The DefectorBy Daniel SilvaDisclaimer: This reviewer is a Silva fan for 2 decades. I have just finished a re-reading of the this book as part of a re-read of the Gabriel Allon Series from the beginning. For me, I now have a better and deeper understanding of the value one can get from reading a Silva book.It isn't the same the second time around. I feel differently about the story and the hero. I can not tell anyone how to write about a man in umpteen books and keep it not only enjoyable, interesting and a better use of one's time than anything the internet can provide, without wondering how does one write about the same man, doing essentially the same thing with essentially the same people in a completely unforgiving world and in an environment where treachery must always be assumed and, hopefully, avoided. This book is an example of how to overcome the insinuated barriers to superb writing. The answer is that Silva is extraordinarily passionate about his views of right and wrong, fair and not, and the varying nature of truth as it never just has one master to serve. Silva takes the news of the past and finds repetitions of that past news in today's headlines and tries to warn us all that we are doomed if we repeat the mistakes of our past. Perhaps not a new theme but a valuable one nonetheless. This book and a few others in this series are keen to remind us that we have no ally in the Kremlin, whoever 'we' are. Brutality and treachery, all to maintain the great divide between the haves and have nots in a country rich with everything the world needs or wants but cannot learn how to share for a fair return for all. The robber barons of the last century are still alive in Russia. The Soviet Union died because the robbers tired of supporting the outer republics so they abandoned them to a sort of gangster democracy. But to do that, the robbers needed to get to know everyone else's secrets and plans because competing fairly is not in their DNA.Ultimately, their egregious behavior ran afoul of our hero's sensitivities. The headline is the main message to this review. Silva's Allon is the hero. He is selfless but confident, and he loves his wives but just a hair less than his country and nothing is more important than his word. Silva admires his hero, though his hero's faults sometimes make us uncomfortable. But the essence of this hero is that he lives his life putting his views of right, wrong, love, and honor all ahead of his personal well-being or wealth or popularity. Can any of us say that we live the same way? Of course not. That is how Silva can keep us enthralled time after time.Read this book; for the first time or the second.Al Dell

The Defector, book 9 in the Gabriel Allon series, is really a direct continuation of book 8. If you are a series' follower, or new to the series, do yourself a favor and read books 8 then 9, even if you aren't already enjoying them in order. While many of his other books can stand alone, this one would be far too much of a teaser of books 1-8, and a disconnect without 8, to deny yourself the guilty pleasure of committing to at least the two book read. For those who have become Silva fans during books 1-8, this is a particularly intimate look at the fictitious team you've come to love and admire.

I admit that among the writers I read, Daniel Silva stands within an elite group. I'm not going to name names. That's not important. All that is, is once picked up, a Silva book becomes an addictive to read further into this most gifted writer."The Defector" is a very clever read. It is up there with LeCarre in story telling. I find that once started, I cannot put Silva's books down. That comment after having read five or so of his books. He is prolific and Gabriel Allon is his star as Tracy Crosswhite is Dugoni's, or Harry Bosch is Michael Connelly's. I could to on, but you get the idea. They are those characters that stand out in any read that leads us to want more from the writers.I'll be reading this writer, as with some others, not mentioned, for a while

The first half of this book has two essential purposes: recap the history of Gabriel Allon’s experience with Russian villain Ivan Kharkov and then set the stage for his eventual capture. Author Daniel Silva freely recalls the history of Kharkov from his earlier novel Moscow Rules. More than once I had the distinct impression that I’d read this material before. There is some new material, however, such as a description of how Gabriel had met, romanced and married his current wife, Chiara. Thankfully the second half is much more interesting and a pleasure to read. The quest to bring Kharkov to justice is ramped up once again and the story is more relevant. Chiara is now part of the Israeli team. They work hard and suffer immensely to accomplish their mission. Kharkov’s wife Elena and his two children are still free of Ivan’s tentacles but are useful as bait to get him out of hiding and in a position to be captured. But probably the worst of Ivan’s fears comes true as he reads a message from his children, something that a father never wants to hear. Overall I thought this sequel was much less effective than Moscow Rules. Perhaps Silva should have heeded the first of those Moscow rules: Never look back.

Daniel Silva is one of my favorite authors, and I just love his character, Gabriel Allon. The Defector shows how Silva has grown as an writer. This book shows more development of characters and a completely different direction for Gabriel. This is not exactly like his previous books, but it is similar. I love the twists and turns throughout the story. I won't give a summary, as other reviewers have done that. I'll just say this was one of Silva's best.

Even though Daniel Silva claims that this book is mostly a figment of his imagination, one can imagine that so much of what he portrays would be possible in Russia today. I fear I will be sad when I finish the last Gabriel Allon book!

I am hardly impartial. I love Silva's books and have read every one. He writes very well and I always learn something from each book. This may not be his best, but it is worth reading and he ties up all loose ends beautifully. I am a Gabriel Allon fan and I think he is my favorite literary hero in the mystery/intrigue genre. If you have never read an Allon novel, start with an earlier one. The characters become like family and I would prefer you meet them sooner than in this book.

Yet another triumph for Daniel Silva in the Gabriel Allon Series. Heart pounding thriller ride in pursuit of the villains. Characters that feel like family. The premise that good triumphs over evil.
