About Our Authors Laurie Ann Callihan received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from San Diego Christian College in El Cajon, California. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Science Education as a University Fellow at Florida State University. She has extensive writing, speaking, and teaching experience. Her authorship includes The Best Test Preparation for the CLEP Biology Exam and other REA titles and journal articles currently in press. She is an internationally known speaker on education, having been the keynote speaker at state and local education conventions throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. In addition to years of study, curriculum development, and teaching Biology and Physical Science, her current research focuses on development of effective teaching methods and tools for conceptual understanding. David Callihan earned a Bachelor of Science in Geophysics from San Diego Christian College in El Cajon, California. He currently teaches physical science and mathematics at Bishop Hall Charter School in Thomasville (Thomas County), Georgia. He began his teaching career at DeSoto Middle School in Arcadia, Florida, where he was recognized as the top performing teacher based on AYP results. Prior to becoming a teacher, Mr. Callihan had a successful career in manufacturing, oil exploration, and high technology sales. Mr. Callihan is a Zero-G teacher coach, and has worked with the Florida Space Grant Consortium, the Center for Oceanic Studies in Educational Excellence, and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. He is currently working on his Master’s in Science Education at Florida State University.

Good quality book and CD for loading test prep materials. I studied really, really hard. I took the test and about 75 percent of the test given was not on material covered in this book. I am pretty sure there are warnings within the book regarding that possibility. I did not pass my test. I felt so smart after I studied the materials in this book and took the practice test, and studied some more. Then when I took the test the computer selected for me, there was so much material in the questions that were not covered in my book - I felt dumb. This is a huge subject, Natural Science - and it would be a challenge for any company to guarantee positive results to any student who tried to CLEP in these categories. Take the class, I did and came away with an 'A'.
This book is an excellent choice for those with a science background, but it isn't for a novice or beginner. Our son has always been interested in science and learned a great deal on his own in the areas of physics and chemistry (thank you Mythbusters and Discovery). I'm a language arts major....this book wouldn't have been enough for me. If you have the depth of understanding in the sciences that would be similar to an intro college course (101 and higher), this book is for you. If you slid through the typical high school course (e.g.intro chemistry and physics and biology), but didn't take an AP course, I don't think this or any CLEP prep books would give you enough information. For our son and those with similar interests, it is perfect. Check it out from your library before you buy it. CD-ROM practice coming with it and text exams are great. A nearby college accepts this exam and you earn 8 credits at a very low cost plus less work and class time!Thank you REA. You're the best.Karen T.C.
I definitely recommend this book for this exam. I was really worried because there was so much information to absorb. I studied for about a month and passed with a 71.For those not familiar with the ACE requirements, generally colleges only require a score of 50 for full credit. The CLEP scale is from 20-80. [...]Double check with the college that you're planning on applying CLEP credit for! Different institutions have different policies regarding CLEP/DANTES credits. You don't want to waste time/money on a test they might not accept. You also want to go ahead and have the school code ready. Requesting the scores to be sent to the institution later costs $30 per request.That being said, I'm shopping right now for more books in this series to knock-out more of my General Education and General Elective Requirements. :)
I studied this guide for 2 months (3-4 hours a week) and 2 weeks of intensive study. I took every one of the practice exams and scored grades between 55 and 70. However, when I took the actual exam, half of the material I studied was not on the exam and the other half was never mentioned in the book. I had to guess for at least 30 of the 120 questions and failed. This may be good for someone who has a strong science back-ground and just needs the accreditation. However, if you are like me and have not taken a science course in 15 years, you're better off taking the course or using supplemental study guides.
This book has alot of information regarding Natural Sciences, however; this is a very broad, deep topic so this book can't possibly cover everything you may encounter on the CLEP test. I did study this book in preparation for the Natural Sciences CLEP and I would estimate that this book helped me to answer about 50% of the questions on the CLEP. Not that bad! The other half was not reviewed in this book and I read this book cover to cover so I should know! I did pass with a score of 55 (50 needed to pass) so I was pleased with this book for the most part. However, for future CLEP Natural Sciences test takers be sure to reference other materials as well. You will need all the study time you can get to pass this test. The hardest test I have ever taken but it is passable...if you study!
Great book. I passed 5 CLEP exams thanks to REA books. Love love love the cd. The score you get are very similar to what you will get on the real exam. The material for the actual exam is far too extensive for any one book to cover. But I passed using just this one book and I am not a science student...
Here's my bottom line recommendation: Buy this book for its practice tests, but find something more user friendly for content. This book has exam questions that are very similar to those on the actual CLEP. In my mind that makes the book a worthwhile purchase, especially with the testware's instant scoring feature.Unfortunately, the written explanations are lacking, and even frustrating. Technical terms are used before they're explained. Mistakes appear occasionally. The most maddening issue is the highly frequent appearance of concepts in the test questions that are nowhere explained in the body of the text. I would suggest getting a "For Dummies" book as a supplement.
I passed the CLEP exam with no trouble after reading this book. I went through it twice, and some of the chapters I spent extra time studying. I would recommend researching cell structure independent of this book using google though, as there are some amazing videos and study guides available online to supplement what's in this book.I'm actually keeping this one in my library since I really enjoyed the fisher-price cliff-notes descriptions of the subject matter.
