Excellent, engaging text well summarizing the events & highly detailed original maps that lend a sense of antiquity & accuracy to the subject. My only small criticism would be the font on some of the text in the maps is so small its hard to read but having necessarily been reduced in size to fit a book it is unavoidable. Worth every penny!

I bought this book for my husband, who avidly reads books about American history. He really likes Revolution because it provides the visuals, maps and pictures, for the texts he is reading. It serves as a companion reader for all the historical biographies in his collection.

I'm a sucker for maps and history so this combo was right up my alley - I was not dissapointed

ok but brief

Maps are not great, and have no references from the texts. Difficult to follow.

What a great book. Bought it for my daughter who is a mapmaker.
